In this video we tackle the famous Black Bear Pass near Telluride Colorado. But shortly after coming down past the sheer cliff and waterfall, things take a turn for the worse when a freak hail storm hits the mountain. What comes next is flash floods, mudslides, and landslides that eventually trap us from escaping. There were many hikers on the trail as well and 911 was called and search and rescue was sent out along with road crews to help recover missing and or hypothermic hikers and rock climbers who were in the area. A bulldozer was needed to reopen the road before we could get out. At least 1 rock climber who was said to have started the Via Ferrata climb just before the storm and was reported missing, his whereabouts are still unclear: denver.cbslocal.com/2020/07/2...

Good video. It should serve as a message to out-of-staters; summer hail and intense storms are EXTREMELY common in the mountains after noon. These aren't a freak occurrence, although this one seemed particularly severe and to hit an area with way too many people on it for the time of day. Glad you all made it safely, but hopefully it's a lesson learned on timing.

Probably older and wiser or I'm chicken.

I lived in Telluride back in the late 70’s and know this pass well. The only time I traveled up against the one way was to rescue a friend who thought his 4 wheel drive could make the climb. This is the point; traversing this pass without catastrophic consequences is a combination of the right vehicle, the proper experience and weather conditions. Leave one of these essentials out and only luck will get you down.

Lucky you guys had the ability to call for help. After graduation in 1992 me and my friend planned a two week backpacking trip into the back country in Mammoth Lakes. A hail and lightning storm moved in. We had a base camp in the forest and much more lightning. Lightning was striking trees and the ground all around us for hours. All we had was a tent to protect, we finally fell asleep with the lightning still striking. I think the only way we fell asleep was we tired ourselves out being so stressed for so long.

This is a great video, thanks for all the hard work editing it and making it watchable. I’ve been mountain off-roading in my 25 year old oil burner Land Cruiser 80 Series for many years now in all weathers and the thing that was most scary in this video was watching you steering with one hand (the dumb radio was in you’re other hand) thumb in the spokes, palming the rim, my goodness... breaking every rule of control. Please don’t do this anymore my friend. You got away with it this time, but next time you may not be so lucky. Trust me, I hate reading smart-ass comments criticizing cammers, but please, for the love of God, take this as a constructive comment. I’ve done the same and I’ve had my scary moments because of this, power steering can give you a false sense of control, but one rock in the wrong place can snatch that wheel to full lock in a millisecond if you don’t have 2 hands ready to grip and control that wheel. Best of luck with your wheelin’ adventures to come. I’m a little envious of your access to these mountains, even though I have loads of fun wheelin’ the Carpathian mountains in ROMANIA, where I live. Have fun, but please, please play safe. 👍🏻🇷🇴🇬🇧

Happy Anniversary! ... Mother nature at her finest! When they say, "when in the high country, weather can change in an instant." They weren't kidding. You see alot of footage of Black Bear Pass ... but this has to be the best to show what it can REALLY be like... especially your guy's reactions. Everyone seems to show it as a Sunday Drive .. but THIS is how most people would be like when they got there ... even on a nice day.

Yeah . He invented a way to capture electricity from the sky, and transmit it out 360 degrees. Build the tower once. Put the two 6 foot aluminum discs antenna on your house or biz once. Free electricity forever. Westinghouse lobbied congress to shut him down in the 20's, hired thugs to destroy his laboratory. He died alone , a pauper, in a one bedroom apartment. He was the one who invented radio. Marconi was a lab assistant who went and got the patent because Tesla was busy inventing other things. His backer, JP Morgan, was furious.. He invented most of the modern electronics we have today. When he died in '43 his inventions, not all of which were made public, were locked up in a safe by the govt. Remain classified to this day. We are 100 years behind the times due to corporate greed.

Matt, my wife & I enjoyed yalls video of Black Bear. We have been to the San Juan for 5 years straight and are headed back up for our 6th this Sept. We've done BB at least twice each year except for 2019 when we went too soon (late July) and it was still closed. Y'all had a great guide and both did very well keeping your heads. We've been caught in a few Hail Storms and glacier stuck but never on BB. Our JKU just rolled over 100k so we bought an F-250 & trailer and found your vid on strapping to trailer very helpful. Keep taking adventures together. Makes for a happy marriage (36 yrs). Hope to maybe tril with y'all someday.

Great video. That was a wild experience. My brother and I rode our mountain bikes up to the Tom Boy Mine out of Telluride in the beginning of July. It rained on and off all the way up and down, but it was nothing like what you guys experienced. We got that on a different day while out on a ride outside Cortez. The trail out literally became a wash. We see similar storms where we live in Tucson. Those crazy monsoon storms are no joke. You have to give mother nature "all" the respect.

So far this trail reminds me so much of appalacia...eastern Kentucky where my family is from. My own mountain of which ive inherited over 70 acres has a road cut out the side just like this with i think 5 switchbacks going up the hard way.
