I just returned from Melbourne back home to Edenhope (an hour drive from Horsham) via The Overland ... V/Line ... next time I go back to Melbourne, definitely going Red Premium. I've driven so many times from home back to Melbourne, but I found the train so more relaxing and comfortable. A great video, thank you.

My partner and I were fortunate enough to be on the Overland with you at the time of this comment on your return leg to South Australia. Just wanted to say what a great channel you have and you were a great bloke to talk to…. Enjoy the journey. 🚂

Yes! I've been waiting for this video to drop. As usual, a comprehensive report. Leg room is beyond airline first class! If time is no issue, I will be taking the Overland.

You'd really need to master the art of doing nothing to appreciate a train journey like this. Yeah, its something you'll need to try at least once.

Really enjoyed this review - very thorough! I've been on The Overland in Red Premium but it was many years ago and the offering (particularly food wise) has been significantly upgraded since then. I'm hoping to take The Overland from Melbourne to Adelaide later in the year (pending any travel restrictions - of course!). :)

Thanks for popping by. Yeah I was booked on the Overland tomorrow but they've canceled it. Replaced it with a bus service! We didn't want that but trying to get hold of Journey Beyond is impossible. So we're flying back to Adelaide tomorrow.

@@ryansofly Yes - while their onboard service is generally impeccable, their off-train customer service, leaves a bit to be desired. My parents were booked onto an Overland service in January and when JBR changed the operating days for 2021 services, my parents didn't receive any notification - luckily I was with my parents and let them know it was leaving a day earlier than they thought (they tried calling JBR to double check but because it was a weekend, it wasn't possible to get hold of anyone).

Ryan So Fly great presentation lounge chair travel for me in 2021. Great to compare my only 1994 old broad gauge Adelaide to Melbourne Overland daily overnight service on Australian National at the time First Class sleeper private self contained suite with shower and toilet. We had a Club Car with food and drinks as well. Time flew! Breakfast served with newspapers in my suite in the morning. I used the Overland Motorail service as well with my car onboard. My car was also washed by AN on pick up in Melbourne... a clean car... unexpected wow. How things have changed to today in 2021 on The Overland. Many thanks. Ansett 727.

@@ryansofly Sorry but no recollection of photos taking at the time 1994. Did The Overland to Melbourne with my Chrysler 1978 CL Valiant on board weekend trip for me had to fly back to Adelaide on AN Ansett B727-277 to work for the mid week. Then flew AN B767-277 back to Melbourne following Saturday 10 am service remember did not get a window seat but stuck in in the middle seat in the middle set of 3 on the 767! Weekend in Melbourne driving back to Adelaide in my car. They were the days! Still have my pink floor Terrycloth with The Overland embossed floor mat! Ansett 727.

Hi, I will travel to Adelaide next year in January from HK if the border is opened for traveller. I am interesting to take this train journey from Adelaide to Melbourne. How much is the fare of the red premium and when can I book the Overland ticket before travel?

Howdy FF, thanks for popping by. I paid slightly over AUD 200 for this. It varies according to season so it's best to check the website. Head the the website for Journey Beyond. Date availability will be listed there.

@@ryansofly I haven't travelled on long distance trains except XPT Sydney to Brisbane - pretty bloody average. Knew a friend of mine did Rocky to Brisbane on the electric tilt and food, drink prices are shocking. Foods same for both business and economy.

@@mb3558 unfortunately the situation for long haul train travel in Australia is pretty dire and shameful. Unless you're on the Ghan / Indian Pacific, everything goes downhill very fast from there. Even the Overland feels very old.

Great review! I think they should upgrade the service so that it's more appealing to provide a broader appeal, and the interior design of the carriages is awful. Still, I would be prepared to give it a go. Thank you!

Thanks for popping by... The whole feel of Overland is they're on borrowed time. They're just doing the bare minimum to keep it going until the subsidies expire. Still, its a nice way to spend about 11 hours if you're not in a rush.

on Amtrak there are numerous cities you can catch North and South, as well as east and west transcontinental railway journeys, even in canada. Also there are cities in European part of Russia one can do the same too, so Adelaide is not the only one in the world. Nonetheless good video, well put together and narrated.
