Trails in the Sky FC: Cassius vs Reverie

Everybody who has finished Trails in the Sky, First Chapter knows how the final boss battle ends. The giant Deathbot suddenly gets up again and Colonel Richard spends some time slicing it up, which looks admittedly badass, but then the construct breaks his sword, grabs him and prepares to finish him off. At that point, Cassius rushes in, smacks its right hand off and allows the party to finish it off in style by maxing out your craft gauge.
If your Bracer Rank is 5th class, however, which requires you to skip every sidequest and mess up nearly every important decision in the game, Cassius decides you're too inept to deliver the coup-de-grace and shows everyone how it's done by taking Richard's badassery and multiplying it by ten, showing that the only reason he doesn't eat giant death mechs for breakfast on a daily basis is because Estelle's cooking sucks too much to properly prepare them.
It also shows that Julia's statement about Cassius giving up the sword and taking up the bo staff signifying him wanting to better himself and protect people rather than kill opponents is utter hogwash. Anyone who hits like that doesn't need a sword to kill stuff. XD

So I was rewatching this and I noticed something really interesting, Cassius doesn't just overpower this thing. He takes out one of the legs, puts pressure on it by hitting the top of its head, forcing it to go down and disabling it from doing anything AND THEN FINALLY charges an attack and finishes it off. It has such simple yet amazing choreography here. Every move he does has a meaning. The machine has 4 legs meaning it probably needs all of those to balance, therefore getting rid of just one should break its balance, after that he can just put pressure on it to force it hug the floor, disabling it from moving, giving Cassius all the time in the world to charge a finishing blow. No big explosions, no shiny attacks, just a balanced and strategic movement. We actually see Zin talk about this in SC and 3rd. Cassius is able to understand the nature of things and that is his real power. He is not some demigod who can overpower anything in his path, he is just really good at finding a solution to a problem by analyzing it from multiple angles. Him being able to learn how to use a staff so mastefully is also a part of this.

It's not exactly the team I usually use. But since I was eager to get it over with (I had to play through the entire game over the course of one weekend and I used NG+ to avoid having to deal with levelling up) I simply picked the team with the highest DPS.

This reminds me a lot of getting the rank H "mansion" (Tent) in Luigi's Mansion. Basically you have to purposefully suck at the game to get it. ...This is a lot cooler than a tent though.

Colonel richard which was hyped to be really strong and showed to be so couldn't do much, cassius gets there and makes it look easy...

To be fair, Richard had just lost a battle when he was being 4 vs 1'd even crazier considering Zin is way more elite than the rest.

Staying on Bracer Rank 5 is takes a deliberate effort to mess up, since, apparantly, you can only be 3 BP off, which means that even if you skip all the sidequests, you can still pass that point by simply showing proper judgement during certain story sequences. (like the choice at the very beginning on whether to rush in on your own or in tandem with Joshua) People who play the game blindly will still do well enough to make it well past the point where this scene would be triggered.

Stijn van Empel I think it's a little easier than you're noting, given that the game never actually requires you to hand in the monster sidequests that you're forced to do. You still have to be absurdly careful, but you can mess up (by doing well!) a few times.

+Ryan Shim There are multiple points in the game where you are forced to report the story job, which will report every other sidequest you have completed alongside.

I just checked my endgame save file to be sure, and that never happened to me. No sidequests are in my Bracer Notebook. Also loaded up my end of chapter 1 save file, and proceeded to walk to the guild and report the Prologue sidequest.

I HAVE BEEN PLAYING THIS GAME FOR 5 FUCKING YEARS AND NEVER SEEN THIS!!!! Sooooo the question is , do we have stuff like this other games. Like I know in SC you get a different comment depending on your rank but is there a special one like this. Also could you tell me what Cassius says when your final rank is given. If I remember correctly it changes in this game too.

Nothing like this in other games, AFAIK. In SC, Olivier's comment changes depending on your bracer rank, but it's just a few lines ranging from him secretly praising Estelle's prowess to him humoring E-rank Estelle. It's been quite some time since I recorded this video, but IIRC, Cassius says something along the lines of "You barely squeaked by here. You'll have to try harder in the future."
