Last Minute Prep For Offroad Games 2024

After getting back from the Salt Lake Offroad Expo I drove the Scrambler home and it was not running good. We really need a vehicle with extra seats for the Offroad Games, so we had to hurry to either find a backup or fix the issue. We dug out Lilli's jeep to see if we could swap in the spare transmission I have for it, but that didn't work. So we tore into the motor and found a bad lifter, which probably flattened a lobe on the camshaft, and a bent push rod. Basically we will be rebuilding the engine soon. But until then we disabled that cylinder and got it back together. Then new axleshafts in the buggy and a final seat adjustment. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

It would not be difficult for Rory to MAKE a U-Joint press, and with as many U-Joints as you guys change it would pay for its self in short order. I had a very rusted in U-Joint that I, (a mechanic) took to the driveline shop for them to change rather than beat the fire out of my yokes. I would build one my self, but I change a U-Joint once every 4 years or more, and it just easier to take it to town.

Presses bend ears like NOW! Hammer them in and your good to go. I have a press and more often go to a hammer for U Joints, not always buttttt. PLUS there are no presses out on the trail so being good at it is a perk.

@@tomhubbard353 I can understand that, I have beat them in and out many times, but, how many times have you had a needle bearing fall out and could not get the snap ring in, and then had to beat it all apart to put the needle back in place in the cap? I have had that happen way more than once. I have also screwed up the cap. I have had to beat the yoke to get the joint to work freely too. A real U-Joint press will never distort the yoke. I have had to resort to cutting the cross in half in the field, and heat the yoke a bit to get a severely rusted joint replaced. I was a heavy equipment mechanic for 45 years, so I have done plenty of nasty U-Joints, but I prefer to take the real nasty ones to pros.

Love Lilly's Jeep. Bent push rods are usually an indication of over-rev, valve float, valve hitting piston. Before the days of rev-limiters being built into engine control computers, this was a common problem.

The Scrambler sounded like a top fuel funny car pulling up to stage when you pulled into the shop. The nice thing about the electrical tape bandages they are flexible and durable all the while allowing oil, solvents and other shop liquids to flow into the wound cleansing it.

You Rory are like my Father was in the 1930s. I was the youngest of 6 and learned from the best. 88years in Az. He was born in1912 the oldest sibling and went to Gilbert as a young man in 1933 to work for Conoco oil as a mechanic and in 1934 they told him if he wanted it they would pay for the lease on the property if he would give them their profits from the gas (ha) he agreed as he was an A Student at Mesa Highschool and we ended up being the oldest business in Downtown Gilbert. Then in 2021 when our town was being taken over by Bar's and Restaurant's we found we could sell our land for 3000% of what our Father paid. Now I watch you all do what my brothers and I did about like what you all are doing. We have had so much fun doing the same thing you all are doing now. I turn 71 on the 19th of March 2024, and my wife and I will be on one of many trips around the world. Love watching all you hard working crazies that reminds of my youth till now... You will be here too. Say hello to Lilli fo me. She riminds me of 2 sweet girls of mine that said Dad can we do this again. 4X4

Reminds me of a 400 I just built. It had a wiped lobe on the exhaust and a bent push rod on the intake of the same cylinder. Another seven cylinder. It drove into our shop like that wanting a "tune-up" to make it run better. We rebuilt the engine the more we took apart, the more wrong we found.

Lilli's jeep is the BEST!!! For 33 years we had our yellow '77 CJ7 and went everywhere in it!! Sure wish you'd been around in the late '80s when we got into trouble coming out of Bobbie's Hole on the really steep road! But guess you were still in grade school back then...Ha!

Don’t knock it till you try it. I ran a 350 V-7 for a couple years. But then it broke my crank in half and had no choice after that. But then I put a 383 stroker back in and it’s a power house.

When facing on the lathe go from inside to outside, you will get a much nicer finish. When you hear the bit chatter either slow the rpm down or make the cut deeper. In your case you had to much material hanging out of the chuck.

about five times too much stick-out of the three-jaw chuck. Either support the end with a deeper center drill or choke up onto the splines and use wooden wedges at the back of the headstock to keep the axles from whipping. Chatter means not enough support.
