Basic, but functional, Metropolitan Vickers made good quality electric traction equipment, most proven in the 46 class loco's. Air gauges in Lbs and not KPA's now that is memory lane! Cannot beat that traction motor whine under power. Thanks Barrie, that was a cracker!

Hi Megacuber, a red set is Sydney's first suburban rail cars, built in the 1930s and on it was in service till the early 90s and got its name from its paint job (also called a red rattler). Thanks for watching

@@trainspottingwithbarrie As an ex Railcorp driver who has driven many an old red rattler, I can tell you the first position is Release & Running. 2nd position is EP (Electro Pneumatic) hold. 3rd position is Lap. 4th position is Service Application and 5th and final position is Emergency Application.

Do these old Rattlers have gears? if so how many ? also do the brakes use brake-pads? sorry for all the Q's, just curious. Love these trains. PS also do they have a start key (like a car) ? great video thank you. PPS what is the top speed of these trains?

Hi Jack. Thanks for watching. They don't use a start key, just an electric contact button. They use a set of resistance to control the amount of electric power sent to the traction motors, you can't stay in one set of resistance for too long as the resistor may burn out. Thanks for watching

Basically it's exactly the same as your model train set but with the controller on the train and a few zeros added to the voltage and current 🙂

There are 3 positions of the Master Controller. First position is called Series where the traction motors are in an electrical series circuit. 2nd position is called Series Parallel where the traction motors are using a combination of series and parallel electrical circuits. 3rd position is called Parallel where all traction motors are in a parallel electrical circuit. There used to be a 4th position known as Weak Field but most of these trains had this removed later in life. At any master controller position all 1,500 volts was being used with power going to traction motors and resistance circuits until Parallel position where all 1,500v was being used by traction motors. The idea was not to dwell in Series or Series Parallel for too long as resistances would start getting rather hot. And yes, brake shoes (not pads), were used against the wheels as friction devices to slow / stop the train. Top speed... well you would be pushing to get 80-90kph on flat ground.
