I think Flying Scotsman ended up going way faster due to having a larger firebox thanks to her 4-6-2 wheel arrangement, while Royal Scot only has a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement, thus having no trailing truck to support a large enough firebox to produce as much steam as Scotsman and other 4-6-2 Pacifics.

I'm not sure how correct this is. LMS royal scots were known to near/match the performance of the coronation class on expresses, which would require speeds near or possibly greater than 100 miles per hour, which was generally how fast A3s went in regular service.

you know the LMS made the first non stop run to glasgow. and average speed of the royal scot was 65mph. and it made it 4 days before flying scotsman. great video oliver my dear chap.
