Actually straight-line winds, such as emit from a strong thunderstorm in the form of a gust front, can and have done a fine job of turning over empty freight cars in a similar fashion as this tornado did.

This crash has a lot to it. Despite several of the cars getting blown over, the hopper car stays coupled to the locomotive because of its safety coupler, even after it gets drug onto the ex-double-track-now-single-track bridge. Then the remainder of the train, with the lead truck on the tank car derailed and sparking, comes charging onto the bridge and crashes into the hanging hopper, which causes it to tumble off the bridge. Then everything starts jackknifing. I think this is more exciting than the CGI wrecks in the movies Hancock and Super 8, because this is the real thing. Concerning comments about why the tank did not burn or explode: I can't tell how many cars were between the locomotive and the tank car, but safety rules require at least five cars of "cover" if the tank contains flammable contents, and only one car of cover if it is empty. I don't think the tank car was punctured. It was probably an empty car being returned to the refinery, and may not have been flammable.

So on the next day, it warmed up to 70F with strange cloud and with extreme foggy before the tornado comes. I know the biggest tornado is on the centerville Rd Poplar Grove, IL . I work at Edwards Apple Orchard and Orchard lost everything. It was on Jan 7th, 2008.

As you can see the Tornado is not able to tip the engine which can weigh in at 200+ tons some even as high as 400 tons. The cars that it did tip were much lighter.

kell490 most likely empty...
@douglasskaalrud68659 жыл бұрын
kell490 The last locomotives that I know of that weighed 400 tons were articulated steam locomotives from the 1940's. Can you give an example of a current-day diesel that weighs 400 tons?
@leerilea17099 жыл бұрын
kell490 Tornadoes have been know to pick up engines, turn them completely around and set them right back down on the tracks
@douglasskaalrud68659 жыл бұрын
Why am I never around when cool shit like that happens?
@MadKiyos9 жыл бұрын
kell490 It appears the tornado hit more down the line and made a chain effect, perhaps the freight overturning couldn't best the weight of the engine. An EF-3 tornado could topple a train engine. Maybe not pick it up, but it could topple it if it was hit directly. A lot of it has to do with surface area, and a train engine has got plenty of that on either side.

Man, things can go SO wrong, SO fast, on the railroad! Most people have no clue about the dangers crews face every time they climb aboard. Scary!
@Mike-012348 жыл бұрын
I think the cars empty are around 40 tons looks like 1 or 2 cars were derailed which caused the one behind to de-rail then then the ones that were still on the rail kept pushing. The tornado was not able to de-rail the locomotive I don't think there has been any locomotive which got derailed or pushed over from a tornado.
@cdavid81398 жыл бұрын
Oh yes indeed there has. LOL
@mikebetts20468 жыл бұрын
I think most road-engines weigh around 350,000 pounds. Quite a bit heavier than the freight cars. I correctly guessed before watching that the engine would not get blown off.
@jjgravy8 жыл бұрын
+C David only 1. An SD40-2 was tipped over by a tornado some where in the mid west. Not sure what tornado was scaled at but at least an F5. Freight cars are a common victim to tornados and even high winds. Happens every day. Engines are very VERY rare.
@Mike-012348 жыл бұрын
jjgravy I would be interested if you had the story on the SD40-2 being tipped over at 368k lbs I wonder if it was moving at the time or stopped. I think that would make a difference stopped ones I doubt it would dip over.
@hamish22028 жыл бұрын
+jjgravy I doubt it every day but they are pretty heavy Frieght cars so it takes a tornado every day then not just a storm
@TheRealJRC11 жыл бұрын
It was very clear by the lack of spillage that those cars weren't loaded when they derailed. Empty train cars are light by railroad standards. I am not at all surprised that the tornado was able to push them over. Had they been loaded the outcome may have been much different.
