Is it possible to ask the dogs not to go to people or other dogs without permission? I am in a very unfriendly place. A lot of people are offended by dogs. I even received threats.

You can try keeping them in a larger pen for alone time so they can move around and make choices. Choose a time they are calmer to begin with. Also go drop a treat when the dog lays down in the house or in the or pen throughout the day before trying on leash.

People forget that if providing treats is positive reinforcement, then withholding treats is negative punishment. Yes, "force free" and "purely positive" training uses punishment according to behavioral science. That's why these things are MARKETING terms and not SCIENTIFIC ones.

I think it depends. I mean if you have a child and they have 3 meals a day, the time between the meals youre not using -p. And for it to be -p a behavior would have to reduce to call it that term. For me it’s all about expectations being broken that make it feel punishing or negative experience the learner. Like what if your child got a special treat between meals when they came in from school reliably then one day the parent just pretended to ignore them. This expectation being broken even though the child was full from lunch. I don’t think they’re that many people using food deprivation. But I am sure in this world there still are. I really hope not but that is how positive training began with zoo animals and aquariums starving animals so they had no choice but to do things for food. I feed my dogs half their daily food in the morning. Then train 1 hour later with treats so they aren’t hungry during training. But I think that bad timing and raising criteria too quickly can be just as damaging… creating dogs who literally look like they are suffering during the training. People are so focused on getting “the behavior” they want and not focused on the dog and what the dog wants and needs to be physically and emotionally healthy. After time the dogs end up having a stressed out emotional response to even being in a training situation or hearing the cues. I can’t understand why people can’t see the dogs behavior ?

Oh I am so happy I found this! Most advice is just 'put them in the crate' or 'whine loudly' or 'say no'. We got a super mouthy but super smart and cooperative pup and I knew if I just figure out how to deal with it she'll learn it in a heartbeat and I was right, this method helped so quickly. Until now it was getting worse by the day, she ripped through my jeans and I got quite a few bloody spots and this is before teething and despite her sleeping enough. So happy I found this video, it works well for my mouthy little Beauceron. ❤ She just was overexcited and had to learn a better way!

@kikopup
@kikopup 3 күн бұрын
It’s really hard to find a breeder who is honest about temperament and history of the lines, the best bet is spending time with the relatives of the dog being bred seeing what they are like in person asking if you can talk to people who owned prior puppies related to the puppies you are interested in. Make sure they are doing Health tests checking hips and elbows on X-rays and making sure there is no epilepsy in the lines. Epilepsy is common in border collies. I personally look for border collies with relatives who are not showing anxiety fear reactivity resource guarding and aggression which can be common especially in dogs bred for sport and winning prizes over temperament

Always excellent advice here! 👏🏻 I've been in a multi-dog household for many years now, no less than 3. Proactive management and setting up for success builds good habits and clear boundaries for sure. I recently adopted a cat into my 3-dog house, and just took my time with intros and freedom. I was slightly concerned about my youngest dog, a large intact male Shepherd, since he was the only one not raised around cats. Well, in no time, he and the cat bonded SO nicely, they're best pals and playmates now. Shepherd is so gentle with her too.

This is exactly how I have introduced all of my dogs - it just makes so much sense to be the teacher and not the chaperone! The only time I have found there to be issues is when personalities and experience are greatly mismatched. I had one dog who would not take any form of distance increasing signal from other dogs and would escalate immediately to physical altercations if growled at (for example). So, in the end he could not be around my other dogs for their own safety. But he & they were totally okay with that !

Yeah. My dog wish I had to teach her to back away create distance otherwise she would want to go strait to fight. Now probably the worst she would do is snap at a strange loose dog but before it was a lot of management adding dogs to my house especially tiny dogs. When I got my second dog, and we became a multidog household, I must have implemented a lot of your protocols because my two dogs knew them well. When I brought in other dogs (fosters and eventually a third dog), I was surprised when my large male dog started correcting others and kind of running the house. I quickly realized that the new dogs didn't have the interactions pasing through me first, and I became a lot more conscious about training things that teach a dog appropriate turn taking: waiting for the treat to come to you, not eating dropped food, waiting for your turn to go out the door or exit a kennel, waiting for your turn to play with a toy. It all really helps my male dog relax. Thank you for teaching me how to do that. ❤

Awe that’s so awesome. And there’s nothing wrong with a dog saying no to another dog, but if it kept happening all the time- it’s time to step in and teach the one dog not to ignore the other dogs needs or teach a dog bulling or guarding not to worry and share etc

@kikopup It felt more like my male was saying, "Hey, that's not how things work around here." Like he was being my Sherrif. Once I would teach the new dogs "manners," all disputes went away, so I definitely think it was my fault for creating a space that didn't have clarity on what's expected.

This does make so much sense. The food clip really sold it. In terms of playing together, I imagine they kind of work out their play style on their own, with us monitoring energy level and interrupting inappropriate play. Does that sound kind of right?
@kikopup
@kikopup 3 күн бұрын
Yes. I think some dogs are naturals at matching their play partner like my dogs bliss and others they need help to learn- you can just recall as you see something you think is worrisome begin then take a break and try again. There are some dogs that play with other dogs like the other dog is a toy rather than reading them and taking turns, without guidance.

Hi Emily, What wonderful and important insights. I meet alot of people at this huge park and my Service Dog would Never run up on their dog. However I'm always hearing from these dog owners and their dog is on a leash the instantly pick up their little dog and say oh my dog doesn't like it when other dogs are around me she's so jealous she'll probably bite your dog. That's just one example there are a hundred I could give you and I always say to them how do you know that how do you know that your dog wouldn't like my dog I mean if you put your dog down and it does not attack my dog and try to kill it well maybe the in 5 minutes they might have some fun together and I've done that and a couple of people have taken me up on it and then our dogs are now playing running around the baseball field and they'll say I cannot believe my dog is doing this. The reason I bring this up is that you know people train their dogs to be jealous and afraid or guard them or whatever I mean it's so obvious that they are the ones that have made their dog do that. Thank you for this video and showing a right way to introducing dogs together.Emily I'm looking for somebody to help me work with my service dog in training he does a lot of cool things but I have done a lot of not so cool things not knowing better if you know anybody who's a service dog trainer that will work with me VIRTUALLY Please let me know. Again thanks for a great video

I suggest instead of trying to figure out what the dogs, motivations and feelings are like human jealousy or what not I would think in terms of the dog is feeling uncomfortable and dislikes how it’s being approached. Your dog might approach people in a very calm, caring manner, looking away, arcing around stopping and letting the other dog approach to them, but no doubt these dogs have had the experience of some owner, letting their loose dog charge their dog, at first their dog, probably threw out a lot of warning signs. Please leave me alone, but the dog kept running at them so after this happens multiple times dogs try harder to say no and they are not listened to by the other dogs. People think their dog running over to a little dog is a friendly dog, but it’s extremely rude and scary. It’s the same as if you were walking down an alley and some man just ran straight at you and then started touching you or touching your partner. To be a help to people with dogs that do not trust other dogs running at them, you can stop from a distance of 30 or 20 feet hold your dog and let the other person‘s dog approach yours instead of vice versa, where they are the sitting duck being rushed up on. That way the dog has a choice about the interaction and can choose to approach or not. For me it has to do with a lack of choice feeling trapped and not trusting the strange dogs intentions. If a dog comes at me running or trotting offering no signs of friendliness by blocking looking away, stopping and inviting, I pick my little dogs up and prevent them having a negative experience with a dog who is a bully. I will let them interact with dogs who read them and slow down and invite them in conversation or play. By doing this- preventing them as much as I can from having an experience with a dog who wants a one sided relationship and is not reading or listening to them my little dogs trust I’ll help them and don’t react and are friendly and play with social dogs. If you watch a little dog bark at a dog approaching and the dog doesn’t immediately stop slow down arc and create distance and let the little dogs approach them they are not listening to the dog at all and just thinking about what THEY want to do. Some dogs can also have genetic tendency to guard and they feel more uncomfortable with a person or dog coming and messing with their owner or their own body, and they need to be respected and the training approach to be slower than just hoping they habituate to dogs and people doing things to them that makes them uncomfortable. I have a protocol for resource guarding here - dogmantics.com/resource-guarding-protocol/

@@kikopuphi Emily. I want to say that I cannot believe how much thought and how much energy you took to write the reply you did to me. I feel kind of bad about that because I wasn't I guess explaining what I was trying to say very well and all I meant by it was that when I meet people they have all these notions about how their dog is aggressive or will bite my dog but just looking at the dog I can see the dog has none of that aggression at all it's the owner that just kind of talk themselves into feeling that their dog because when he plays he makes a growling noise they say he's aggressive. An example I can give my help the other day in a big baseball field there was a guy with his girlfriend and they just got a new dog from the pound and their other dog was with them well this is a park where everyone lets their dog off leash nobody owns any part of the park it's a public place so my dog ran into the field. The guy yelled at me and said get your effing dog out of here this is a new dog and he's very aggressive and he'll probably end up really harming your animal.and I said well don't worry about that I don't see any signs of your dog right now having any uncomfortable feelings or anything so I'm okay with it and he said well you know what I'm not. I said okay well his dog started running with my dog I told my dog to get out of the field and it started trotting away and his dog started running after my dog in a very playful way and they started running together wrestling together and just having a really grand old time. But the guy said come here to his dog he put a leash on his dog and said I don't want my dog playing with your dog and he's not playing he's aggressive I was shocked about how this guy could call his dog aggressive when they both were just having so much fun together that was really my only point Emily that I don't train anymore I'm totally disabled chronically ill on really dealing with very bad complex PTSD I wasn't trying to make a training point or anything I was really trying to make a more social point about how people will tell you what their dogs all about when you can clearly see that they made them that way.I've also seen people when their dogs are aggressive go up to their dog and say it's okay baby you're okay don't don't worry so the dog got rewarded for being aggressive and trying to bite my dog. That's another thing I see probably more than anything really bad behavior to my dog and then they'll take their dog and cuddle it and make it you know all baby baby it's okay I mean to me that's rewarding really harmful behavior but anyways the main thing is thank you so much you put so much heart into your reply to me and I felt really bad because I wasn't trying to look at it like how to do it right you know how to do it right . I enjoyed the video because it shows that you can have a multi dog home and there's a right way and there's not such a right way and that's that but I'm sorry if I did not explain myself well thank you for everything again it was very very thorough and very loving to write that reply to me.

Do you have any suggestions for barking while playing? My border collie pup is very vocal. I don't mind it sometimes, I know it's a part of the drive... but I feel bad not letting him play with any other dogs because the barking is very high pitched and loud! He cannot play inside or around any neighborhoods because it is constant barking with any and every dog or cat. He only does this barking as like a demand when frustrated, and when excited playing.

I don't know how to teach my dog how to walk slowly because he is very tall, and his speedometer seems more related to his mood than what he's trying to accomplish. So when I try to teach him, he gets lots of treats when he feels tired, but as soon as he has some energy and enthusiasm, he can't seem to succeed. Also when he's physically tired enough that it actually slows him down, training is the last thing he wants to do, so I think that's part of why he can't understand that it's the speed that he's being rewarded for, he's not really learning, he's too sleepy, he's just tuckered out and going with the flow. He can understand a position a little better, like he can stay in a strict heel position no matter how much energy he has, but as soon as he doesn't have to stay in that position, like I tell him to go sniff the bushes or something, he just starts running, hits the end of the leash, jumps towards me because we practiced leash pressure games, jumps back towards the bushes, and it repeats until he looks really frustrated. Do you have any tips for teaching dogs to move slow towards something they want even though they're feeling energetic? Edit: just found the "moving settle" video you did, never mind!!

So what if my puppy never lays down unless she’s chewing on a toy? Do I reward that as being in a relaxed state? She only naps during enforced crate time which she is okay with so long as somebody is near.

Sometimes when using a crate it can create a puppy that doesnt settle when loose in the house. I suggest keeping puppies in pens during alone time so they learn to play and nap. you can sit next to the pen if they are worried about being alone at first. dogmantics.com/product/kikopups-guide-to-puppy-training/ my puppy training video for sale on my website goes into detail about the benefits of having a puppy loose in one room and teaching them what to do rather than too much pen or crate time. @@kikopup thank you for the thoughtful response! She gets the vast majority of her free time in a large playpen (it's most of our family room and connects to our sofa with us). We pop in and out but mostly there's a human nearby and supervising when she's there. Naps are in a plastic crate in a dark bedroom and are always enforced by us after an hour or two of awake time. She laid down independently in a relaxed state in the playpen area for the first time yesterday at 12 weeks old! We're trying to transition to a wire crate in the family room so we can feel better about leaving her alone, and she goes in and out of it happily, but mostly to play and not to settle. We practice "down" and "wait" and opening/closing the door there, but haven't worked up to walking away yet.

I'm going to take a therapy dog class with my dog in a few weeks!! I think it's time to teach him not to duck when people go to pet him, that sounds very un theraputic lol. I think part of the reason he hates it is because the hand moves fast right in front if his eyes, so he can't see the person, look at their face, and make the decision to trust them and be affectionate. Whenever he really takes a shine to somebody, it starts with him looking up at their faces adoringly while they coo over him, and then he goes in for full body snuggles, mashing his fluffy neck into them so at least if he can't take them home, he can smell like them later 😂
