I think you'd go a lot faster if you didn't have such an enormous boiler pressure drop when you started. I'm not sure if you are familiar with cutoff - but the reverser serves as a way to adjust the valve timing and control the amount of steam directed to the cylinders. If the reverser is at 100% foreward, you are using a large amount of steam. It's good when starting off, but as soon as you start accelerating you'd almost want to bring it down to 50% foreward, or whatever stops the PSI from dropping. Cutoff is one of the best ways to deliver maximum efficiency when used properly
@steamtrainfan95424 жыл бұрын
Next you should do the Pennsylvania S1 vs LNER A4. The A4 gets to around 130mph-140mph, and the S1 is said to have gone around 140mph-150mph-160mph, but it probably couldn't go that fast due to the tracks it ran on, so it went around 100mph-120mph.

To be honest, I like British locomotives more than American locomotives, and I'm American! The reason why I like British locomotives is because they have some much detail on their design and they have so much good history about them, like the E2 class tank engine. American locomotives are ok and do have good designs, but British locomotives just have something I can't explain.

I do have a complaint. you set Mallard's speed to 80, which is kinda unfair. You should leave it unlocked since they could go around 90 on flat terrain (Mallard reached it's top speed going downhill with a full load. damaged the center piston too.) Both engines are capable of going over 100 mph, so you should give an honest race, no restrictions, and no downhills.

The UK is known for making their trains go fast. The US is known for making their trains strong. It doesn't matter which one is better. Each train has it's own strengths and weaknesses. Let's use Big Boy as an example. It's not very fast and trains like Mallard can outrun it. That's where Big Boy makes up for in strength. It can pull far more than Mallard.
@nikerailfanningttm90467 жыл бұрын
The reason for our famous Daylight's air horn is for the whistle, in real life when the GS-4's like 4449 pulled the Daylight streamliner, when the GS-4's where highballing down the tracks, the whistle was positioned adjacent to the smoke stack so the whistle couldn't be heard that well so the air horn was used, it made it more noticeable to hear a oncoming Daylight while highballing. The cab of the GS-4 and GS-6 and GS-2 is a "all weather" cab, so if it were storming outside like a snow storm or heavy rain, the crew could be completely isolated from the weather and continue operations without any problems such as coldness from snow or wetness from rain. So when you say it's a diesel-steam locomotive, think again, think Southern Pacific
@BalticFilms1447 жыл бұрын
Actually the reason why 4449's whistle is next to the stack is because Doyle McCormack moved it there so he had the ability to quill it. All Daylights had pedal valve whistles which were right in the middle. The GS-1s, 2s and 3s also had open back cabs. The GS-4s, 5s, and 6s had the all-weather cab. The air horns were added because fog could get thick on the coast line route. The horns were designed to pierce through the fog vs the whistle. It was also more convenient to use in the city or at high speed.

Sorry if you don't really understand this, but this is kind of physical. The reason why Mallard got the head start is because Mallard is much smaller than Daylight. So basically Mallard didn't have to carry as much weight so it can go faster. But Daylight is much bigger and heavier. So it had to carry more weight and try and gain speed. It's like carrying a giant weight and trying to run without falling over. Then Daylight was catching up because the weight (things might get confusing) was pushing daylight by the momentum. And Mallard didn't have to much weight to carry. Mallard weighs (167.6 t; 184.8 short tons), and Daylight weighs 788,730 lb (357,760 kg) So if you want to correct me on anything and expecting me to respond, I'm not going to respond. I'm sorry.

C'mon! Why do have to set Mallard to only 80?? That was an unfair race. I myself am an American, but I would love you more if you set the engines to the proper speeds! I honestly don't care if Mallard wins! Those who would make a fuss should just quit whining and suck it up as Mallard being the fastest steam engine ever built should be no surprise. Don't pit US vs UK. We're supposed to be friends not rivals! America doesn't suck when it comes to steam locomotives, and we don't need an unfair race to prove it! Remember, it's not all about speed. Listen England, you may have the world's fastest steam locomotive, but we've got the world's largest! *cough* Union Pacific Big Boy *cough* You see? BOTH nations have their own things to be proud of, so it would be futile to compare them. Rather, we should admire what BOTH nations have to offer. No one is better than the other because they already have different rail systems.

Even though Britian Technically has the fastest locomotive, the GS-4 operated regularly at speeds over 100mph, while pulling 18 car trains along almost the entire length of the Pacific Coast of the US. If put next to each other, on level ground, with a few coaches thrown in for good measure, the GS-4 would probably be evenly matched, if not faster than the Mallard.

Great video. If this was a real race then Mallard would win. The Daylights operated at 100 mph and, as we all know, Mallard ran at 126 mph. The daylight is a southern pacific GS-4, and that loco, 4449 is preserved and in excursion service. Most Southern Pacific steam locos did have a horn. If you have the cab forward DLC, and press Q, you sound the horn. Most SP steam locos had a horn because of fog on the Pacific coast. Also I love seeing US and UK locos next to each other to see the size difference.
@Randolph19247 жыл бұрын
Jacob Rubin the problem with your claim is that both the A4's and the GS4's have 80 inch drivers, hence a very similar top speed. In addition to that, the GS4's did constantly reach 100 mph, but also higher. These have never been fully authenticated though. Another thing to point out is that mallard was running downhill when she reached 126, and probably wouldn't have the power to reach 126 on level track with the same load. She also broke (partially) when she reached that speed. While she did beat the speed record, it would be more of a struggle to beat a larger version of her (the GS4) on level or uphill tracks. If your going to point out that the GS4 lost, here's something I've noticed: most of the time, whatever he drives loses

Hi. Fan of the rails here. Believe it or not, the Southern Pacific GS-4 class 4-8-4s (the class that the Daylight 4449 belongs to) were recorded over 100 mph on some runs. So, while the Mallard is a fast and beautiful, the Daylight, however is built for power and speed... just takes a bit longer to get there.
@slartibartfast26492 жыл бұрын
Mallard was recorded at nearly 130mph... American locos are for longer ranges with heavier freight than British or European ones. It is simply a result of the size and low density of population in the US.

It’s Ben Wilmarth again. You could do a race with Mallard against Chesapeake and Ohio 614. Did you know that C&O 614 and her sister locomotives are the fastest steam locomotives in North America. They have a top speed of 125 miles per hour. That’s almost as fast as Mallard and very, very, very, very fast for non-streamlined steam locomotives.
@mspenrice6 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the proper way to race them be to set both of them to auto drive, with a speed limit set to 150+ mph so they're not artificially shackled? Also as per the other video, "how do I make this go faster?" ... reduce the cutoff. That's what the walshirtz valve gear has been installed for after all. Go for maximum expansive working, and reduce the amount of drag produced in the cylinder by having to exhaust loads more steam than it can actually use.

The Mallard is overrated. It only did 126mph because it was going down hill and it was pulling passenger cars with passengers on board. The extra weight allowed more momentum and boosted it to reach 126mph. The Mallard isn't powerful enough to reach speeds greater than 90mph under it's own power on level track. It doesn't produce enough boiler pressure or power to hold those speeds. The Daylight could reach 110mph+ easily, as it was designed specifically for speed. And it has the power to do so, and the bigger boiler and pistons allow it to produce more power and pressure, thus being able to get to speeds in excess of 100mph without any trouble. If the Daylight ran downhill like the Mallard did, the Daylight would place a new world record for fastest steam engine without a doubt. What annoys me is that people ignore the fact that the Mallard's real top speed on level track is only 90mph, while the Daylight's maximum speed on level track is 110mph. Even if Lazer Jet didn't restrict the Mallard to 70mph, the Daylight still would've won the race by miles. The Mallard literally only reached 126mph because it was going downhill when it did. I bet the Daylight could go over 140mph if it did the same thing the Mallard did to set the record, which was go downhill. The Mallard isn't the world's fastest loco, it only set the record because it went down a hill. Also take note that the Mallard broke down when it set the record, which means it wasn't even meant to go over even 100mph. The Daylight on the other hand, was designed to travel at speeds of up to 110mph. And don't you dare tell me the Mallard was designed for speeds of over 120mph, because that's not true. It's maximum speed, like stated above, was only 90mph, and that it ONLY set the record because it simply went downhill. On level track, with no hills to boost the Mallard, it would lose to the Daylight by a mile. Sorry, but American steamers can easily whoop British steamers any day they want. You can even do the research yourself. The Mallard is an LNER Class A4 type locomotive, and all of their top speeds were only 90mph, even the Mallard's. The Daylight's is 110. The Mallard only reached 126 because it was going down a hill and it had passenger cars to boost it even more. The Daylight would dominate the Mallard in any race. So for those who say the Mallard is faster than the Daylight, you need a reality check. The Mallard only reached that speed because it went down a hill while being boosted with extra weight for added momentum, thus allowing for more speed. And once again, the Mallard wasn't designed to go past even 100mph, because remember, the Mallard suffered severe damage when it set that record. 126mph is not the Mallard's real top speed.

For shits a giggles, if they REALLY wanted to, and if funding permitted, the Daylight could do 110mph with the right crew and load, just like her sister 4448. While their acceleration rate sucks, they can still do it. Also, if there's EVER a Milwaukee Road Hiawatha A or even F7 class, race them against Scotsman AND Mallard. The Hiawatha's were literally LNER's overseas competitors for speed since they ran regularly at 100mph.

A little bit of info for you: The engines name is not Daylight, but rather the name of the train the engine pulled. Unlike the UK the US very rarely named any of its engines. The GS-4 (the class of the engine) had a top speed of roughly 100 mph. These are not the fastest American steam engines though, as other engines such as the Milwaukee Road class A (120mph), the Pennsylvania Railroad T1 (140, unconfirmed) and the Norfolk and Western Class J (150mph! also unconfirmed, but theoretically possible) are as fast or faster. All these locomotives have full streamlining similar to the Mallard. The GS-4 class was only semi-streamlined. The GS-4 class primarily operated along the California coast, and were met with brutal grades along the southern portion of the route. As such the GS-4 was designed around tractive effort and horsepower above speed in order to make it over such steep hills. Even then they quite often required helper engines to help push them up the grades.
@Jiskpirate7 жыл бұрын
The A4 Pacific, mallard in particular, is to me the fastest engine ever, and there is proof. These theoretically possible or unconfirmed speed records are just a dream in my opinion.
