New Engine Gets Old Parts

After driving the truck with the newer motor in it for the weekend I was very disappointed in it's performance. So I decided to pull the heads and the cam put of the old motor and swap onto the new motor... And I'm going to continue calling it a motor because I know 8t drives some people crazy, and that makes me happy... Anyway, we got everything changed over and right away even on start-up I was happier with it. It doesn't smoke any more, it fires up easier and has more power and I definitely got more grunt in the low rpm's. So I am very happy with the outcome. Of course right after we got it together and running we got a call for a stock truck stuck on Hells Revenge, he had gotten unstuck by the time we got there but we ran into some people in the parking lot needing a grinder so we helped them. Then we got back to the shop and got another call for a jeep broken at Potato Salad Hill, which is right near where we had been. So we drove back and helped him and the motor did great. So we hauled him down to his condo so he could do repairs there. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

When you mentioned questionable decisions with the motor rebuild,I immediately thought about the questionable decision that got you in that mess. Not that I haven’t made a few of those decisions myself. I know not many new parts get used by you but I wonder if you do have to buy the expensive stuff if the business wouldn’t give you a discount for mentioning their name as the supplier. Other channels also get a discount for there viewers if they buy from the same source.

You guys are what KZbin used to be, just some guys who love doing what they do and sharing it with us. I've been watching your channel for 3 years now and though you have grown in subscribers your attitudes have not changed and that is awesome! I love that you guys do pre-emptive strikes on the internet Karen's, most of whom can't do a quarter of what you guys do on a regular basis. I've broke my fair share of stuff over the years doing questionable things or just screwing up so thanks for sharing your fails, just shows you guys are the real deal. Keep up the awesome work, you guys Rock!

It is a pleasure to see REAL mechanics work! When I was a kid, back in the 50's and 60's, you could take your car to the local gas station and the mechanic there would do your repairs and rebuilds. In today's world you need a degree in computer science to even think of working on a motor. Good to see old school!

Glad you got Trail Mater back to a happy place. Would have liked to see more of the engine build. In general don't be afraid to make your videos longer (or more of them). Everything about them (content, camera work, scenery, editing, comradary and interaction amoung you guys, etc) is absolutely first rate. For me they are often over too soon, often left wanting for more.

HUGE props for not being a sellout. Not many left that makes great content without being fake and scripted you and Casey with Cascade Towing (or whatever it is) are the last remaining people not only in this field of content but any content its mostly fake scripts BS. However you need to reconsider a Patron account you can have this and not be a sellout just continue as you been doing and don't beat it into people's heads like all others every video "hey we got a patron go give me your food money to help making content for you" . Make a Parton post it in a header or something and let it be that. People are wanting to help your channel grow because we enjoy it and you. Make one and you just might be surprised. People like helping people that are in it for the right reasons and truly enjoy helping their fellow neighbors. You are a great role model for all. I don’t really know how this works but I’ve seen comments on KZbin videos that said something like subscription and a Dollar amount. They probably aren’t recurring like Patreon, and there is something to be said for having something that is independent of KZbin. Maybe Rory would feel obliged to offer something extra for Patreon subscribers and is not something he wants to spend extra time on.

I remain amazed that you could find an old junker pickup, yank the motor out of it, and put it into Trail Mater and it works. I'm really impressed with how you handled the recovery of the broken jeep 13:14. It was on a steep incline when you connected it to your truck. It looked almost nearly impossible for you to get both vehicles up the hill. But through your experience and by pulling differently on the two winches you had connected to the jeep, one that pulled upwards and one that pulled forwards. So you were finally able to pull the Jeep up even though it looked completely stuck. Really nice job! I am impressed👍😎

When you're cranking it (8:29).. and you hear the starter have like a pulse to the sound, where it revs high and low, high and low.. over and over. That means that one of the cylinders has lower compression than the others. The starter should sound very steady and repetitive. It's still fine-- that cylinder will still run, it just won't have quite as much power as all the others. I guarantee if you do a compression check on all cylinders, one is going to be lower than the others. If you had a scope, you could graph the current going into the starter and you would see that weak cylinder would cause the starter to pull lower current each time it passed it. This is called a "relative compression" test. Like I said, it's not as important on these old motors. But if this was a fuel injected engine-- it would be tripping codes for misfires and that whole mess. So luckily it's old school enough not to matter.

My understanding of timing and the TDC timing marks is that everything is relative. As long as you don’t have an interference fit and make it so things go bang to start with putting your own marks on it is all relative. As others have stated before me about factory marks and timing marks are all based on OEM. Once you start swapping and doing custom work it’s all about your knowledge on how it all works together. You guys are awesome and while I watch MORR for “glitz” I watch you guys for down to earth kick ass rig and recoveries. Please do the sand chute in one run with mater. 🎉

Rory, Mike, and Shawn you make a great team. Each of you has a profound input to the team. Shawn has strong mechanical abilities and skills. Mike has mastered the use of a pencil, not really, he just barely uses a pencil but, he has the camera gig going strong and mechanical abilities about matching with his pencil skills. I kid Mike he does have strong mechanical skills, he's well read, hasn't missed a copy of Playboy in his entire life, and he is dependable as the day is long. He's up before the crack of dawn and then still in a seat well after dark. Shawn is dependable too, I forgot to list that. Now for Rory, he never toots his own horn. He is more inclined to point out his weaknesses, as few as there are, and give credit to his team mates. He knows engines inside out and can make a 4 X 4 walk around like it has a mind of it's own with his double transfer cases. Driving is a strength that has Rory in demand all the time. He takes his team into places other people refuse to go, then he hooks onto a vehicle and drags it out. He has pulled side by sides out of holes where they are lying on their heads and turns them over, drags them out, and all the while minimizing damage to the vehicle. Guys you make a great team and you need to recognize your combined skills and abilities, and stand up and say we are good. Serious on everything I've said here.

Should write pray for me on the valve covers...that way every time Rory opens the hood he reminds himself not to act like a 16 year old! Y'all are great!

I bet you could just get new rods and put your old motor back together.. I'm sure the crank is still fine. You could probably get some used rods from 3bay for cheap (maybe).
