We've taught the cat to sit, stay, beg, leave it, get up, get down, High Five (both paws touch one hand), roll over, and my latest triumph, Patty Cake (each paw touches each hand). He is very food motivated and we've found a treat he really loves. His sister can do a number of these tricks but she is not so food motivated and when her favorite treats were no longer manufactured, she won't participate. We also have specific whistles which mean, "Birds/squirrels at the back deck" and a separate whistle for "Birds/squirrels at the front window." I wish I could get them to fetch but I haven't found an association with the concept yet.

It's so obvious how good you are with training animals. I've trained my dogs before, and my boxer puppy quickly learned a lot of tricks and he was so obedient. My shiba inu (who was a shelter pup and had been abused) will only sit for me, otherwise he gets spooked and runs away. I would really like to see how to train animals of different temperaments.

My dog learned to open doors. Basically, when he was a puppy and did something bad, my mom would put him in pretty much "time out" for 10 minutes or so. After a jumping at the door trying to open it, he eventually clung on to the door handle, and it opened. Since then, he pretty much learned how door handles work. So we decided to use that to our advantage - you've got no idea how many times I would've been locked out if it hadn't been for him. On the other hand, my aunt tried to teach him to sit and "shake hands" with food, and... uhh... now he sits next to me and puts his hand on top of my leg whenever I'm eating dinner.

I took a behaviour modification course in my undergrad psychology program. It was fascinating but also kind of disturbing to realize how many of the thing we think we're freely choosing to do are things we've actually been trained (not always intentionally) to do.

I was wondering where the clip at the end was going until i started laughing at the cat just chilling head-first in the box at the same time as we hear the little laugh at the end of the clip and realized that is exactly why it was there

Hi! I'm not sure how I became a subscriber and I'm not going to bother to search for a logical explanation. I need to say, however, that I adore your energy and seeing you have such a pure passion for animals gives me a strange feeling of peace of mind. What do you think - would it be possible in the future that all humans, even inhabitants of big cities, live alongside domestic animals? Can the disconnectedness between us and the other species be overcome? If yes, then by what means? Such project of global cohabitation would benefit both sides. I believe that if we name ourselves the hegemonic species of Earth, we should act like it. More people need to inspire a behavior of solidarity between all of the inhabitants of our planet.

I don't know how to make gifs but I keep repeating 4:47-5:10. I hope someone could make it with captions of Jessi's commands and praises! Loved that part so much! :) I think his fur or his continuous wagging of tail and the amazing tricks makes me want to watch it over and over! I wonder, Is Jessi also doing hand gestures? I heard you can also train pets to respond to hand gestures and body language.

I know you can use topical potassium iodide liquid if you catch it at the VERY early stages, but when it develops bad enough to break the skin you have to go to the vet and get an anti-fungal topical creams and maybe antibiotics. Sorry. Poor cat. And you have to be very careful, as people can get it too.

My black cat Mary does the same thing. Her back end will stick out of the box for a while until she can figure out how to get it inside with her front end. The size of the box doesn't seem to make a difference. LoL

I think chinchilla's are the softest because of how dense their fur is, a rabbit is a rodent, and Shroningers is I think how you s spell the cat in as box thing? Those are my best guesses. Edit: Oh, I thought she meant like the saying of a cat in a box that you don't know if it's alive or not.

Not sure this would ever be a topic that you would want to discuss, but I was wondering if you had tips on grieving for a pet loss. I know one can never truly prepare themselves for the death of loved one, but I'm still wondering if there are things you can do to be better ready. DOes that make sense? I've only ever lost a hamster and that was terrible. My first dog is twelve and I've just become so aware of how she's aged. The thought of her dying or having to euthanize her is… Ughhh. Anyways, if you ever thought about maybe discussing losing pets and euthanization, that would be a great topic.

Sorry to complain again.. Did something happened while doing the cutting of the footage? Every time there is cut - there is also a noise. Nothing serious.. I just wonder if something went wrong/is broken? Btw.. I'm taking care of an older dog - how has so bad habits etc. - and even thou he is pretty easy and lay back.. Keeping training up is really difficult. He got really stubborn after the owners left. I'm usually the one who handles him best - but have to be honest.. It's getting hard to do alone and I feel like that now when I'm only person of his pack for awhile he try to take over with new found stubbornness. There isn't kind of any moment you can be mentally or energy wise weaker because he will make it a sign of weakness - and starts pretty much unsure guard dog behavior. What I could handle before so it was mild - now I'm just thinking again that Who would ever take a dog alone? It's really hard work!

The noise is the clicker which is another form of positive reinforcement. I used this for an iguana at college to teach target training! just google clicker training if you want to learn more :)

I think the end of this video led to a question that I've always wondered: why do cats love boxes?
@straightuptrash59427 жыл бұрын
Jill H. I may not be animal wonders, but I can answer this! Cats natural environment is the forest, and their natural behavior is to hide and sneak around. Boxes have both of these aspects. Boxes are made of paper which comes from trees, boxes also are a good hiding place. So that's why they love them so much!

Works in exactly the same way! Kid does something good, gets rewarded with praise, cuddles, chocolate, friends, games etc. Kid does something bad it gets nothing, or punished. Good behaviours encouraged in the hope they'll be repeated when we want them to, bad behaviours are discouraged to stop them happening again. Issue with kids is that most parents struggle with being consistent compared to with their animals!
@evercuriousmichelle10 жыл бұрын
Sammi Palmer Excellent. And it's important to note that for many kids, any attention, even negative attention (yelling, lecturing, angry faces) are still considered rewarding. So often ignoring and a strong positive reinforcement plan work better than lecturing your child each time they do something wrong. I recommend reading books on The Kazdin Method.
@banndsand10 жыл бұрын
It is also good to keep in mind that the consistency of a reward or punishment can greatly affect the action that brought it on. Bad behaviors (ex: whining for candy in the grocery lineup) can become very common if you cave ("I'll buy it for him this one time, because he just won't stop crying"), for the same reason that people get addicted to slot machines (uncommon and unpredictable reward makes you want to try again until you get it).
@ShadeSlayer191110 жыл бұрын
Sammi Palmer Actually, punishment might be a bad idea for training in general. If an animal knows that a certain behavior will get a bad reaction from the trainer, the animal will then perform that behavior anytime he/she wants to get that bad reaction (this is akin to them just wanting to piss you off). It's important to remember than the trainees are often just as much the trainers, and vice versa. Best thing to do with unwanted behaviors is to ignore them. The animal will (hopefully) disproportionately want to perform wanted behaviors to get rewards than negative behaviors that don't get anything.
