Something about the three people being interrogated: A friend of me working at Deutsche Bahn told me that it's, as you said, routine to interrogate the driver, if available other train staff, someone from the infrastructure operator, and sometimes even more people from the involved railway companies. It is even done when someone commits suicide on the rails. Usually no one of them could have done anything to stop the accident and the interrogations are only done because the police etc. want to gather evidence.

I like it that you felt the urge to clarify something thats commonly overlooked by media: The fact that the public prosecutor will - automatically - be tasked with an investigation as soon as there´s an injured or even fatally injured person due to an accident. That is not limited to railways - it´s the same with road traffic or any other damage causing injuries to a person. So, the fact that there is an investigation by the public prosecutor does - not - imply any guilt to any party. The public prosecutor is just responsible to investigate whether there has been any negligence/deliberate act/etc.

Derailments will always happen. Rarely, but hard to avoid completely. I'd suggest to focus upon minimizing the catastrophic effects. A guard rail (Fangschiene, Wikipedia) is a proven method to prevent a railcar from leaving it's supposed path too far and turn over. It might be considered to install one in such crucial sections, where steep slopes or obstacles are next to the rail, especially on the outside of curves. It seems the heaviest and fatal destruction to the double-deck cars was done by hitting a mast oft the overhead power line.

I'm afraid your educated guess is almost certainly wrong. This type of stock cannot operate with the locomotive pushing and the front carriage stopped, indeed the most likely cause was a failure of the chassis or (more likely) the track itself which caused the center coach to become derailed. While most would believe a bad rail to cause the front coach to become derailed, that simply isn't the case as the oscillation of the first carriage going over rough track will be passed along to the coach behind, amplifying the effect of the rail defect. Drivers can run over defects and barely feel them while train staff at the back get thrown around. The defect would have thrown the second, third and fourth carriages off and the emergency brakes would have applied as soon as the contacts ensuring continuity were severed which would have slowed the train enough to prevent the final coach coming off.

The top soil consist of a thin layer of gravel but is almost always followed by meters of very plastic, wet clay and silt layers. A company asked me why they had to condense the soil for buildings and loading areas while Deutsche Bahn didn't. I shrugged my shoulders and replied ask your government. I have never seen a railway service as privileged as the german Deutsche Bahn. One minor nitpick: While the type of train is used as regional express (RE) elsewhere in Germany, this particular line is called "RB 6" ("regional train"?). One major issue: IMHO it is quite premature to assume that the front coach derailed first or the middle coaches got pushed off the tracks or down the hill by the locomotive; they weigh about 50 t each, and at 100 km/h that is a lot of energy on its own. The locomotive "only" weighs about 85 t. So I would recommend keeping an open mind about the accident sequence.
@rewboss2 жыл бұрын
This particular line is route number 5504, timetable number 960. It carries RB, RE and some IC trains (and, at its northern end, S-Bahn) services. I can't remember where I read it, but some reports did say it was an RE train (which would have had the line number RE61); however, other reports agree that it was train number 59458, which is indeed an RB train, scheduled to depart Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 12:07. It's confusing, because RB trains generally terminate where the S-Bahn begins, but this one continues all the way into Munich. Regarding the physics, remember that if the first coach comes to a stop, it's not just the mass of the locomotive you have to take into account: it's also the mass of the other four coaches (which at that point are also on the rails), plus the extra energy being supplied by the engine of the locomotive. As I said in the video, this is speculation, but it's the most logical explanation for how the middle coaches were forced off the rails. This is a common issue with push configuration in rail accidents. In the Selby rail crash of 2001, a train in push configuration hit a vehicle on the tracks and was deflected into the path of an oncoming train: investigators concluded that the severity of the accident was increased because even after the derailment the locomotive continued to push the train forwards.
@timlandscheidt2 жыл бұрын
@@rewboss Maybe, but in Selby it was reasonably clear that the train derailed first at the front after striking the intruding vehicle. I have another theory, if the sun was shining down on the track a lot it could create a buckle in the track. This can lead to a severe derailment.
@rewboss2 жыл бұрын
That's not "another" theory, just a possible cause for the first coach to derail -- which is pure speculation at this point. While rails can buckle, they shouldn't have done so here. The temperature that day was about 30°C -- hot, but not as hot as it can get in the summer -- and tracks are designed to withstand higher temperatures than that. They are built so that the rails can expand without buckling, and those tracks were laid a couple of years ago and have survived hotter weather than this.
@trainpuns22 жыл бұрын
@@rewboss I see, I still think the derailment has something to do with poor track maintenance or possibly something wrong with one of the wheels or trucks on the train that may have caused the shape of the track to change and causing a derailment, but you did say that the train came to a stop, correct?
@rewboss2 жыл бұрын
@@trainpuns2 Since the investigators have reportedly ruled out sabotage and human error, there's only technical defect left, which is almost certainly going to be either the wheels or the track. If the front of the train derailed, it certainly must have decelerated quickly -- it wouldn't have got very far with the wheels digging into the ballast. @stephanweinberger2 жыл бұрын
It's a fairly standard configuration in Europe. The big advantage of coaches over multiple units is flexibility. EMUs are usually a fixed unit. It would be much too expensive to have completely independent vehicles, so typically all the equipment to power the motors (pantograph, transformer, engine control, ...) is distributed between the cars. Hence if anything breaks it usually means that the whole unit has to be taken out of service. With a conventional train you just swap out a single car or the locomotive.
@stephanweinberger2 жыл бұрын
@@rewboss well there are double-deck EMUs available on the market, but those have their own drawbacks. Mainly lack of flexibility, as they always operate as a whole unit.

Why would you do this if you already have tons of Locomotives and only need to buy new coaches? The class 111 locomotive used on this train was built in the 70s and early 80s for express passenger trains. That are now long gone in favor of ICE trainsets. So the 111 locos continued to be used for regional trains, with the double deck coaches that were built in the late 90s and early 2000s. And since they had the coaches, they bought some new class 146 locos in the 2000s, and more double deck coaches to replace the aging standard coaches. So it's basically an endless string of "we still got" and "we only need to replace" that kept them using Locomotives and coaches.

I guess we will have to wait for the official investigation. In my opionion they have also to look for a brake malfunction at the front and the security of the push configuration. The engine driver at the front had no means to recognize any danger in time. After the derailment it was impossible to stop without further damage to the train and the passengers. The big question is if even the derailment was result of the engine pushing braking coaches of the track and if a pull configuration would have prevented any accident at all. They will find it and trains in the future will become safer. Regarding the security of the push configuration it will be observed with diligence because of the common usage of pushing engines.

@GaryCameron7802 жыл бұрын
The push / pull set up is part of the problem. Most of the North American railroads prefer not to do that.
@EnjoyFirefighting2 жыл бұрын
it's not a problem at all ... 50% of this train's trips are done by the locomotive pushing the train, it's plain normal operation all across the country. The reason for the derailment was not how the train itself was set up, but a material quality and maintenance issue on the track itself: concrete ties had horizontal cracks from side to side

It sounds like an unforeseen fault in the brake line caused the cab car brakes to suddenly lose pressure in an isolated manner, causing them in turn to apply while no other carriages nor the locomotive experienced a brake application. Wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being a conclusion from this investigation.
@Playmobil-wl4dp2 жыл бұрын
First - sorry for my bad English skills, Im a native German speaker :D So to your comment: That couldnt be like this. All coaches and the locomotive are connected by the air brake. You cant only brake with the "Steuerwagen" (first car in this setup) - you can, but then the driver does an big mistake, because its not allowed to use the direct brake/locomotive brake (in German: Direkte Bremse/Zusatzbremse). And when the air brake werent attached between the coaches and the locomotive, than the driver has ignored this because he wouldnt even get the braking power that such an coach setup normally have. That would mean, he has done an other big mistake. So I hope there werent many mistakes and you could understood this Text :D Greetings

The cab is the very last vehicle in the train. The derailed vehicles seem like still been pushed forward after they derailed. That means that the derailment has nothing to do with cab car braking.
@denzzlinga2 жыл бұрын
Even if this happens, it is super unlikely to derail a train like this. Of course everything will bump into each other, but trains are designed to take that a mount of slack. With freight trains for example it's totally normal to use only the Locomotives brakes, and just let the wagons bang into the Loco to get slowed down.
@Killerspieler08152 жыл бұрын
likely the rails were bad , they were sheduled for mayor rework before this happened ( => this nearly happened in "Blankenloch" (nearly desaster) the same way, a craked rail was not repaired due to soon rail replacement , but the rain of complaints of residents forced DB to react and weld the crack) ... & there was very bad weather weeks before ... or the boogies were bad like in Eschede

This type of Train (Bombardier Dosto) uses monoblock wheels. There is no railway tire mounted on the wheel.

Root cause of derailment mode: retarder mode or vehicle interaction mode. Not the rail , I think.

Just as is irrelevant when news anchors say that Germans died, it is as irrevelant to say that Ukraine refugees died. Is the life of an Ukraine refugee more worth than the life of an Ukraine that did not flee? Or that of Afghan refugee? Or that of a German? Is it more tragic if Danylo dies than the death of Peter? No it isn't, I really wish these phrases declaring the nation of people that just tragically died would end.

Great video, but why does it matter that 2 Ukrainians were in a multi-wagon double-decker train in Germany?
@NicolaW722 жыл бұрын
Because there´s a war in Ukraine and they were refugees who came to Germany for survival and they were killed by this accident in the country in which they came to survive. Therefore.
@rewboss2 жыл бұрын
It's just particularly poignant: they to escape a war, only to be killed in the place where they had sought refuge. They were both mothers who had their children with them; those children are now in a foreign country, their fathers fighting a war, and their mothers dead.

Pushing a train never made sense to me. Pull a saw, it stays straight. Push a saw and it tends to bend or buckle. That against a curve with natural resistance and you are just setting yourself for failure at some point. Yes, there is more to come. Sad.
@ObiWahnKnobi2 жыл бұрын
A saw encounters (compared to the mass) a LOT more resistance than a train. It is also a lot lighter. Of course there is a resistance - that's why every vehicle on rail has a minimal safe curve radius (with a safety buffer of course). And also the speed is reduced for particularly sharp curves - as was the case here. It's not that this a problem that was never thought of - it has been done for well over a century.

It doesn't have to make sense to you. It has to make sense to the engineers who know how that stuff works.

@@subway8448 true. But not everything lasts forever. It's just a thought based on practical experiances. Hey, even on my toy train set the train would derail if pushed from the rear. Anyway, I'm leaving this as it is till the findings come out.

Routine procedure that tells us nothing... welcome to Germany
@dfolt2 жыл бұрын
He is absolutely right, and it is nothing that is specific of Germany. Because people have died, the prosecution office with territorial competence will have to open an investigation, also in order to collect evidence, e.g. by seizing the train and other material evidence. And because this is a procedural routine, its mentioning in the news is somewhat phoney because to the non-knowledgable reader/spectator it implies that those responsible have already been identified.
