Trailmater Offroad Recovery

Trailmater Offroad Recovery

Күн бұрын

After breaking a spindle on the recovery trailer we decided to repair and upgrade it. We stepped up to a larger spindle and went to 6 lug hubs. We installed the potential for electric brakes, but we may never hook them up. Still undecided on that. Then of course right after we got it fixed we had to go rescue a giant SxS from Porcupine Rim Trail. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Gotta' say as hard as all these vehicles and the trailer get used in that rough country it is a wonder they do not break more often. That's a testament to the ever evolving design and building ability of Rory, Shawn and Mike. Heck of a team!

Casey would have just used his Zaklift to yeet that trailer up, or he might have flipped it over like he does with his old school bus. Heck now he might even have his wife do it. Oh, we all know that the trailer will never get brakes installed- it always has very capable rigs towing it at fairy low speeds. All brakes will do is add weight and slow you down. (Bad pun intended)

The problem with these SxS is people think they can do rock crawler/pre runner stuff with them but they are oversized fourwheelers.
@injuhneer
@injuhneer Ай бұрын
It seems like the SxS "upgrades" aren't complete. Parts of the vehicles are "upgraded" and that in turn puts stress on other stock parts. In this case the tall wheels introduce forces to the steering that exceed the designed capacity. "SNAP" goes the pinion. Long control arms without uprated steering joints is another common failure. CV joints is another. Put larger truck tires on with beadlocks the wonder why OEM CV joints or axles fail. And so it goes.

If you're going to do off road recovery work you might as well build your fleet around sxs recovering, they are the weakest built at on the market. It always amazes me how puny all of the steering and suspension parts are. But everyone is happy to pay for the concept of what the manufacturers want them to be.

Rory watching you flip the trailer reminded me of a story I heard as a younger man. There was a big Swede who uprighted a locomotive out in the woods. In the old days when logging was done by steam donkeys. Some how the train fell of the track and the Big Swede started hooking the rigging up. Every cable that lifted or pulled the engine was called a Luff. The engine was a logging tool so it was smaller than average and narrow gage. The Big Swede in one swoop, lifted, pulled and placed the engine on the track. Word

For me the hardest part of doing this work in this country would be not taking the really long way back to the shop. I would be so tempted to put the truck in second gear, rest my foot against the transmission hump so that it would hold the throttle at about 2300 rpm, and just meander home.
