To all the people saying hes a noob for over shooting stations or whatever, ive been a train driver in real life for 10 YEARS and even i make mistakes on the job not everyone is perfect, not even the most experienced people in the world are perfect. Its only a game for fuck sake cut this guy some slack hes obviously not a pro so let him learn in his own ways. And if you dont like what you see then SHUT UP AND DO ONE.

If it makes you feel any better, sometimes real engineers have to put the train into emergency to stop from sliding past a passenger station too. I've done it two or so times this year alone, so don't listen to the haters who say you can't operate a train.

Hi tmlfan316! Sometimes leaves get on the rails and release oils onto them that stop the wheels from keeping cohesion with the rails. The lack of friction can more than quadruple your stopping distance. There are times, depending on the grade, that you can apply the brakes and the train will actually accelerate! It's a scary feeling but it happens every fall where I operate. Ice, rain, and other in-climate weather like dew can also make it a lot harder to stop. (or go!) Most people ask "well why don't you put on brake sooner?" - Would you believe me that the first time I slid by a station, I hit a 12 car platform at 18 miles per hour and, even with the emergency brakes applied, couldn't stop? That's over 1,020 feet of sliding! There are also times, usually when operating our passenger diesel equipment, where the train won't release air fast enough and you end up sliding past a station. That has more to do with the fact that our equipment doesn't have a very intelligent braking system, which makes precision stopping exceptionally difficult and almost guesswork. Whenever I get a trainee, I can almost bet they'll pull a door off the platform sometime during the day. Our training program is 14 months long, and during that time people platform at least ten times. (I've see a lot more!). By the time you're a qualified Locomotive Engineer, you'll typically averages somewhere between one to four misplatforms a year. It has nothing to do with skill, it's just reality. tmlfan316, Sure it does. If the train isn't slowing like I need it to, that means I don't have control of my train. That's an emergency condition. Look, I'm just telling you how we do it in the real world. Emergency is sometimes used to stop a passenger train. Not every day obviously, but the handle position is there for a reason. Thanks.
