The thing I always liked about traveling by train is that you get to go through America's backyard and see little towns, nature, and a way of life that you would never experience on an interstate highway. Trains seem much nicer than 30-40 years ago when I would occasionally ride Amtrak.

The backside of many towns is an interesting look at what lies behind the facade- a lot of illegal dumping spots, some pretty woods, and great graffiti.

@bigwhig . i was thinking the same . . the train seems "much nicer" than years ago. When he passed through the area BETWEEN cars, you could hardly tell. Its just looks like one continuous hallway. Years ago, i recall walking back to the club car, and the area between cars was loud, cold, and you could actually see the ground moving under you as you scurried over the gap where the two cars connect. And there were No lighted signs on the wall that said "Dining Car This Way"; i was always afraid i would never find my space/seat when going back from dining . . you had to count how many cars you passed through when you left your room/seat, so you at knew when you got back to your specific car. 🙂

@@markgolden8710 the line that the silver star uses by my house is a csx freight line. Traffic isn't too heavy. Maybe 1 freight a day, and the amtrak passes by twice, running southbound at midnight then passes by again headed north at around 7am. I can always tell an amtrak train just by how long it sounds its horn and the fast speed it travels. Freight trains are much slower and extremely long, however they don't sound their horn anywhere near as long or as frequent as the amtrak.

That's because the airlines are trying to stuff as many paying passengers as possible in to a fixed amount of volume. If Amtrak wants more capacity, add a car.
@purselmer5931 Жыл бұрын
That's because there aren't nearly the amount of passengers that would ever make these cars completely full. Trains are much more vacant than airplanes. Subsidized by tax payers is the only way Amtrak can even hope to remain in business.

We did a road trip a few years ago: Texas, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Yellowstone, SaltLakeCity..... Was a LOT of driving & I anticipated fatigue would eventually settle in. So, I planned final leg of journey (SLC to San Francisco) via Amtrak. Was a wonderful 15 hours of relax & enjoy the view portion of vacation. Amtrak was booked to capacity, but still didn't feel crowded. Amtrak trip gave us a chance to unwind & soak in the previous 3 weeks of vacation memories. We chose "coach" and still got lots of rest. It helped that we had a respectful / quiet group of people in our immediate area. . Thanks for sharing your experience!

That is because Amtrak only own the tracks from DC to Boston, on which the Acela runs. Acela is the highspeed train. The other tracks belong to the freight lines and don't support trains running at that speed on the daily.
