I love the "go get" method. My dog is a very high energy breed and the first time I had to go after him it was literally a 25 min pursuit. I just kept following him around the yard. Not fast enough to tire me out but just enough so he never got a moments rest. He finally submitted and I couldn't even remember where I called him from so I just walked him back to the patio and made him sit down. Once. That was the only time I needed to do that with him. This method changed his recall 100% it was like having a new dog. Now he still gets lots of love and treats and 90% of the time he comes with enthusiasm. That last 10% he may be grumbling about it..but he is still coming when called. Total game changer.

I have a 5 month old puppy and you gotta be really patient and enthusiastic with them! I found the easier way to go get her is if I call someone just to stand to a side she would run, so I corner her on the other side, not in a mean way, just hold her and show her where I wanted her to go. If I'm alone I squat, almost sitting on the ground and go all festive calling her, with her favorite toy and then reward her with that AND a treat, she *still* thinks it's a game, but if I stand up it's worse, so showing her I'm not going to run and that the come is for a positive reason is slowly showing her it's a nice thing to do. Also, do the come in middle of play or food time, don't let your puppy think that come = bad thing (such as fun is over or to scold them). Like he said, the come only gets serious when they are older and capable of making choices, as puppy they have a hard time concentrating and the entire world is sooo interesting, why are you more interesting than that bush that's shaking and probably has weird smells? You gotta show them you are haha

You're completely right about learned helplessness. People always just assume it's a bad thing, but it's actually incredibly good in some circumstances. In horse training, there are DEFINITELY times you want the horse to give up because he has learned helplessness instead of reacting dangerously.

I love how you explained what to do with younger dogs first, so people don't just go grabbing their young pup left and right. And I do totally agree with not letting your commands, whatever you ask of your dog, go meaningless by letting them ignore you. I do think you could add that the grab method is one way of doing it. And that it doesn't work with all dogs. My latest rescue does not react well to being grabbed; she completely flops down on the floor, belly up and pees all over herself. Well yeah, no, the grab is obviously too intense then. She used to live on the streets in a country where dogs are treated like vermin, so who knows what she's been through. When she won't come inside or something, I do go to her, but I won't grab. I stand next to her, give a stern look and point to the door. That was enough for her and I only had to do it a few times. And now she knows that when I tell her to come, she needs to come. Still training to do it outside and off leash. I'm watching your videos about that and taking away what I like. The hand touch! That was so brilliant! She does it amazingly well already. Thank you for that.

I thought one taught come by using a super long leash, letting the dog wander to the end, say "come"and then do little tugs to get them to come back. But I see how treats and clapping etc would get a little puppy coming to you w/out leash. Thanks.

I got ahead with my dog's training after reading " Forward Fast Dog Training ". Found out how to stop my dog from jumping on people. Learned that you quick turn your back on the dog when they jump and leave the room through the door. When dog finally stops jumping you give him a treat.

LOL! 😂 We had a husky once. His recall was excellent. But he couldn't be left unattended in the yard, ever. He could dig under a fence in the blink of an eye, scale a fence like cat burglar. He was the friendliest, funniest dog... but his ability to escape was insane.

@@stevecullen2265 I use an e-collar with my huskies so that I know it will be safe and reliable to allow offleash freedom, which is very important to me. I free-fly my birds...there's no way I'm not going to have offleash adventures with my dogs, huskies or not. I know that Beckman doesn't use e-collars, but some breeds are more stubborn and instinct-driven than others. We practised offleash recall a whole lot when they were puppies and rewarded them with treats. However, it was clear that when subjected to distractions, they would not always listen. They wouldn't run away, they would always eventually come back after doing whatever they felt like doing, but it wasn't the kind of recall that would be safe and reliable in different situations. That's one of the reasons why I wanted to look into e-collars and how to utilise them. I think they're brilliant. P.S. I've trained one of our dogs using the e-collar and his recall is a hundred times more reliable. I am going to work on training the other dog next. But I am already enjoying how much more I can do with him now.

Learned helplessness is not the term for it. It is knowing that some things must be done whether the dog likes it or not, and we call that responsibility. You are absolutely correct on the method, I studied Koehler for years and it's my preferred method and I use the technique all the time. Never fails to work. Best of all it's kind to the dog.

My biggest issue is he gets distracted so easily (beagle.....), doesn't come all the time, runs full force to people or dogs to say hello, is a piranha. Great information no nonsense approach. Dogs have to come to you every time under all distractions like their life depends on it because it does. A dog properly trained on an ecollar is also an amazing tool. Not sure how realistic it is to constantly go after your dog and make them come to you definitely a useful strategy in the beginning but in the real word particularly with my high drive working line gsd ecollar every time.

Wow. I figured this out on my own with my newest, trying to get him away from the neighbors. Their dogs are inside a radio fence, and my dogs are continually allowed to violate the leash laws. They are *not* however, allowed to cause any problems, and will not only quietly let dogs get walked by, but even squirrels run across the street right in front of them! *That* took some diligence! Anyway, I just started going next door and getting "Gunner" with a leash. Only took a couple times and simply threatening to come git him, while maybe brandishing the leash, would be enough to stop his permitted playtime and make him listen. I normally strive to talk to all my dogs politely in complete sentences, like I would my child. I am amazed and proud of how consistently he *now* responds, to a calmly spoken: "Gunner. Would you please come on home now?" If he hesitates, I may follow up with something like: "Come on! I don't wanna have to *come n git you* " Don't have to use or show the leash anymore...knock on wood...but sometimes still gotta talk mean.

Love this. Question for you!! What if your pup (9 months) is playing with other dogs and you can’t catch her? I’d say she responds to “come” always when it’s just us out in the yard. But when you introduce a dog that she really likes into the picture it’s almost like my “come” isn’t even heard by her. Appreciate your help!!

@@strawberrybluu we dont have many dog parks around sadly. And one of my dogs is really rude to other dogs, and if he is loose he would be running up to them, snarling, jumping in their faces. Its really a recipe for disaster. He has been socialized with a stable group of around 10 dogs since he was a pup so I don’t get why he does this. The other dog is much more respectful of other dogs and would never do anything like this. I think a long line is what I will be using for the trouble maker I’m afraid.

THANK YOU!!!! I did this with my dogs (growing up I was the animal whisper) I trained a few dogs in my life (horses,dogs,goats,rats, ect.). Then life got busy now im close to retirement and my last little dog is getting slower, I got myself a GSD puppy (what was I thinking🤔😵‍💫🥴 lol ) checking on refreshing my knowledge. one of the things they say is do not "grasp" your dog by the "collar" to "make" them do "something". I thought the logic made sense (kind of)... I have said off the bed way too many times ... I got my bum off the couch pulled his 115lb bum off the bed saying (OFF) now a few times and when I get up YOU BET HE moves. (He even will go in room look at bed and lay on the floor. So it does work.

If you let your dog repeatedly ignore you up to a year old then you have to spend a lot of time undoing this unwanted behaviour. I kept mine on an extension lead as pups and NEVER let a recall go unanswered, just by tugging "non aggressively" on lead to get pups attention back to me and my recall. Had perfect recall throughout their lives .

This is what I had worked out with my jack russell-- he knew if he came back to me, even if he had bolted off after a squirrel or whatever, even if he was 'naughty' -- as long as he came back to me when I called, there was no issue. If I had to go collect him, that's when he was in trouble. So if he ignored my first call, I generally had to take about two steps in his direction and he'd come flying back to me like a bat out of hell 😂😂

Despite diligent training from a young age, including taking a no-nonsense approach and going to get her when she doesn't come, my dog has always been rubbish at recall because she literally does not care about treats, toys, affection, none of it interests her. What interests her is going where she wants to go and doing what she wants to do. Bringing her in from the garden is fine, I usually have to go get her but so long as I use the right body language she gets not to bother messing around and running away, but if we're on a walk and she finds an animal to chase or track, she ain't comin back til she's bored. Most of her walk time has to be on-leash. We're able to let her off more as she gets older, cos she's often too lazy for adventures, but it's been a bit of a shame not being able to let her explore as much because she won't come back when we need her to. She's a husky x border collie if anyone's wondering. I've had collies before and they've trained recall fine - guess the husky stubbornness and independence was strong in this one 🙄

I am still working on my Husky, she's 13 months old and her recall is really good, until she's heavily distracted. I do use an ecollar for these instances but also take her out without her collar. We have 4 acres so she get's a lot of practice. So it would be good to see a Husky video on recall, they're not as easy as some breeds. We have a golden doodle and she has perfect recall and she's 9 months old, same training from me. I am a novice by the way. I also want to add that I love your videos.

Hey Joel ! 1st off this is the second comment I’m writing you , the first one was mysterious taken down within an hour of me posting it . It like this was /is nothing more than an constructive comment to help you better understand some of the training methods you attempt to explain on your channel , so kindly leave this one up you & your followers might find it very helpful. After viewing your lesson on recalling your dog it probably should have started with explaining to the viewers than a STRONG FOUNDATION in basic Obedience ( on leash ) will help greatly a transition to LONG leash which in turn leads to off leash . That being said there are always people that move to fast meaning that their control over there dog should B almost perfect in all situations on a 6ft . Once that happens your dog has achieved 2 major hurdles 1) they have been conditioned to what a command means & there 4 has developed a pack leader respect4 you as such , 2) your dog has ( if exposed correctly to a variety of distractions) learned to always B watching you 2B ready for your next command . Also as a trainer you’ve developed these to major quality’s 1) discovered your center where you feel comfortable & confident in controlling your dog in All Situations 2) discovered that you expect your dog 2 listen 2 your commands BUT still R ready & able 2 give a correction in an instant as if it were reflex . Lastly rather than having 2 start by going 2 physically get your dog working them on a long leash which would give U the ability to give a correction if needed , but not saying in some situations ( in the beginning U won’t have 2 ) but building the correct foundation will greatly lessen that occurrence.
