THANK YOU for knowing the difference b/w a pace and a correct 1-2-3-4 beat gait. As a trainer, I am constantly having to reeducate people that their pacing horse is NOT gaiting.... This is refreshing... to know someone else out there sees this and knows it and knows it needs to be fixed by taking time to break up the pace... Working them uphill helps a lot too as they must break up footfalls to get up the hill...

I enjoyed this. Thank you and your dog does a lovely gait as well.

fantastic. I love the way you break it down and make it so visually obvious and without the slow mo it is very hard to catch.

Thank you Ivy. Question, when you first start out, how long do you work with him each session, going over the poles? 15-20 minutes? And do you do this every day of the week? Thank you.

A single joint snaffle bit is not a gentle bit. It can work like a nutcracker on the jaws or snap up and hit the horse in the palate especially if the palate is low. i always use a dog bone snaffle bit.
@IvyS8 жыл бұрын
yep, I usually advocate a snaffle with me than one joint. I really like the Gary Lane freedom snaffle.
@EllenDawn1008 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear it. When people hear "snaffle" they tend to think of the old single joint style.
@EllenDawn1007 жыл бұрын
I used to retrain people's "bad ponies." Ponies have low palates and what do people usually use in their mouths for kids to yank on? Single joint snaffle bits. It's hard to find anything else in their size. I ordered a French dog bone snaffle for my mini and it took a lot of time to find one.

Be a lot better to trim or shoe them in a way to encourage it to rack. I can see that this horse needs it’s front hooves stood up and a toe weighted shoe would help too

I have a Rocky Mountain/ Tennessee walker. She’s Pacey, but when she’s in a slow gate, I almost feel like we are swaying Susie to side, what is that gait

Stepping pace.

You say to raise the reins when he starts to trot. What do you do with the reins if he goes into a pace? Lower?

At one point in this video, you mention the horse is getting a little trotty. Is there anything wrong with pushing a gaited horse out of his gait and let him or make him trot sometimes?
@IvyS10 жыл бұрын
John, a lot of people ask this question. I would say, that for the horse that gaits really well, this is a fine thing to do, just make sure your cue for trotting is very specific. You do not want the horse to start trotting when you want him to gait. :) But having a gaited horse trot, especially one that leans toward the lateral or pace, can be very good for them.

There is if it hurts your body. Any way letting them trot makes them more trotty. Muscle memory.
@jeanettewaverly25907 жыл бұрын
I imagine you and your horse could develop your own, personal, cue for picking up the trot.
@jeanettewaverly25907 жыл бұрын
If a horse tends to be too trotty, this would be an issue. If a horse has a "pacing problem," I'd thank them for opting to trot occasionally!

What does the poles do to break up the pace? Do you need just one set of poles of set of 3 to 4 poles spaced out?
@IvyS5 жыл бұрын
Take a look at this article I wrote. ivyshorses.com/2018/02/10/how-to-use-ground-poles-to-get-a-smooth-gait/
@IvyS5 жыл бұрын
Basically, it makes the horse pick their feet up, instead of just lazily swinging them along the ground, as happens in the pace. This makes them change what they are doing.

Will being gaited affect how fast they run?
@EllenDawn1007 жыл бұрын
I've had some very fast gaited horses but preferred to let them speed rack as too much cantering can cause them to lose gait.
