Train Race: Metro North vs. Amtrak Regional

A train race between the Metro North and the Amtrak Regional went on through Westchester County, NY while heading northbound towards Stamford, CT for its first stop from New York. Eventually, the Amtrak Regional train won the race after the Metro North train made its stop in Westport, CT.

Experienced a similar 'race a number of years ago between an Amtrak AEM7/Amfleet consist and a 10 car NJT Arrow III that I was riding on. Cab on my train was even with the cab of the AEM7 when both hit each respective horn, after which we just took off on the Amtrak train for a bit. Ultimately, the Amtrak consist did a catch and pass on us.

F23A4 Accord Reminds me of a story in Trains magazine years ago describing a pacing out of Chicago between the Panama Limited to New Orleans and a South Shore interurban on its way to South Bend over the IC electric line out of Randolph Street. Quite a sight -- the elderly orange electric beside the sleek chocolate and orange E units. One of the few places, by the way, where electric and diesel passenger trains ran on parallel tracks.

The first part reminds me of the bridge part in Paradise (by the dashboard light) (extended version?) where a speaker's voice is ramping up tension about what I still perceive as a sports game but should be a reasonably subtle reminder about a couple engaging in foreplay or sex.

No, they would or could not since both trains are controlled by a central dispatch which can see their speed. They are limited to their set speeds governed by that local dispatch and track. Railroads are highly regulated and a simple infraction, such as speeding can lead to a immediate job termination. The MN has a set regulated speed that is different than Amtrak in that location. Each track also can have different set speeds on a particular day.

They were doing this with a Budd car commuter to Poughkeepsie vs Amtrak in the seventies. Our Budd car was on an outside track north of Croton. We were bouncing so high I wonder how we did not go into orbit.

It's a credit to the fettlers (track workers) that these massive machines can be running side by side so fast and so close with barely any deviation. Of course they have to get it right otherwise disaster will be the end result. But it always amazes me how humans can be so intelligent - as in this case - yet so dumb with the advent of Covid-19...on so many levels. Great video.

I believe the reason why the Amtrak Intercity train pulls ahead suddenly is related to train protection systems like ATC, ACSES, and PTC. The train has to follow a given speed or the emergency brakes will apply(no it will not do this if your going too slow).
