The Big Boys may be the most powerful steam engines still in existence, but the Big Boys are not the most powerful steam engine ever made. The Norfolk and Western Y6B Mallet were the most powerful, beating out Big Boy by a fair margin. Sadly though, no Y6B’s made it into preservation.
@backofthecountervinyl52955 жыл бұрын
Once again not true
@rucarnuts135 жыл бұрын
Seb Sheehan - You’ve said that. Problem is, that any research I’ve done on the Z-Class steam locomotives have yielded that they only ever had a tractive effort of under 100,000 lbs. So, prove me wrong. The N&W Y6B’s, operating in simple expansion mode, had a tractive effort of 170,000 lbs.
@backofthecountervinyl52955 жыл бұрын
Ah but that is only reserve when pulling it's max gross weight that is the power it then doesn't feed through a prop shaft to the coach / tender. However without pulling any weight it is one of the most powerful trains
@rucarnuts135 жыл бұрын
Seb Sheehan - I don’t deal in reserves. I deal in pulling power at the coupler. Tractive effort is the main statistic that determines power. How much tonnage can it pull at it’s coupler in the real world, as it were. In terms of horsepower, technically the Pennsylvania Q2 was the most powerful steam locomotive ever built at 8,000 horsepower. But power vastly overcame their tractive effort, resulting in them not even being considered for the most powerful steam locomotive by many. And as far as tractive effort is concerned, the unit of measurement nearly every railwayman uses to determine pulling power, the Norfolk and Western’s Y6B were the most powerful at 170,000 lbs.

@Ghostwalker20615 жыл бұрын
There is a debate between whether or not the Big Boys were the strongest, but they are in fact the heaviest of all steam engines. If you could do a strength competition between Norfolk and Western's Y6B 2-8-8-2 Chesapeake locomotives, the Chesapeake and Ohio 2-6-6-6 Allegheny locomotives, and the Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boys...you'll see a difference in strength power. I think the tractive effort of the Chesapeake is much greater than the Allegheny and the Big Boy.
@retrokingranch5 жыл бұрын
But the Big Boy's main point was to haul heavy freight trains at HIGH speeds. The Big Boy is literally the only articulated locomotive who's top speed was 80mph. All the others (Alleghenies, DM&IR, SP AC9's, Y6 Class, etc) topped out at less than 55mph.
@Ghostwalker20615 жыл бұрын
@@retrokingranch That is true. 80 miles pulling 5 miles of freight...just huge. And now we need 4 different diesels to pull that much that the 4000 series can pull with one engine.
@retrokingranch5 жыл бұрын
@@Ghostwalker2061 Yup. There is still no diesel locomotive that has more horsepower than a Big Boy except for only one and it's the largest one ever built, the Centennial (EMD DDA40X). Big Boy does 6,290 horsepower, and the DDA40X did 6,600. But the DDA40X didn't have more horsepower than the strongest steam locomotive ever built, which was the PRR Q2. The Q2 did 7,900 horsepower.

The strongest (and actually successful locomotives) in the USA were the C&O Alleghenys and Virginian Blue Ridges. They could pull just a bit more than the UP Big Boy (originally named Wasatch.) unfortunately train simulator doesn’t have the C&O or Virginian giants in the game yet. Also one last note, all steam engines in America are referred to as ‘she’. I blame the person who gave the Wasatch classes the nickname that most call them nowadays.
@blackbirdgaming81476 жыл бұрын
James the Void Knight Incorrect. There were stronger locomotives such as the Q2 which beat the Alleghenies and Blue Ridges in horsepower and the Y6b which murdered all of them in raw tractive effort.
@James-Railyard6 жыл бұрын
Blackbird Gaming and yet, both of the locomotives you listed, neither were preserved at all and all were cut up. The two I listed were ones I knew still had survivors that could be or are being restored. If the Q2 or Y6B we’re that great, where are they?

James the Void Knight There actually is one Y6b left, the N&W 2156.
@blackbirdgaming81476 жыл бұрын
James the Void Knight Just because something was so great doesn’t mean it would be preserved. That’s a silly idea. Additionally, neither the Y6 or the Allegheny could be brought back to life. Both are far too big and don’t go fast enough for excursion service. In the case of the Allegheny specifically, there’s a reason Lima was sued over their weight and lost.

Fun fact, big boys firebox is as big as a garage, and the driving wheels are bigger than a full grown man.

Big Boy all the way. Do UP Challenger vs Evening Star next!

I think the 9f did a good job with her consist and the 4000 is way to powerful to be fair it would be better if it were two 2-10-0s racing against each other

You mean big boy is the king of Tug of war and pulling the most coal cars!

Hey Lazer jet, In a week its going to be my birthday. Also it would be pretty interesting if u chose the strongest steam engine in every country ( Only the ones that are available ) And put them side to side and do the same thing with this. - GamerZoo Playz

Actually, the big boy is not the strongest American Steam Locomotive. That title goes to the Norfolk and Western Y6B. Big boy is the biggest
@ScaniaVabis5806 жыл бұрын
Technically the 9f wasn't the strongest Locomotive in the uk in terms of tractive effort
@hamburgrailfan76206 жыл бұрын
Big Boy is the best for strength and speed combined for hauling long and fast war trains over Sherman Hill.

Big Boy was the one steam locomotive I was hoping to be a character on Thomas The Tank Engine, I know that Murdoch was based on the evening star so big boy is twice as big as Murdoch
@thecpmr62765 жыл бұрын
Nah. As cool as that'd be, he'd be too big for sodor. Maybe if in big adventures they portrayed America as MORE THAN THE WILD WEST then we'd see it, but...I don't see it happening.

The CPMR Well remember Sam the Virginia Steam train, his design is similar to Big Boy.
@thecpmr62765 жыл бұрын
Well, sorta. Sam is a large engine, but he isn't a big boy.

LaZeR jet can you upload the long high speed race map to workshop
@JonathanColemanTrains5 жыл бұрын
You should try and do a bracket of the steam engines, Diesel engines, and electric engines
@Machodave20204 жыл бұрын
Apparently American locos are strong as shit. Big Boy (Also known as is the ALCO 4000 Class 4-8-8-4) is the strongest throughout all of steam, but our engines are just strong in general.
