Brightline just opened the newest intercity train in the United States in Florida between Orlando and Miami. With speeds up to 125 miles per hour, there’s a chance that taking the train is faster than flying. And, in this video, we’ll put that to the test.
We’ll also consider other factors, too. Not only will we test the time, but we’ll also compare the overall comfort, the ability to actually get work done, the onboard service, and the price. Using these factors, we think you’ll be able to figure out which mode of transportation you’d prefer!
But, ultimately, can the speed of an airline overcome the comfort and pace of high-speed rail?

Something else that definitely would affect the time is checked bags. On the train you can just bring them onboard with you so there's no need to wait to get them back whereas at the airport significant delays in getting checked bags are common, and even if everything goes smoothly it'll likely add at least 10 minutes to your trip time.

At MCO, my bags always get to the belt before me. I fly southwest so that probably has a lot to do with it. You pick the bags up on the way out so it adds no more time than it would take to use the bathroom.

Even the very crowded trains from Switzerland to Italy were much less stressful than flying over the border! I didn't even mind the return trip when it was so crowded that people were sitting in the aisles! (I guess it depends where you are. The Swiss and Italians didn't mind overpacking the trains. If the car was rated to carry 120 passengers, I know there were over 200 people in the car! If traveling by train, I still strongly urge that people go to the bathroom before boarding the train. You never know how crowded it will be.

@@Ven100 LOL, "first class" on Trenitalia is just four basic economy seats in a private cabin with a door! Not all Euro lines are fitted out like the Orient Express. At least the seats are comfortable and can recline.

Another factor for more accurate comfort comparison is that the measured dimensions for Delta were in first class, but that was a free upgrade. So comparing actual cost, he should have measured the dimensions of Delta’s coach seats, no power outlets, and alcoholic beverages not included. Or, compare using the actual cost of first class rather than what they paid because you’re not going to have that same flight experience for the coach price.

Another thing that makes a difference, particularly with an intra-Florida journey, is weather. The train will still take 4:25 regardless but the flight could be delayed for hours by FL storms.

I've been an airline pilot for over 22 years and airplanes but I'm also a train nut. The Brightline was awesome! Trains are just so much less stress and more comfortable than airline travel even though they might take longer. Thanks for the great video and flying Delta!

Good comparison! It appears you departed Miami in the early morning when traffic would be at a minimum. To make it more equal, an afternoon departure from MIA to MCO would have revealed a longer trip due to traffic in MIA.

MIA is incredibly close to the city center though, traffic to MIA often isn’t that bad. It also has a MetroRail station, less than 20 minutes from downtown.

Most people who want to go to orlando, are not looking at ending up at the terminal C at MCO which is quiet a distance from Disney, Universal, or downtown.

Only time I've ever missed my flight was one time I was traveling between PHL and MSY on AA..I got off the highway close to my house to check to see if I had something in my carry on.. rather than turn around and go the way I came.. I decided to follow my GPS which took me on a dirt road.. I should have turned around immediately when I saw the dirt road but I was stupid and continued. I got stuck in the mud and had to call a tow truck. Luckily for me AA has a flat tire rule.. unfortunately the rule requires you take your original routing and connect in the same place.. so I ended up flying PHL-CLT-MSY with a 3.5 hour layover 🙄. There was a flight that was a very tight connection at CLT and I made it to the gate before they closed out the flight but they wouldn't let me because I had checked baggage even though I offered to pick it up the next day. I walked every inch of the airport and luckily the A gate expansion was brand new so I decided to check that out. Very nice. I also got to pop my Embraer cherry when I flew on an E175 from CLT to MSY.

No matter what the traffic is like on the road or in the airport, I always make it my main goal to be past the security gates with at least one hour and 10 minutes before the flight. Now when you're in Dallas, trying to make "The Mickey run" (DFW-MCO), it depends on the time of the year. I went in January and people were still packing in the planes. Anyone know why that route would have so many full flights? I thought most people have to put their kids back in school after Christmas break. When i visited Universal, it was in January. The parks were not even half full as I expected but the majority of the crowds flooded into the Harry Potter theme parks (Universal has two: Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade) and the lines for Hagrid's roller coaster was insane. And Jurassic Park was pretty hectic too. If your children's goal is to get their pics taken in the raptor pen, it's best to go in the morning before lunch.

Here in California, where we’re building the nation’s first high speed rail system, when anyone talks about how it’s only 80 minutes flying between LA and SF they fail to take into account total travel time, which is closer to four hours from downtown to downtown. High speed rail aims to make that same trip in under 3 hours, and is being engineered and built to achieve that.

It's also good to mention that you had to uber to the airport in MIA. As you mentioned, brightline offers free uber service to and from their stations for first class passengers and first come first serve shuttle service for smart class tickets. That price definitely factors in during busy times where ubers could cost 30-50 dollars.

@@NickP16 That 5 mile radius from Miami Central is pretty encompassing. I've used that radius to get me to/from South Beach many times. If the station was in the middle of nowhere, the 5 mile radius would be a problem. Not so much for the dense downtown area.

I am definitely team Brightline. 2 hours is the safe arrival time for flights. Another factor missed. Luggage. Medium size suit cases are carry on with Brightline,and even if you did check luggage. The time from arrival to luggage collection, really adds up on a flight. Been using bright line for cruises for a while now. Love it. Will try my first Orlando to Miami for a cruise this December.

The map shown at 0:52 is actually the Amtrak route, not the Brightline route. Brightline goes due east from Orlando to Cocoa. Amtrak's route goes via Sebring. A time & cost comparison between Amtrak vs. Brightline between Orlando & Miami would be of interest.

Nice comparison. I’m an AA pilot that commutes to Miami from orlando. The train is a nice second option for me. In a perfect day flying sounds great, but in the summer when the weather hits I’ve sat on the tarmac for 1-2hours at least for weather delays into either Miami or MCO. The train is a nice option you know will pretty much go regardless. My advantage is I can get through security a bit faster vs the average passenger. The train is now by plan b versus driving, I can sleep all the way home or to work!

I used to commute between Miami and Orlando and I wold have loved to have Brightline back then.. you caught MIA on a good day.. normally it's super crazy, plus the hassle of airports compared to train stations is a factor as well

Ive found that planes usally have a lot more delays and dont have free wifi. Train is cheaper, better + free wifi, u can walk aound, and not much longer for short distances. Train always wins for me!

Living in Omaha, our airport (Eppley) is only a “medium hub” as classified by the FAA, and I love the fact that I’ve never had to arrive more than an hour before my flight. I don’t check bags, however. I think the longest I’ve ever had to wait in security was like 30 minutes, and the average is like 5 minutes. And it’s consistently ranked as one of the cleanest in the country, in part because it’s just the right size with great workers!

I think the main problem is that there are limited regional rail services to connect to an that limits the practicality of long-distance rail. The US needs to work on its suburban networks

The bulk of traffic is from la to Victorville, which means people will still have to drive to Victorville. Way faster and more convenient to either drive or fly. Few other items in the event not covered by others. Yall landed North in MCO which saves some time compared to flying the downwind and landing South. Also, Florida is obviously very prone to afternoon and early evening thunderstorms resulting in mile in trail, ATC flow programs, and ATC ground stops (departure delays). And then for the destination whether it be MIA or MCO, thunderstorms over the field results in arrival delays or diversions.. all out of the control of the traveler. These are constraints not likely to be encountered on the Brightline. I'm manager of flight dispatch at a major U.S. carrier and often have to travel between MCO and FLL. I'll be giving the Brightline a shot! They even offer airline employees discounts! Great content as always and thank you for comparison!

I love the Brightline. Super convenient. Biggest drawback for me is that it’s NOT cheap. Trains are comfortable. They’re super clean and the staff are great. The main stations (Miami / Ft. Lauderdale / Palm Beach are huge and nice. The smaller stations are nice but not nearly as big as the 3 mains…well, I guess 4 mains now with Orlando. I live about 5-10 minutes from the relatively new Aventura stop so it’s convenient. I have yet to do the Orlando stretch but have gone to Palm Beach several times.

The train is only comparable here because they chose such a short trip. It’s so short that the train actually has average plane travel times (much longer trips of course). The plane was handicapped by the recommended “arrive two hours early”, and then they just sat there till everyone else had left, artificially wasting time, and they’re comparing the premium accommodation on the mostly empty train when they started, to the much smaller 737 AND complaining about cary on storage compared to an EMPTY TRAIN. Yes, the train is nicer to travel on size wise, but this is a SHORT trip….you think it’s great till you try to sit there for 72 hours to get to LA ….compared to 6 to fly.

I’d argue this is the sort of travel distance where using the train makes sense. There is certainly a distance where taking the plane makes more sense, despite the overheads.

IMO that you compare going through the terminus points for each mode AS WELL as the point A to point B travel for each mode, IMO makes this comparison so much better than what many others do - where they compare riding from point A to point B on a specific mode, to taking a flight AND going through the airport, which IMO is faulty.

Thanks for another cool vid. Will enjoy watching it! I hope Brightline can be converted to electric and operate at higher speeds in the future. Edit: That time difference was so little, the gap can clearly be cut by improving the old tracks. And as you say the train ride is just more comfortable and you can spend almost all the time on working or relaxing. Flights on these distances make zero sense when you have have a train service like this.

I doubt there is any plans to convert it to Electric... my reasoning is, they would have just done it from the get go with it being a new service. Would seem silly now to spend that kind of money (versus during startup I mean). Upgrading the existing FEC sections will take time, but suspect it will happen at some point.

It should get a conversion one day, at least a battery hybrid variant. The train could run bimodal with overhead + battery operation. My country just switched to a bimodal set on some stretches. Right now it's sadly electric + diesel electric generator, but the stadler trains can be converted to overhead electric + battery electric one day. But still, the train is better for the environmental impact. @@trainboy1979

West Palm Beach to Cocoa is currently limited to 90 MPH due to FRA certifications. By the end of next month it should be complete and speeds increase to 110 MPH.

The southern part of the line has to remove a lot of grade crossings to get the speeds above the 75mph they're limited to down there, Brightline is also the deadliest railroad in the US, entirely because of idiots trying to beat the train at grade crossings. A fully grade separated line would make it a candidate for conversion to HSR, which would require electrification. The Siemens charger locomotives can probably be geared for 140mph, but that's about the upper limit for diesel since the max power on their consists is 8000hp (2x 4000hp locomotives, normally one pulls the train the other generates power for the cars), you'd need double that at least for a 186mph HSR train.

I do feel however that if you account for all the possible delays and inconveniences that can be associated with flying the time factor could be about the same for the train and plane. Re: time at the airport. Regardless whether my flight is domestic or international, I show up a minimum 3 hours ahead. My thinking is, I would rather be the one waiting (and planespotting) rather than stressing whether I would miss my flight or not. That is my rule#1 of traveling. Rule#2 is not scheduling anything whatsoever the day of travel in case of trip delays/snafus. It makes life a lot more relaxed that way.

Very well done. Being a train person to begin with, I must disclose my inherent bias. Even if the cost was the same, which it was not since the plane cost $83 per person more, the train has so much more going for it. All in all, a pretty fair comparison and the train wins, hands down. I hope that Brightline has a great and profitable future.

Trains make more sense in Europe than in the US. Different distances and geography. Aa far as being profitable - they are never profitable. You need rail between the destinations, where the air is free.

As you said, the distance between cities is a huge factor. Airlines and vehicular traffic are both heavily subsidized by the government in the form of air traffic control, airports, and roads. The railroads have always been forced to provide and maintain their own right-of-way at their own expense, giving the other forms of transportation an unfair advantage Brightline is trying to leverage the situation where there are cities of sufficient size within reasonably close proximity of each other.@@CaliSteve169

The times were pretty close, but I think it is rare that traffic was in your favor. One traffic accident and that time would have been a LOT longer for the plane. Also, that the security line at the airport was unusually short. While the security line would not have made any time differences, it would add to the stress of the experience.

While delays in traffic and/or security would have added to the discomfort/stress level, that is what the recommended 2 hour early arrival time before departure is for. The overall time for the trip would not change (unless it was so bad that you ended up missing your flight entirely).

I get to a train station 10 minutes before departure, and the airport two hours before departure. So that buys the train a decent amount of time to take longer.

As you point out, there are "intangibles" to travel. I MUCH prefer train travel, it's just so much less stressful. My home airport is ABQ and 90 minutes before departure is good (since I normally travel carryon), but my husband has a service dog and that takes extra time at the ticket counter. So we have to arrive 2 hours early when he's also flying. We have good Amtrak service in ABQ, but train prices for a roomette are so expensive now. I used to travel to L.A. and back on the train. Now, if I can get a non-stop flight, that's a better choice. Makes me sad, as I love trains. I always enjoy your videos. See you in the sky - or boat - or train. But, hopefully, NOT on a bus...

The train by far is the best way to travel between Orlando and Miami. A train only has to come close to the total travel time of flying for it to be more than competitive. It's why studies in Europe have shown people are more willing to take a longer train ride over flying due to the added levels of comfort and less hassle vs flying. Brightline is still running at 90 MPH between West Palm Beach and Cocoa. After the FRA certifications are complete sometime in November, that will increase the speed allowed to 110 MPH. Having left so early in the morning for the airport, some slight time advantage was given to the plane as others have pointed out. A nice video overall.

Brightline is considering building in the Texas Triangle area for rail. Currently, Texas Central is planning high-speed rail from Houston to Dallas. They are partnering with Amtrack to help secure federal grants to start the project..

If you want to include potential traffic delays, you should begin and end each test at points equidistant from the terminals with about the same probability for delays due to traffic. I would also rule out running and fast walking as well. A nice stroll would account for people who don’t move as fast as you folks. 😉 Personally, I would choose the train. It appears to be a much more enjoyable and less stressful experience despite the difference of an hour. Having said that, it is a great video as always and entertaining to watch.

I thought about that too ... but in Orlando, they would have taken the same amount of time to get from anywhere to the combined airport / train station. If the two were in different places, travel time to each would be a factor, as it is, travel time to both is the same. In Miami, they did account for this, by choosing an end point downtown, away from the station and airport. I would also choose the train, if I ever found myself in a place where there was train service. My city only has one Amtrak train come through a day, and it doesn't go anywhere I would want to travel unless I wanted to do an 18 hour + ride each way. We NEED more and better trains in the USA!

I guess bright line has the advantage of showcasing their shiny bright seats - which looks nice! Don’t know if others already mentioned this, but maybe you could’ve added carbon emissions comparison per passenger mile. Train most likely comes out way ahead here, so even if trip took 40 min longer it had a much lower carbon footprint.

Great informative video as always. I wish you would have added the way most Floridians get to Miami and many tourists which is to DRIVE as a third comparison. At the current price point, Brightline even as nice as it is, will fail - notice the lack of ridership in your video - it is far more cost effective to drive either through the middle of Florida (Highway 27) that takes you through the amazing sugar cane and river of grass Everglades, or the Tollway road that takes you through some amazing Florida coastal communities. It is even faster than the other two options.

Brightline isn't trying to get everyone out of the car or plane onto the train. They're saying they can make a profit if they get only 10% of those travelers. Also note that he said his plane holds 160 people but there were 52 empty seats. So the plane was 1/3 empty but apparently Delta can still make a profit with a plane that's 1/3 empty. I'm assuming Brightline too can make a profit with trains that are 1/3 empty.

For domestic flights I'd say about 2 hours at most is what you need for check in, security, snacks etc. For International flights I'd give it about 4 to 5 hours at least! I don't think Google Maps takes into account pedestrian crossings either Suzanne, so hopefully that answers your question. That 40 min difference between train and plane is honestly kind of negligible if you are just travelling between Miami and Orlando. I'd definitely take a train though purely based on a cost/emissions/service perspective. I will come to the states and ride Brightline one day!

Train wins outright. The train only lost by 45 mins., was cheaper, (big importance in my book), and had a lot less hassle. I just wish Amtrak would extend the Heartland flyer north to Kansas City, Omaha, Sioux Falls, and Twin Cities. Then my home state of South Dakota would finally get some rail service. We are the only state of the lower 48 that has never has Amtrak.

My understanding is that Delta's flights to/from Miami and Orlando are intended to feed their inherited LATAM gateway rather than try and compete with AA or even Brightline point-to-point, and I suspect their fares between the two are priced so as to not reduce connecting capacity to/from South America.
