Hi Adam! Andy here (I was the onboard musician for this trip 😉) and just wanted to say of the many features/reviews I've seen of Journey Beyond trains over the years, yours is by far the most comprehensive and informative, not to mention the best narrated. Very impressed with your professional yet friendly finish on this video! I've since hung up my train guitar after 7 years on the rails, but it's great to be able to relive this awesome trip through such a great watch! Thanks for the features here and I look forward to seeing more of your travels!

How a country as big as Australia still doesn't have a high-speed passenger train service in 2022 is a sad indictment on how neglected our rail services are and have been for a long time.

I agree, I was born in Barcelona, have been in OZ for 63 years, now I am 76 I have been back many times and have used the fast train in Spain called the A.V.E ALTA VELOCIDAD ESPANA. HIGH VELOCITY SPAIN. I love it have done since it started The first AVE service was inaugurated in 1992, when I came to OZ in 1961, I was 14, I was used to ride the Metro as well in Barcelona, which is over 100 years old. I have always thought, why not OZ Never mind, I have enjoyed those services, I know how good it is.

Economics, the cost per km and time it takes compared to flying is just too great for anything but holiday trips. I'm going from Brisbane to Townsville for Xmas this year, $571 return, 2hr flights. No train service irrespective of speed is going to be remotely competitive.
@theaussiewhinger Жыл бұрын
@@HarldinExactly. It is precisely because of our country's size that the economics don't add up. Between some east coast cities I think it could work, but certainly not for transcontinental routes.

Really nice trip on the great southern , the food looked delicious I especially loved that Pork & Wagyu hehe. The single cabin look nice and cosy, The trains just look so old and need bit of TLC including the outside, you want travellers to at least feel the train experience will be luxurious from the moment you get on. I know comparing tourist trains between Australia and Japan/China is like apples and oranges but its so hard not to when you've experienced it. and the end arrival at freight terminal is bit ghetto but understand as you explained and thats the wonderful think about your video's the commentary and we learn alittle more. Can't wait to watch the next video

Stumbled on your presentation of the "Great Southern" quite by chance. WOW! As a former rail worker, I am familiar with much of the route taken by this service. You have excelled in your description of the laid back atmosphere this journey embraces and I love that you showed the menus for all meals, the on train brochures, the off train tours you experienced and the meal time atmosphere (including glances at each of the menu options). I'm glad you featured the Cougal Spiral as you missed the other one at Bethungra (but maybe you were indisposed for that one - and Cougal is a lot more scenic). I intend to publicise this presentation with my circle of friends and also several overseas contacts. Very well done! And if I win Tattslotto in the near future, this itinerary may well be on my bucket list.

Hi Michael. It's so good to get that feedback, particularly from a former rail worker. Thank you! I did see the Bethungra Spiral but that was during breakfast so I wasn't really able to get any good footage of it. Hope you get to go on this train ... you'll definitely enjoy it! :)

Every politician for who knows how long has always promised a very fast train network every election, and after ever election you never hear of it again. Reason: we simply do not have the population to economically justify the expenditure for a very fast rail network. If you need to get to other states we have very good domestic airlines and not bad prices, so you use that
@blackletter2591 Жыл бұрын
Agree. Australia seems to have given up on intercity train travel as a service rather than a tourist destination (overpriced). I went on the IP and a lot of the good scenery was passed at night.

Really good video. Very sharp images (I watched on a 4K monitor). Informative without being gushing. Tad 'Janet and John' in places - 'Now let's look at the train being hitched up' and "Now let's look in the cupboard' 😊. Really inspired to try this train on my next trip to Australia to watch the 2025/26 Ashes. The compartments looked newer and more modern than those I've experienced on the Indian-Pacific (2017) and The Ghan (2023) - Gold twins on each occasion but I'll be in a single on The Great Southern. The scenery and the off-train trips look very interesting too (especially when compared with The Ghan, which I was disappointed with), but would have liked bit more on the other off train tours at each stop. Thanks.

Thank you! TBH I had to Google your Janet and John reference. 😂 Great to hear the video has inspired you to consider taking this train. It is a shame that in South Australia there is no more country public rail transport. Once upon a time South Australia the state had a vast rail network. The tourist trains depart and arrive from Keswick(an industrial waste land)and you can not connect with a suburban train to the CBD. I worked for a short period at the terminal and as a rail buff I have always been concerned about the track in the station, it looks poorly maintained(to me it does, my opinion) Most people will never get to experience interstate rail travel in today's world and to me that is a shame. Enjoyed this, thank you. So... just a quick question if I may: if you hand in your main luggage at the beginning separately... how to you get to your clothes mid-journey? (Considering most First Class passengers won't be carrying spare clothes in a day bag.)
@FromtheWindowSeat2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You take a small bag / cabin bag type luggage onto the train with the clothes you need for the journey. I took a small cabin bag and a backpack and that was enough.

@@FromtheWindowSeat - cheers for the answer. Seems a little odd to me though. I mean, sure, it'll be fine for most people, but some passengers might still want access to more stuff, and said stuff might not all fit all in one go inside the day(s!) bag for the duration!

@@zeeox My uncle brought his medium sized suitcase on board so you can probably fit it in the cabin … just might not be so easy to stow out of the way.

@@FromtheWindowSeat - Thanks again for answering so quickly once more! I guess storage is the big issue with overnight rail trips of any sort, anywhere. But I suppose, for me, I think I'd just like all my stuff with me close-by... especially if the trip itself is the "holiday" rather than simply the transport solution to it, if you follow me, and also, if the journey is a long one and includes more than one night... and also has off-train mini-trips, like this one does!

I would love to get to Brisbane this way instead of flying, next time I come to Australia. Having family split between the two cities. I plan to stay in Adeliade for about a week, and two weeks with family in Brisbane. How often does this train run?
@FromtheWindowSeat2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the train only runs in December and January when The Ghan is not operating, and only operates once a week in each direction during that time. So that limits the possibilities somewhat.

I soooo want to do this!!! I love trains! Took an Amtrak trip in the US from New Jersey to Oregon in 2015 and LOVED every minute of it. This train looks MUCH NICER than Amtrak, which our Congress has refused to adequately fund for decades now. (Gotta keep wealthy people from paying taxes, you know. 🙄.)

You definitely should if you get the chance. I’ve been on a few Amtrak long distance trains and although they’re not as nice as this one, they are a lot cheaper (and were enjoyable trips) so I guess it’s all relative. 🤔

Wonderful journey from Adelaide to Brisbane with a most friendly guide. What a shame the train does not run all year.
@FromtheWindowSeat2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! True - but they’d need more carriages to be able to do that because they mostly use The Ghan carriages when that’s not running.

Excellent, I recognise a lot of the towns as they have racetracks - yes i am a gambler !!. But I am a pea, pie & mash guy. Would this be a good rail trip for me ?
@FromtheWindowSeat9 ай бұрын
Thank you! Hard to say re food ... there are always quite a few choices on offer, but it is fine dining style. You won't get pies and mash but with 3-4 choices on offer, hopefully you can find something you'd like. And at breakfast you always have the choice of a full hot breakfast, so I imagine that would work for you.

An excellent, well filmed and very informative video - much better than most tv travel programmes. Well done! I'm intrigued by the carriages with 'curved' corridors, don't think I've ever seen them on a train before - and wonder about the design of the cabins off them?
@FromtheWindowSeat2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much - really appreciate that. Yes, only the single cabin carriage has that curved design ... I think it's meant to maximise space on each side. The design of all the passenger cabins in the single cabin carriage (regardless of which side you're on) is the same as the cabin I was in.
