In the early 1970's, my best friend and I, we were around 12 or 13 years old, took the train from Hualamphong Station in BKK to Kanchanaburi for a day trip to visit the river. Our parents approved of our master plan since we both spoke Thai fluently and it wasn't so far. However, in our minds we wanted to go to 3 Pagoda Pass on the Burma border but the train didn't go that far. We arrived in Kanchanaburi and immediately went to the river...we saw the movie 'Bridge on the River Kwai' and tried to understand what we were seeing. We immediately went down to the river and found old railroad spikes buried in the sand in a small island in the middle of the river (at the time the river level was low). We collected quite a few and my friend still has his to this day. Unfortunately, we lost track of time while we were playing in the river and the train crossed the bridge to return to BKK. We ran after it and it departed before we could catch it. We ended up taking the bus to BKK and convincing the bus driver to take us for free since we spent all our money on the train ticket...two farang kids speaking fluent Thai was quite entertaining I guess...that was the last time I was there...great video and memories

Great video thanks. As you are ex-military I'd like to strongly recommend the Hellfire Pass Museum. It really tells the story of what Allied soldiers had to endure in building the railway. Although it is very sad and emotional it is also a beautiful and respectful place honouring fallen military personel. I hope you have time.

One of the things I love about living in Germany for so many years is seeing history in person, on the ground, and live. In Thailand, there is a lot of historical sites and events that will be nice to see. I have stuck to the normal touristy areas but look forward to doing trips like this one you two are making... In The PH it's pretty much the same...I've worked on projects there and have visited some of the main tourist areas (I.e. Cebu, Boracay, etc.)... Anyway... Thanks for sharing this trip and have a great day! It's a holiday in Dubai today (51 years as an independent country) so taking a bit of time to watch your video and reflect on what's to come... Cheers! 👍😎👍

Hi Joe and Gift 👋 Enjoying the content because we share many of the same likes, the travel, meeting and talking with people. I have to say though It's clearly not just a generational thing that we enjoy so much of same things. I believe it's more about ignorance and envy that people, haters, and trolls spew the toxicity they do. They hide behind a computer screen, never seeing daylight and leave their houses to go out and talk with neighbors. I was lucky enough one to live next door to one 😒 I would like to think that we could be friends, you, Chuck, James, and many others like you living the dream. Maybe someday meet with one another 😉 BTW Daz has a great sense of humor. Great guy to have around 🙂

Next time take a trip up to Hellfire Pass to experience what the native population, allied prisoners and Japanese army experienced to build this railway. Many died on all sides from disease and malnutrition. A person died for every railway sleeper laid to form that railroad. Hellfire pass is a small cutting in solid rock the rail line goes through, cut by hand with hammers and chisels. For people today it remains a demonstration of the futility and complete waste of any war. We have to be capable of better than that!

Hi Joe, gift and all. I have done that trip 3 times since being in Thailand. I loved the train ride, but obviously time and progress has removed much of the original surroundings that would've been there !!! As i remember much of the route is farming now and very little jungle remains !!! I thought you might of shown some footage of the original wooden structure that the track runs on, where it hugs the rocks. Did you go to the memorial gardens? They're beautifully kept and at the same time a very sad memory of the truth of it all !!!
