In the video, BWI rail station was under reconstruction, it didn't reopen the renewed station until Winter of 2019 (a few months after this video was taken). I used to take MARC up to Baltimore for Conventions a long time ago, brought back some memories! I guess we're spoiled in Japan when it comes to trains!

I took four trips on the Penn Line in 2000 - all between Union Station and Baltimore Penn Station. The first time was a treat, as I had NEVER taken any train from Union Station other than WMATA subway (they have a station here as well); the reason why a lack of Union Station was because when I took AMTRAK, it was from or to New Carrolton Station (which is north of here). Both MARC and AMTRAK use the same platforms at Union Station; they are NOT "segregated" here, like they are at some stations (30th Street Station, for example).

Back in the time the Station was built the train stations were looked at as hotels and had the same amenities as hotels.
@PGHammer21A3 жыл бұрын
That was, in fact, why using Union Station in 2000 as a treat (for me) - while I had been there since the renovation, I used it for WMATA - not AMTRAK - which is the original reason for being FOR the station to be honest. I had been to B. Dalton (now Books-A-Million) on the upper level before to shop - but it IS different boarding a passsenger train - even a commuter train - compared to a subway - even at the same station. (Do the same at the New Carrolton station -for example.) It is ALSO why I hope to bring my mother to Union Station next year and show her around - she has never taken the train, yet she knows I have taken it many a time.

When I worked in DC, I rode the MARC Penn line every single day - walk to the front for the Quiet Car! MARC is about efficiency, not comfort LMAO! But you can eat and drink (liquor too) onboard.
@PGHammer21A3 жыл бұрын
Then you have never used the Bombardier bi-level coaches; yes, they HAVE been used as the frontmost (quiet car) on some trains. Lean back and relax; even take a nap!

Very nice video. Reminded me my trip from d c to Baltimore in July 2018. Senior fare at that time was about four dollars for Marc train.
@PGHammer21A3 жыл бұрын
When I took MARC, it was three dollars for students (same as senior rates) due to subsidization - I was a student at MWTC in eastern Baltimore city. That was in each direction - by itself, it made DC-Baltimore Penn Station a workable day trip. (One of my 2000 trips was, in fact, just that - I was headed back to MWTC via MARC on a Sunday - technically two days early (I wasn't due back until Tuesday) - but I had never been to Harborplace, and wanted to do the tourist bit there. Harborplace itself is a very short walk from Baltimore Penn Station, and is served by both MTA bus and MTA light rail. (Power Plant Live was still open, as was ESPNZone (I stopped at both) and even at UNO's Harborplace (my first stop, actually - the why was to have a deep dish pizza and an Electric Lemonade on the roof above the Frigate USS Constitution - THE best view in great weather - and this was a cloudless day.

Nice ride! I thought about taking the MARC on Saturday, but I decided to burn some Amtrak points and go business class. And maybe do a trip report on that. - Red

Before MARC had weekend and Holiday service, I took Amtrak to BWI Station on Christmas Day to BWI Airport to catch a flight to Denver, almost everything went well. I had to wait a little more than 3 hours after I checked in at BWI Marshall before my flight departed but it's better than missing it.

As you notice, the Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) doube-decker passenger cars are showing up more often - I saw then first that year (2000) on my Independence Week (actually, Independence Day itself) run to Baltimore Penn Station - because it was a Sunday, I actually got to play "tourist" - and part half the afternoon in the Inner Harbor. You can take either the 3 MTA bus or the Baltimore Light Rail from Penn Station to the Inner Harbor - and Harborplace. UNO America was the high point of my stop at Harborplace - and not just the pizza - though said pizza is quite good - I've had it at UNO Union Station as well. But Harborplace has the view of USS Constitution from its roof! Sunny weather, good pizza, and Electric Lemonade at your elbow!

There are two reasons for that - we have air travel that is unregulated, inexpensive, and quite decent for longer-distance travel (which Europe does not have). Europe has international travel that is the same distance that we call interstate travel - what we (and Canada) call intrastate or provincial travel via air is awful (the reviewers call it that - I have never traveled outside the US). On top opf that, in the pre-Amtrak days, passenger rail travel got savaged as being *for the wealthy* - and that sobriquet was further used against even Amtrak - despite it being neither. Finally, railways in Europe were heavily subsidized - and even initially, largely government-owned or operated (SNCF still is). Amtrak is Federally chartered, but is NOT Federally-owned (and never has been) however, due to that charter, there ARE several stipulations it is bound to (similar to the USPS).
