We’ve seen it and done it all. Nothing stands out. Derail Valley is the most realistic out there for actually doing your own jobs and getting paid plus the realism is second to none! The next best is Railroader. It’s running your own railroad, building bridges to connect and expand and collect waybills and then run them to the interchanges along with repairing oiling your trains (that you buy) al well as fill them with water/coal. Everything is as per a real pioneering railway would be. Superb, both of them.

Railroader is the GOAT. If a map creator and more-extensive mod support are added, it has the potential to completely surpass Train Simulator and Trainz, especially if there’s an Island of Sodor map and a buttload of Thomas & Friends engines and rolling stock.

The trailer was literally just vertical slice. A year ago Ponderosa in the test demo was literally an oval layout. They,re still working on Colorado map and modeling a few more engines these past months. They haven't even talked about track laying or multiplayer yet. There's no way CoS is coming out next year

@@RiverPlayz2343 and if you paid any attention to the dev vlogs, you'd know just how much they are constantly going back and improving game mechanics (whistles), fixing stuff as they update their software (moving to the next version of Unreal Engine), how much detail and authenticity they're trying to cram into every model in the game (Ponderosa map), and still trying to keep it a game that's fun for the player (the amount of customizations you can do on equipment). All of that takes an amount of time hard to comprehend if you've never tried developing a video game in your spare time.

Just a comment regarding the video, maybe mention if any given title supports VR, I know Derail Valley does but no clue on the others. VR can be VERY immersive but unfortunately many devs don't want to port their train sims to it (You listening Dovetail?). Racing sim and also flight sims can do VR, why not train sims, it could be a game changer. Another VR supported train sim is "Rolling Line" (on Steam), it's a model railroad sim, quite good actually! 😁

Some good games on the list. If anyone likes Art of the Rail / Railroad Corporation 2 type games, another one to take a look at is the recently released Train World. You lay track yourself and try to optimize your rail network for the delivery of both passengers and freight. Maps are absolutely huge, up to about 200 km x 200 km. A good game for people who enjoyed, say, Transport Fever 2 but focused on trains over trucks/boats/planes and wanted more space on the map.

I am not sure I can buy another Train sim after playing Derail Valley, they just released a new huge patch that made it even better than it was, If you don't exceed it there is really no need for me to bother, the game is that good, there is little need for something new or different. I have railroaders on my wishlist but I really do not bother with Early Access titles unless they look like they they are currently the greatest Railroad sim out there...see above. :) Times of Progress seems interesting, I'll keep a look on that one

Railroader is worth every penny, Derail Valley is fun, addicting even, but saving money for licenses to unlock new vehicles and cargo types isn't the same as unlocking new sections of track to operate over. Railroader does most of what derail valley does (minus steam simulation and epic crashes), but adds another layer with managing all the moving parts of a railroad, and balancing finances. You can hire AI to do some of the work for you, but you have to pay every AI worker you hire a preset wage, its definitely worth getting if you like a more management based game.

@@awildjared1396 May I am wrong but I see the 2 as different genres, for what I have seen of Railroader. Derail Valley is a hardcore simulator. I mostly play in first person, turn every nob, flip every switch, push every button. The jobs tend to be more a game play mechanic to give the player direction and goals, so they are not just blindly driving a train. I also tend to play as realistically as possible, I take my time do everything as you would, without cutting corners. Railroaders, from what I have seen at least, is more a management game, not a simulator, though it does offer some first person views. Most of that game seems to be flying around watching your trains from the outside, and the main game play loop is not driving a train around a map, like Derail Valley, but managing trains to make money. It feels to me more like a transport fever, or Railroad Tycoon but you don't have to spend time creating the tracks, but more dealing with logistics. There is nothing like Derail Valley out there Trainz and Train Sim World are close in style but lack the full open world, and try to overwhelm the player with loads of DLC. Derail Valley also seems to release with fully implemented systems. It will add more, but I don't feel like taking a freight job will be better in 2 years time, so I feel a less of a need to wait for the improvements coming, as they try to release fully implemented systems and not betas, nor place holders. Railroaders, being more management focused seems like the type of game that will offer a much better experience if I wait for it to be done. There are other management games I can play that are finished to scratch that itch. I don't want to waist time playing a game without fully implemented systems, especially if it is not doing something nobody else is. Now I could be wrong in my assessments here, so I would listen to any corrections you have, but Railroaders is one I want to play, and will probably be great, but one that would be best to wait until finished.

@ Most of what you said said is indeed correct, the only thing I will add is that much like derail valley, there is an open world feel to Railroader, and you can manually operate locomotives like derail valley, the only major differences are you can’t manage the fire and water level, and there’s seats that you sit in

You forgot about TRAIN DRIVER 2 where you can go online and drive train or be rail manager. It has serwers in polish and english. You drive in chosen train where other drivers are real and rail managers too.

Yup. "Y" is closer to "Y" in "System" than to "E", but "shee" is close enough. Also, the title is a play on words, since "Szyna" means "rail track". That's why it's spelled "MaSzyna", and not just "Maszyna".

My favorite so far is derail valley it's a great game and with the recent update it is much better, but the only problem with it for me as i gone deeper in my career i started to have performance issues and fps drops but it's an amazing game, i totally recommend it

Thanks for the overview. Unfortunately there's not much of interest there. Was hoping for a good successor to Transport Fever 2 with a better economic system, a larger scale (bigger map, longer distances between industries and cities for example) and a bit more freedom in terms of construction.

@dol-idris derail valley has been around "out" for a while as well. Both games are in Early Access which means they haven't officially released. To include 1 and not the other seems like a strange choice. Railroads Online has yet to fully release as it's still in development. Could that not be considered "up and coming" ?

@@QuorkQTar From the studio 346 FAQ, "Century of Steam is focused on creating a 3ft American narrow gauge railroad sim with historical equipment built between 1869 and 1969." Too bad no highspeed electric or even diesel and only narrow gauge to boot. Wonder if they would consider making a diesel or electric version too. Not mentioned is if any in game objects can be user created i.e. make you own track, engines, railcars, buildings, etc.

@@martink8080 I'm following the game's development closely and I can tell you, citing the monthly dev vlogs as sources, that track laying actually is a core functionality of the game. Also diesel engines will definitely be in the game. I'm not sure if they only mentioned it or also showed one already, but they are definitely announced since they are a part of 3 ft gauge history of the steam era, too. You don't make own engines, but you can customise them to an astonishingly fine degree. In one dev vlog they calculated the number of unique combinations and the number cam out ridiculously high. Don't remember the exact number, but many orders of magnitude more than any train game will ever see in user numbers :D

@@QuorkQTar Thanks for the info. I watched one of their recent Q&A sessions and was impressed with the work so far. They mentioned that the Engine they use, Unreal Engine 5, doesn't lend itself very well to user mods, too bad. Having experienced things like Transport Fever 2, it's the mods that make it interesting and possible for everyone to make it their own experience, rather than someone else's idea of what would be fun. Speaking of TF2, do you know if CoS will have an unlimited (or almost) area to travel / work in or more like TF2, a small landscape that forces a very heavy distance compression with growing towns literally bumping into one another. Is DEM data used or is it more of a local landscaping process?

@@martink8080 they are premade maps in different sizes. I think they mentioned a ride across the map could still take an hour depending on how you lay your track (how you tackle gradients etc.). I really hope they decide to tackle mod support despite the technical difficulties. Most games in the railway sector have won TONS by having mods. I'm not sure what you mean about the landscape? But I'm pretty certain terraforming (cuts etc) is on the feature list.

Unfair, for steam you get all the good stuff. And for modern operation you have more routes and engines in train sim classic and train sim world than my country ever had, although my country has a bigger railway network and passenger flow than the entire US does. Worse than that is the fact that US train feels like the least engaging train experience I ever had with mostly long, flat, single rail network with very few services to see and yet it gets more love because in fact there is many developers that comes from the US.
