Reading & Northern 425 is one of, if not, the most impressive steam locomotive one can see in the Northeastern United States. The high-stepping pacific is well known amongst train-enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The 93 year old locomotive is analogous with her deafening stack talk, stylish blue paint scheme, and rotating whistles. In August and September of 2020, her stack talk and whistle echoed throughout the Lehigh Gorge State park, a hotspot for hikers, bikers, and railfans. Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, the Reading & Northern returned steam-powered trains to their rails, running 70-minute trips into the gorge. The breathtaking locomotive was the star of the show, filling the skies with smoke, and reaching speeds of 30 miles per hour. Join us, as the loudest locomotive in the United States hauls an eleven-car train through the gorge. In this video, 425 has a Reading 6 Chime, Baltimore & Ohio "Tumor Top" 3 Chime, and Southern Railway Ps-4 Whistle.
Reading & Northern #425 is a 4-6-2 Pacific Type Steam Locomotive Built by the Baldwin Locomotive works in 1928 for the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad. She is the first of two G-1 Type locomotives for the GM&N (425 and later scrapped 426). When the locomotives went to the GM&O, they became 580 (425), and 582 (426). 425 traveled to many other railroads, such as the Louisiana & Eastern, Valley Forge Scenic Railway, Wilmington & Western, and the Blue Mountain & Reading where she ran alongside 2102. Now, the BM&R is the RBM&N, or R&N for short, which acquired many miles of track when Conrail went out of business. In 1992, 425 was painted in her famous Blue Paint Scheme in honor of the Reading Bluebird. From 1996 to 2007 the famous locomotive sat dormant. In 2008, she returned to regular passenger service. In 2011 425 was given roller bearings by the Strasburg Railroad, and in 2015, painted to her current blue, a GM&N "Road of Service" inspired paint scheme, forming into the Pennsylvania resident we know today.
