Ice sucks! Gotta be all locked up for sure but still sometimes get 1 wheel drive. That's why I've always got v bar chains in the truck, even if I haven't used them in years! A few years back I never woulda made it out of an ice storm in the mountains without my chains.
@NorthBoundExpeditionsКүн бұрын
Chains would definitely be critical to take on icy trails. I knew we weren’t gonna go far on this as the point of this outing wasn’t to do a trail but rather find a nice spot along the river to take some photos and have a little fire. But I do 100% agree that chains would be a great piece of kit to keep in the vehicle in winter.

Just a quick check, As you have used it for more than a year, please tell me if it's a spot beam pattern or a spread one. As I am nowhere able to find this information on the Internet,
@NorthBoundExpeditions22 күн бұрын
It’s a bit of both. The glass doesn’t diffuse as a traditional flood light would, but with the sheer number of individual LEDs, especially with 2 lights aimed correctly, you get quite a large visible area. But each LED is technically a spot light. So you get a bit of both, the reach of a spot a smaller, yet substantial spread, depending on your aim of the lights. Personally I have them both converge on a point at approx 50-60m in front of me, so they really brighten up the road in front of me.

I live up in the woods and Nacamiento Road is narrower in some places than my driveway. Yes, it's a county/federal road. Not a road for a 30' motorhome. Not a road for a Sprinter van. Not a road for a fifth wheel trailer.

I just did a three day, midweek solo trip. 12/9 through 12/11. Good weather and I was able to reserve a great campsite offseason. A local road here just reopened that has been closed since 2021. Paved, but narrow/steep/windy. I just wanted to drive it and see the condition after it reopened but with the good weather and the campsite it turned into a really fun trip. It got stormy/rainy on my trip home. Lot's of little rockslides down onto a very narrow roadway.

This road goes over the steepest watershed in the continental USA. Cone Peak. 5100 feet to sea level in less than 3 miles. The road summit is 3800 feet. The road switchbacks up and down for 22 miles. The drop from Cone Peak to sea level is 33%.

Quite the adventure! I've done a bunch of solo canoe trips, and also trail based bikepacking solo. Just turning 73, so not so much now! I think I would be more stressed doing it yor way, I would be worried about the vehicle letting me down. You seem capable of fixing a lot yourself, so that helps! Never seen those heat pac meals before, probably military?
@NorthBoundExpeditions2 ай бұрын
That’s awesome, sounds like you’ve had quite the adventures. Yes, adding a vehicle to solo travel definitely adds an element of concern in terms of breakdowns, however, I travel with quite a bit of tools and also some spare parts and have been able to manage quite a few trailer repairs in my days. We do use the same heating packs in the military however, these are commercial off the shelf products from a Canadian company. They are almost identical to the kits we use in the military. They are called total prepared.ca.

I take my JKU (also on 37s) off road and camping too, but with literally about 1/5th the gear. I sleep in the back of it, and my rearview mirror actually serves a purpose. Clearly it works for you, but I can't even imagine bringing that much stuff with me. 😯. I go camping to *experience* nature, not to avoid it.
