Train to Shoot With Both Eyes OPEN

I've always focused on the front sight (left eye dominate, right handed) even to this day. I never focused on the target and shoot with both eyes open with no problem.

How do you manage focus using rifle/long gun? Obviously handgun is easier, but I’m struggling with rifle/ar being left eye dominant and right handed.

I've had to go back to only using my dominant eye to improve accuracy, but this gives me a new method to try so I can get back to using both eyes. Thanks

Great video! I am right eye dominant I am sitting here with a ballpoint pen in hand. If I keep both eyes open 👀 and focus on the target, my sight (ballpoint pen) is out of focus but is lined up with the target. However if I shift my focus to the pen it is way off to the right of the target! If I close my non-dominant eye the pen/sight is back on target!

Thanks for the video. This has been the topic of many a discussions. Isn't it better to turn ones head slightly, and get the sight pic with the dominant eye ? instead of taping the eye pro. won't this create a training scar ? just a thought.... Appreciate the info and video.

Thank you for the feedback! Turning the head shouldn’t be necessary unless the target is out of view and forces you to turn your head. The eyes should lead and focus on the new target and the hips drive the body to meet up where the eyes are focusing. Taping the eye pro won’t create a training scar, but rather teach the eyes and brain to focus on the correct picture and ignore what isn’t needed.

Would this training work as well for a right handed person that needs to train the left eye to be dominant. Reason is I am right handed and always aimed with my right eye as a kid, into the army, and beyond. I developed an astigmatism in my right eye that was very slight. That was until years of working on a PC for hours in a poorly lit area to build PowerPoint lessons for ESL classes made it worse. Mask wearing currently is not helping with drying out the eye either, but there is some improvement. At best my vision in the right side is a little cloudy, or blurred, in the center, and at worst it's all blurred and clouded. So this is the situation that has lead me to search videos on shooting with both eyes, as my left eye is fine, and leads to the question on the training you talk about here.

Yes, you can use this method to develop the “muscle memory” and train the left eye to focus on the correct picture. I would go a step further and suggest you integrate a slight cant towards the left while shooting. This will bring your sights over to your left so you can keep your head straight and maintain good body posture and you will observe the sights at an angle kind of like the roof of a house. Could I put the tape over the dominant eye side, thus training it to be non-dominant? 🧐 i am rh and cross eyed dominant 😔

In theory, yes, but that seems like a lot of work. If you are cross eye dominant, you can slightly cant the firearm to bring the sights over to your dominant eye which will be more comfortable.
