Trailmater Offroad Recovery

Күн бұрын

Lilli and I got a call for a jeep that had broken its steering knuckle up on Hells Revenge Trail in one of the Hot Tubs. We grabbed some parts and tools and headed out. It was a Saturday and Mike and Justin were out with friends and family doing a trail ride. They came across the broken jeep right before we got there. So they jumped in to help with the repairs and film. We got the jeep picked up and stabilized so we could do the repairs. Luckily it didn't break the knuckle it just pulled out the balljoints, so we pressed them back in and had it back together pretty quick. Then we pulled the jeep up and out. Since the abs sensor and the brake line had been damaged the lockers wouldn't work and he didn't have grwat brakes. So we hooked up to him and lowered him down the steep hills and pulled him up the other ones. We got them down to the trailhead and they brought a trailer back to haul it home. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Those new Jeep axles sure have issues. I have busted many front shafts when I ran the old D44 never popped ball joints out. I swapped to RCVs but now run tons on my rig. I have busted front driver shafts on my SD60 never lost a ball joint even when I drove that broken shaft the long way back from Pritchett Canyon. I left my puller for my drive slugs at home and I didn't know Rory existed back then or I would have called him to drag me out instead of driving a broken shaft. Oh well live and learn.

@bigerniemccracken1882
@bigerniemccracken1882 11 ай бұрын
You are both correct. Rory is qualified to say when to stay off but also the guy was actually just asking what he could upgrade to be able to actually do them so it was sort of short and gatekeeper-y on Rory’s part by saying just stay off of them because people don’t know until they know- and if no one had upgraded anything until they knew what they were attempting wasn’t possible without modifying things then there would be no aftermarket or modifications anywhere - but also for as experienced as Rory is, maybe he got the feeling from a handful of things like making a vehicle shake around while someone’s under it for instance that even with the pocket to upgrade it some people still may not make the best situations out of some obstacles out there regardless of a rig that’s capable or not - but that also comes back to a guy can’t know until he learns so it’s sort of a stalemate there where I understand why he probably seems to have came off short and gatekeeper-y by saying it that way but also sort of understood why he did. (He could have just followed up the guys question with something like - in this form or like it is currently stay off the big obstacles and X Y Z is what is done to most of the rigs you see around able to handle them so it was a learning opportunity for the guy asking what he needed and maybe would give some idea of everything that was changed, all the work that went into them, or was typically required other than factory)

Those guys wearing california shorts and muscle shirts got humbled really quick, not to mention their day both went from being fun to very expensive. Litebrite channel constantly says that hopping is when you break stuff and boy the clip did not disappoint. Hop hop... bam wham... next thing you know you got a ton of angry offroaders that can't do the obstacle they went across the country to get to... and then guy that shows up with a girl that wears hello kitty shoes yells at you for rocking the car... and Justin and Mike on their off day have to get their hands dirty and next thing you know an impossible fix happens. But that was not the end of the story... they had to be assisted and limping all the way back to the parking lot. I figure between trail fix and recovery and then cost of repairs at the front and the back of the truck... those hops could be measured in hop per thousands. Eeesh. Lesson learned for the guys.

I agree with the advice at 3:25 that staying off the big obstacles in stock form (esp with a truck full of gear and 4? people) will prevent that damage but I think the customer was asking for advice on upgrades. If that's the case RCVs/Chromos+Joints and maybe BJIs should significantly reduce the risk of breakage at the weakest links. Excellent video and a very impressive repair in a complex recovery :)

I know these guys have faith in their equipment, but sliding under a vehicle on a flat even surface is one thing. Laying under a vehicle that slid into a rock bowl hanging by a tow line while wrenching on it...that's something else. Kudos to these guys, that's incredible work!

Another great video of Rory and crew doing what they do so well . Several things alway stand out , Trailmater has been put together near perfect for the recoveries they do . I am super impressed with how Rory keeps the RPM down in most situations , relying on torque and gearing . I like how Mike was out trail riding and stepped right up to help . JR boss Lilly is awesome , not to mention just too cute . Keep the videos coming , they are always entertaining and often educational .
