Part two of our backpacking trip in the eastern sierras.
On day two we continued on the John Muir Trail towards Garnet Lake. Only about a 6 mile journey, but Kylee was dehydrated and significantly impacted by the elevation. We took our time and a couple electrolyte drinks later, she felt much better but we decided to not push to 1000 Island Lake. We heard from other hikers how busy it was and opted for Garnet.
This ended up being a great decision. Having stayed at 1000 Island Lake on a previous trip, I can say that I greatly preferred the solitude and scenery of Garnet Lake. It's a bit of a hike into the Garnet Lake Campsites, but we were rewarded with a warm sandy beach with beautiful views of the water and Banner Peak.
We swam briefly in the lake with the dog & waded in the shallow sandy parts for much longer. Our dog enjoyed being off-leash and free to roam around with me as I explored the many islands and peninsulas.
On day three we prepared to head back to the town of Mammoth lakes. We got a late start due to lots of photographing of magic hour on the lake with the mirror-like reflection of the mountains. We took the Garnet Lake Cut-off trail at the base of Garnet lake. I would only recommend taking this route if you don't have animals with you. Dogs can make it, but there was one section where I had to carry my dog around some boulders. After this short scramble section there is a steep down climb to the river trail which was easy going down, but would be little fun going up.
After getting on the river trail, it took some time to arrive back at agnew meadows and with it being the middle of the day (1pm) it was hot and uncomfortable for our dog. There was also one final ascent right before you get back to the trailhead. However, we finally made it back to our car and drove out to Mammoth Lakes Brewing for some beers and food. We were even lucky enough to see some live music while we were there.
We recorded about 20 miles with 3,000 feet of elevation gain, but it could be a bit less with some of the backtracking and off trail exploring. Highly recommend the trail, but be smart if hiking with your pup and don't do too much too soon.
