As a veterinary technician, and new subscriber to Kikopup, I am compelled to thank you so very much for helping people train their dogs to be less stressed and more trusting with medical treatments, whether at home or at the veterinary office. Attention fellow dog owners - this training could make the difference between being able to medicate your dog at home, or loosing the loving bond you have with your dogs just when they need you the most. This training will also help vet visits to be much more pleasant for dogs, owners, and the veterinary staff. Emily, please also let people know to not hesitate to communicate with their veterinary staff about how to work with their dog. Let them know if your dog doesn't like their paws touched, or if they are experiencing pain anywhere, or anything else that might help us treat your dog with kindness. Where I work we distract our patients with 'easy cheese' (or other treats), squeaky toys, gentle touching, and praise during simple procedures like vaccinating, trimming nails, and ear cleaning. I teach my own dogs to be comfortable with common exam procedures (opening their mouth, holding their paws, touching the insides of their ears, etc) so that they are not afraid of these things. Thank you again, Emily, for posting this very important training information.

For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕

Hi Emily! I am a long time subscriber. I've been watching you since 2008, when we got our beagle Indi. I taught her a lot of tricks over the years with your help (everyone's favourite being 'cross paws'!) She has recently passed and I just wanted to leave a comment and say I am so thankful for you and your videos over the years. I am so glad to see you are still posting videos. ♥ Take care!

Ran in to this video, after watching many of your training videos on YT. Thank you 🙏 so much for your superb, no-nonsense direct, practical and polite videos. Plan to work these exercises with the free ranging dogs in my locality. Thanks to Kiko and Splash for teaching us so many things over the years. I am terribly sorry to hear of your losses. My sincere condolences, Emily. Hugs from a brother from another mother, from far far away. Thank you, once again.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with you current and past dogs. You and your dogs have done so much for us. I think I've seen some of these recordings before, but I'm currently working with a foster that needs a lot of help with handling so the review is helpful. Thank you!

I'm so glad I found your channel when we got Loke as a puppy at the very start of 2009. 😊Sadly he had to cross the rainbow bridge in December last year, having just turned 13 years old in November. 💔

Thank you for this video. We had a dog that passed in 2021, she had chronic kidney disease and had to have subQ every day. We were lucky that our dog was very cooperative even without any training, so we could administer the subQ easily at home Will definitely be applying your dog handling tips for our current dogs, who are not as cooperative and are terrified of the vet :')

Very helpful, thank you, Emily. I had to sub-q my 18 yr old kitty. Warming the fluid helps as you pointed out. Really gave her relief. I include handling as part of Lesson One homework for most clients. Very good reminder to build up that trust and comfort level before it's ever needed. Sorry for your loss 😪. Hugs! God bless you, Emily🙏🙂💕🐕‍🦺✝️

Thank you so much Emily for sharing your experience with Splash when she was a pup/adolescent. I have an 11 month old female Labrador and while she is a lovely, happy dog most of the time, she is 'head shy' and fearful of the vet after some scary experiences and ear-infections. It's caused me so much sadness and stress to see her so heightened and anxious whenever we go to the vet clinic and i've felt at a loss with how to deal with this. This video really gave me hope. Thank you

I had Wisp at the vets just the other day for a toe problem and i knew I'd have trouble her letting the vet touch it. I can work with her at home and she lets me touch the toe but she wasn't going to generalise that trust to the vet. He was able to have a light touch as I got Wisp to give me a paw then just fed her the squeezy cheese but she would often pull the paw away still. Not really time to work on it in the vets office. I'm booking a McTimoney session with a lady that has done Sleet and Wren and she can learn to get accustomed with more time.... She is not aggressive/reactive at all and loves being fussed and petted but if people were to try and force her to have her feet examined, she'd panic and start to thrash about to try and get away. Obviously I am keen to avoid that.

That's actually a great training idea but I have a problem: I can do whatever I want with my dog. He doesn't necessarily like everything but he will let me do it. BUT he hates other people and I don't think our vet and her staff have the time to train it in such detail. We're already training like going in every week just sitting there and the vet and/or staff give him treats. And he's already a lot more relaxed (as long as he's not being treated). But I can't train the treatment itself.

My boy halo had a bad experience at the vet, and was terrified of them. I bought a cheap vet tech outfit online, and when I put it on in my house, he was terrified of that. It took him a month of me wearing it on and off to not be scared. I did the training and restraints in the outfit, and he got over his fears and even wags at vets cause they dress just like me. If its fear of strangers you can work on that. But if it is specifically vets, it can also be the location that scares your dog too. You could see if you can have a vet come to your house to do stuff. I know not all vets have time or will do what you want, so I really work on restraints too. You can also teach your dog to be comfortable in a muzzle being restrained by you, then you hold your dog and touch your dog, then when at the vet you can have your dog faced away so your dog things its you touching them. But making the handling procedures into games and repeating them enough, so they become very very reinforcing to the dog, thats when they start to affect the dogs behavior at the vet. So you can practice the stuff in the video, have people your dog trusts in your family that the dog is safe with practice, etc so the dog starts generalizing this weird intrusive behavior is something fun and means treats happen

So we've worked on handling exercises quite a bit, but anytime we actually go to the vet, the vet techs tend to rile my dog up with high pitched noises and attention and most of it goes out of the window. :( We've been working on overall lowering her excitement around people but if someone goes out of their way to rile her up there's only so much we can do. Any advice for how to practice for that kind of a situation?

Well, I know a lot of people think that it was a little extreme, but I bought a bunch of vet tech clothes and I wore them a lot around the house because my boy Halo had a bad experience and would go into panic mode at the vet. Seriously just wearing the vet tech clothes to train in and the last vet visit he was wagging and friendly with such minimal training becuase the person was dressed for a training session. Another thing is really putting your foot down. It’s really odd how sometimes the techs and vets always do the thing you wish they wouldn’t do. I swear when wish was scared of people coming near her face, I would tell the vets please do not go near her face, and the worst thing you could do would be to kiss her on the mouth, and can you believe it? Three times in a row they somehow got their face in her face and kiss her on the mouth. 😳 so I became more proactive with body blocking, and just putting my hand in a no signal in front of people, blocking their hands and movement. And now wish is great at the vet. Another thing is have people your dog likes where the vet tech outfits, and practice the silly, high-pitch voices, practice, crouching down, and reaching out with the back of the hand. I also suggest if you really have time, to go to the vets and just hang out outside, go in the vet and leave without anything happening.

@kikopup Wow, that's very thorough! It's sad that strangers give dogs so much trouble that this needs to be done to begin with. You'd think at least vet staff would be informed better. Time is one thing I have to spare so we'll try these out. Thank you!
