Milk Train 542 broke down inside the Fordell Tunnel in New Zealand and the locomotive crew made their exit on foot. The fire brigade were summoned to the Western portal on Denlair Road to assist the locomotive crew safely back to their train. The tunnel space would have been filled with carbon monoxide by this time. The incident happened on Sunday the 20th of December 2015 in tunnel No'3 on the Marton - New Plymouth Line.
When the train was able to be brought safely out of the confines of the tunnel and into the fresh air, the fire brigade then finished their tasks and headed away. And that is at the point where this video begins. The lead loco DL 9129 appears to be the affected loco and does not have it's engine running like DL 9325 behind it.
Train 545 was waiting at East Town and it's locomotives are sent to rescue 542. After the crew is satisfied that everything is ready, the train is able to leave the tunnel and head down the Matarawa Valley to the East Town yard.
The stainless-steel milk tankers are carring milk from the Manawatū and Tararua districts to the Fonterra Co-operative factory at Whareroa in Taranaki. The tankers are in service from Spring until early Summer only. Whareroa has a large processing capacity, that can take overflow milk from other factorys in surrounding regions.
The DL Class is the main locomotive used in New Zealands North Island.

It was not my locomotive, Im just a railway enthusiast. I had been videoing Paloma Gardens on Denlair Road that day and along the way, I just happened to see the fire trucks in the field and figured it was an operational excersize of some sort... Until a friend texted me the reason, then I returned in a hurry. Seems like a lot of soot/oil plastered over the lead loco. Without inspecting loco in question I would think engine damage /failure

Definitely possible. However, it's not an uncommon look on NZ diesel locomotives to be this grubby. Hence they're sometimes sent straight into the sea at the harbour for cleaning 😄 😉

The safety issues aren't always obvious. Carbon monoxide or other toxic gases can accumulate in a confined space like the tunnel. I suppose there's some risk of fire or explosion to be assessed as well. Steel barges and tankage can be extremely dangerous to enter without breathing apparatus because the rusting metal absorbs oxygen. Workers go in and don't come out, so uninformed rescuers go in and don't come out. Suffocation can also occur in fermentation tanks. We lost a good winemaker that way, and I lost a friend. I don't know what he was thinking. Maybe he slipped or lost his balance to begin with, but it was the C02 blanket that killed him.

Maybe you should contact Kiwi Rail, you might just get a consulting contract to advise them about a more efficient use of road power and possibly other money saving programs as well.

Я сам удивлен, что у них за поезда такие. Ну первый локомотив сломался, это ясно, потому и вызвал вспомогательный. Но длина и вес поездов вызывает вопросы. Может подъемы слишком крутые или маломощные локомотивы?

I'm afraid I have no idea what the problem was, sorry. I was making my way along a country road, heading somewhere that had nothing to do with train spotting. But I noted the fire brigade in a paddock along the way and realised something was up.

Greetings! Yes, New Zealand uses the 1067 (3'6'') track gauge. They started building the railways here from 1863 onwards. All the lines were short operations linking small coastal or river ports with an inland location. Different gauges were used as each line was independant from the other, with second hand materials and rollingstock that been imported from Europe & Austrailia. In the 1870's a central NZ government was formed and they wanted a national rail network to open up the economy. They decided on the 3'6" gauge. Inland travel was difficult because of the mountains, forests and swamps, so curves had to be tight and there were lots of tunnels to build. It had to be built as cheaply as possible. From the 1960's to the present day, they have enlarged the loading-gauge to accomodate ISO shipping containers. Freight trains are allowed to do a maximum of 85km/hr in New Zealand, but there are many places on the network where trains can only plod along at speeds much lower than that. The piece of line in this video has curves that can take a train at up to 65km/hr. The KiwiRail DL class was manufactured by CRRC Dalian 中车大连机车车辆有限公司 with engines from MTU (Motoren- und Turbinen-Union). Introduced from 2010 onwards, they are the most powerful diesel-electric locos in service in New Zealand (3,600 hp). The class represents the first order for a Chinese-built locomotive from a western country. The 9000 series allocation was chosen for this class of locomotive as the number 9 represents longevity and good luck in Chinese culture. There are 63 of the class in service in 2022. New Zealand followed English railway Diesel-Electric practise in the beginning, but eventually found the North American locomotive companies to provide the most reliable and robust Diesel-Electric locomotives for it's hilly network. But after 1981, no new Diesel-electric locomotives were purchased, as nobody in government or the private sector was interested in investing new locomotives. in 2010, our then centre-right government almost reluctantly put up the money to purchase a new fleet of locomotives from the cheapest bidder possible. It might look over-kill having two big locos on a small train, but the Eight 70 tonne wagons are near the limit for a single DL class on the 'Westmere Bank' further up the line. That gradient averages at about 1/35 (2.86%) but has a section near its top as steep as 1/32 (3.13%). It was opened on 28 June 1879 and is the ruling gradient of the Marton - New Plymouth Line.

О, брак в работе, вызов вспомогательного локомотива. Знакомая и неприятная ситуация. Приходилось и мне пару раз, за 40 лет работы машинистом, вызывать вспомогательный. Правда неисправности локомотива были такие, что я ничего не мог сделать самостоятельно.

KiwiRail puts 2 locomotives on the train so that if one breaks down; the other can continue. However, in this instance the lead locomotive caught fire in a tunnel, not just broke down (you can see the scorch marks). It was not safe to continue running the train, so crew made the decision to evacuate due to risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in the tunnel.
