I know Beth you posted this video 3 years ago, but just wanted to say a huge thank you! I have had issues with leash walking since I had my puppy (13 wks toy poodle) and we were both struggling. I watched this video a number of times to fully understand what you were doing. We walked to the park this morning with so much confidence and ease, Im so amazed, surprised and appreciative. The short leash thing and occasional 'pop-thing' (which Im not too good at yet) and confident walking did the trick. My pup followed me with a few steps behind, head up, no picking things up from floor, understanding that I was the leader. I gave lots of praises and treats. Thank you!!

I don't really post on KZbin, but this is the time I have to say a BIG THANK YOU! I have a 9 and a half weeks old Swiss White Shepherd and our walks have literally been so frustrating for me and my dog due to the problems described in the video. I have watched so many different loose leash walking videos, but they always seem to have perfect puppies and dogs who never have any behavioural issues. Once again, thank you so much, this certainly is going to help my relationship with my puppy, since it makes me miserable looking at his offended and sad face after the walks. Best of luck in your endeavours.

Thank you! You’re awesome!!! I just got a 11 weeks old Shiba Inu puppy a few days ago and I already know how challenging this bread can be. She stubborn but I’m patient as well. Leash training has been the most difficult part so far because she’s just started getting used to it on her and she tries to sniff pick up anything from the ground. And would freeze a lot of times. I’ll start doing the popping to snap her out of it and hopefully it’ll get better. Keep posting stuff like that for puppies if you can. Thanks for the videos and amazing instructions

My dogs have retractable leashes and I do the same little snap action while holding the lock button, and all of my dogs that have ever been on them come to know the sound of me clicking the lock button on the leash and so they've learned when they hear the click sound it means pay attention. Keep them on a short leash and make them pay attention when they start to wonder or get distracted and eventually they'll think they're on the leash even when they're not and soon you won't have to put in the effort of keeping them close. They'll just do it naturally.

Hi I'm from Tasmania with an 8 week old border collie / golden retriever cross puppy. Each time i open the door, she rushes out, my fault cause i have been letting her run wild outside for the past 2 days without a leash! So with the leash now, which is today (first time) she took lead and started resisting after 3 minutes of walking on the leash. She resisted cause she wanted to play and pick up the pine barks. She sat down and started pulling back. So what i did, i turned my back to her and started walking away. After 30 seconds, she ran back towards the house or me (not sure)! Next time, i will block the doorway to prevent her from running out first and to follow me instead. I am also going to have some yummy treats to get her attention for the walk around our big yard. Very useful video. I like how you elaborate the key points in your video. Thank you!

My 7 month old Anatolian refuses to go on walks. And when I say refuse he won't go near the front or back gates, won't go near the front door. I have had him for a month and he lived with his group of anatolians on 300 acre ranch. He followed his mom and pop and siblings but never had a collar, leash or any training whatsoever. I am happy with the indoor progress I have made, he has calmed, starting to play, has learned to sit, lay down, come, etc. But he has a massive barrier to leaving the yard. I got him to follow me the first couple tries with a leash in the backyard but now he just lays down and refuses to follow or walk etc. I am very patient with him, reassuring only etc. I realize it's only been one month but his behavior is at odds with every other dog I have owned. I love walking with my dogs and wish to get this one doing the same. I should say he is already 30" tall at front shoulders and 95lbs so when he doesn't want to move there's not much you can do. He's basically a stubborn mule about walking.

@lizwoodard52865 жыл бұрын
@@neznam1524 I know exactly how you feel. My boy is still terrified of everything. Making him work really gave him the confidence he needed, teaching him things with treats really makes them feel on top of the world and that's where the trouble is, no confidence, so they scare easily. And I have got to the point now where he will wear his harness he still hates it and still try's to shut down but I try to snap him out of it quickly so he has no time to over think things. And I tried the slip leash but for some reason it made things worse. Put the collar on and walk out. His instinct is to follow u so when he does just praise him. When he gets a bit used to it then put the leash on and he will barely notice. You always have to make the scary things fun and have unlimited patience. I really hope everything works out for you and your baby. An btw I'm still using pee pads lol

I have a 5 year old bichon frise and she will walk to the end of our street and a little bit further but once she gets to a certain spot, she decides she's walked far enough and turns to face home and WILL NOT walk any further. I try pulling her but she stands on her hind legs and shakes her head around, making a massive fuss. I'll pick her up and walk her forward a bit before putting her down and she'll walk one or two steps before putting the breaks on again. I've tried bringing her treats but she won't take them and I've taken our friend's dog with me too to see if she'll walk with him but it doesn't work. She's not scared of anything, she's just lazy and wants to go home and I always give in and walk back because I've tried fighting with her but she's so determined to go home.

I have a 4 month old golden puppy. Im going to school with her. We have to teach the walk like this..let the pup walk, when she pulls we hve to stop, wait till the tension is of the leach and she makes eye contact then we are allowed to continue the walk. We are not allowed to give any corrections through the leach. But when i practise our walk and she gets in front of me i turn around and walk the other way. Then when she s back beside me i turn around again and walk off together. I find this a much easier way the get her to learn not to walk in front of me. Is this the way to do it?

Hello, I enjoyed your video and am interested in the slip leash you mention and used. I saw on amazon "slip lead". Is this the same thing? I am having the SAME exact issue with my 14 week old Beagle puppy. He currently wears a harness (due to kennel cough he got a few weeks ago the vet recommended it rather than a flat collar...he's cleared now though) but walking him has got to be the most difficult thing EVER. He stops, is super stubborn and won't even go 5 steps after stepping out the door, and it takes 10 minutes to go one block. Not to mention all the EATING he does with stuff on the ground.

I decided to bring our family dog for walks up a hill near me starting earlier tonight. I put her on the leash and we got two houses down my street before she just lay on the ground and refused to walk. I took the lead of to try maker her move (she was blocking a neighbors driveway) but left the collar on and she just sat there and refused to move until I took everything off her. It seemed like the moment she knew I was the one leading her, because when she slowed down a little to sniff I tugged the leash to have her keep up, she instantly started sulking. Guess she really doesn't like the tight leash.
@RuffBeginningsRehab8 жыл бұрын
leashes do NOT come naturally to dogs, that is why you have to teach them how it works. She just trained you that if she behaves that way, you won't lead her or bother her at all. That is what leads to dogs rolling on the ground, mouthing, barking, and acting up when you just try to get a leash on a dog. Hopefully you'll get lucky and she will grow out of it as she matures a little.

yes, she just needs to get used to it, no pressure, so just wearing it, then wearing it while eating, playing and training with no leash or dragging leash and build to using it over the course of a couple weeks. If supervised, try 2-4 bouts a day of wearing it an hour. She needs to have it on long enough she doesn't care about it anymore before taking it off. That is likely o take longer then 10 min.

Hi, what about short faced breeds? I have a pekingese 4 month puppy and I can't use the slip leash on him, just a harness. He is fine when he is going up the driveway to go to the bathroom and then when it comes to going anywhere after that he is full brake mode. Sometimes a tug works in the direction I want to go but most of the time that does not work. It's to the point that one of the neighbors thinks I abuse him since it is a constant struggle to get him to walk a foot!

9/10 months old isn't really a puppy. Adolescent dogs are much different. But you basically start in the house. Teach all the basics on leash, obedience drills, many I have on my channel. start building a bond that way and in the yard before venturing out. That way you will understand better what is going on with him and build more confidence inside and in the yard/drive way first for a week or so. Also getting in the car and going somewhere different to work can help too, but not if he doesn't understand leash guidance taught inside first.

our german shepard is almost like this dog, but he won't walk on the leash he lays down and won't move. he pulls his head out of the collar and sometimes bites the leash. we need help we have a vet appointment in 1 week and he won't get in the car no matter what. we could really use help. he's 7 months and is so stubborn and whines when we try to walk him on the leash, if he does move its only a short distance and he just won't move. we just got him from a ranch but he won't work with us. he's good off leash but we can't get him to walk on leash he stops being playful and won't move

Same with my German Shepard

A 7 month old is an adolescent, not a puppy. You need to teach him to walk on a leash and use a tool that he can't get out of and will learn quickly. Go to youtube and type Tyler Muto prong collar 1 and prong collar 2 and watch those to see what you think

I have an 18 week old Shihtzu and I am nervous about the slip leash as I was told they are dangerous for shihtzu. I am a new dog owner and am overwhelmed by the information available. I'd love to get him walking well on a leash - he just pulls and pulls and pulls on his harness, he eats EVERYTHING... ugh.

You need head control and you should be careful with slip leashes with dogs like pugs and shitzu's. Since you are a new dog owner, I would do a small star mark collar instead. It's a plastic prong collar. I know it looks scary, but it's safer and you can actually be MORE gentle on one. You can get them on amazon. It's always my go to for new owners and small breed dogs that might have a sensitive trachea or eye issues. Slip leash does take skill and practice. Make sure you practice on leash training with food IN the house and in the yard or hallway before going out with it. If you like my content, head to my page, find puppy playlist. Look at the most recent vide and work backwards :)

I have a Maltese. He's now 7 months and still won't walk on the leash. I can't even get him out of the door. He shuts all the way down once I put the leash on him. I tried tugging and pulling but he resists so much it looks like just sweeping the ground. I've bought 3 leashes and 2 harnesses and it's becoming very difficult.

+Kim Nielsen All of the things you see in the video...do in the house every day. Also, they need to be dragging a leash around. You can actually by a 'drag leash' OR just take a cheap nylon leash, clip to collar, and cut the end loop off so they don't get stuck on anything (burn the end so it doesn't fray). They will chew on it, etc. normal, just make sure it's a cheap leash. Discourage them from chewing of course, but understand it is a part of it, so don't make it a fancy leash :)

All the dog training video's seem to use a slip leash as a solution. Is it Impossible without?
@RuffBeginningsRehab2 жыл бұрын
I use a lot of prong and ecollar too. what else would you use? flat collar is comfortable to pull and bad for the neck and harness is literally designed for pulling so for "training" what other options are there. we occasionally use gentle leader.

Hello! I just started watching your channel. I think it's awesome! I am a Dog-walker/Trainer and I use a mix of Cesar Millan, Cheri Lucas and Jan Fennell methods. I was wondering, do you use these methods as well? I saw quite a few similarities. Thanks for posting!!

I followed your instructions to the T and my puppy is now afraid of me. I’m not sure how correcting a behavior with a “pop” will enforce good behavior.
@RuffBeginningsRehab6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't, it just gets rid of bad or can be used to motivate movement at a lower level. I'm sorry but for your puppy, you did it incorrectly or they didn't have enough basic understanding of the leash to be able to do this or your pup is too young. We have several intro videos to this in our puppy playlist section of the very first stages of introducing a leash.

chihuahua's can be really difficult with gentle leaders, but you could try. I rarely use them, but let me ask you, how old is your dog now?

any kind of slip collar around a chihuahuas neck can crush the wind pipe as they already have issues with that . I am currently training my rescue Chi to walk on a leash with a body harness . i am using high value food treats to get him to follow and not stop and pull on the leash .It takes MANY trys to get it right .

Seems really helpful, gonna try it. There is a difference in training a husky to walk on a leash? I heard they are very independent dogs so I got a doubt there
@RuffBeginningsRehab8 жыл бұрын
Just more driven, stubborn, etc. They will test you more and for longer so you have to be a strong leader.

Can I do this with a 7 week old schnauzer?
@ajozad17436 жыл бұрын
I used treats during the walk and now my dog will sit down and not budge until she gets a treat. I try to out wait her but I don't have all day, and sometimes she stops in the middle of the street when we're crossing. She's a 6 yr. old rat terrier mix and she needs to lose weight so I don't want to give her all those treats. She also knows if I'm faking it pretending to have a treat in my hand. So stubborn! What can I do now?

Dogs are not "bratty" Their minds do not work like that. That only speaks to our limitations as their trainers
@RuffBeginningsRehab3 жыл бұрын
Actually dogs are predators and will be very opportunistic and in a humanized way that is exactly "brattiness". Especially if owners have been very permissive with them they become spoiled and much like kids will act bratty. You don' have to use that term. You can say they take advantage, figure out how to get what they want, do what's allowed and become pushy or opportunistic...all under "bratty"

My golden doodle puppy will only walk to get the treat I have placed on the ground. He puts the brakes on immediately after that and then I have to keep dragging him... And if the treat is more than 1 foot away he won't even go for that! I have tried every kind of food, every kind of voice tone, etc. Any suggestions?
@RuffBeginningsRehab9 жыл бұрын
+Rob L You bet! Don't put the treat on the ground. Practice in the house using a treat and running backwards as he chases you and then gets the food. Once that is good (a day or two) use a leash in the house. The feel of the leash can make them stall. After doing that for a few minutes several times during the day, try it outside, but don't wait till he stops. Do it as soon as you leave the house (run backwards with him chasing you) then again and again. Keep it fun. That would be my advice to you to start. Do not put the treat on the ground, keep it in your hand for this. Also, have him skip breakfast so he'll be more hungry when working with him through out the day to get him over this hump.
