so did you only use bonsai soil and the cactus mix? I'm getting some new plants (one cutting, one pre rooted (6-12in tall) and i'm unsure what type of soil they should be planted in to start and then what to plant in when they are ready to start transferring into bonsai

Hi you make a comment that, Wisteria only flower on new growth stems. During my research, it is suggested that, Wisteria flower first, before any new growth. It is also suggested that, If you prune back to much, you will remove most of your new flower buds.

I got my 1st wisteria yesterday and its just a single trunk about 16 inches tall with 5 branches all at the top 1/3 of the tree. Looks like its 8-12 months old, I was wondering if I could cut it in half without killing it and if that would produce 2 new shoots below my cut?

I think I have a juniper bonsai starter. Any tips to trim them?

When you trim a bonsai tree starting out you want to pick the form you want your tree to take. Keep that in mind. After you decide that try and look for two things. One, leaves that are blocking sunlight out for other leaves on primary branches. Two, look for branches that are rubbing each other. Branches that cross and rub create an openings in the branch that will let in infection, rot etc.

can you do an update on your wisteria please, i’ve just brought a wisteria from a garden centre and hoping to turn it into a bonsai. it has no leaves, so i have nothing to shape or work with yet. not sure how much growth to expect and how fast? x

Yes, I'd love to. Although it might have to be in a couple of weeks. I want him to be in his full crown glory cause he's put on some decent mass. Truth be told I love to shape mine when he has no leaves because then I can see his extensive ramifications without missing anything hiding behind his leaves. If you can get his primary branches in order you can really get a good foundation so that when the leaves come in in about two or three weeks he'll look his best. Wisteria is a little slow to mature often not flowering from 3-5 years after planting. They are swift growers though, some can shoot up to 10 ft in just one season. I hope all this makes sense. @@TheGreenAlchemist thank-you for your reply, yes i’ll stay tuned for whenever he’s ready. yes that makes sense but mine really is just a stick at the moment, it did have some branches when i brought it home on sunday but for a bonsai it had grown too tall before the stems had branched off so i made the teeth griping choice to cut it shorter. i’m happy to wait for flowers i’m just hoping i see some kind of growth soon so i know i’ve not wiped him out completely. i’ve been watching lots of videos since i got it and all have leaves even at a smaller size. i hope i’ve made the right choice. yours is the only video that i could really relate to and explained things well. so thankyou for that - your accent is cool too!

Thanks for the video. I have grown a wisteria from seed in a small 20 cell seed tray and it is now about 3" tall. I wanted to ask when I should move the plant into a larger container and what size to use if I want to keep the plant around a few feet high?

Typically most seedling are ready for transplanting after 6-8 weeks. Really they are ready to be transplanted once the roots are doing really well, and encircling its container. If you aren't sure, take a butter knife and pop one out and look at its roots. Coincidentally, once the crowns of neighboring plants are starting to get really crowded it's time to transplant. Take your time though jumping up in sizes. I'd say for now I wouldn't go any higher than a six inch pot, you may do eight but I honestly do feel it will be too big. He'll be going dormant before going so I'd get him repotted soon. let me know if you have any questions on how to repot, medium, pH and so forth! Plant Prudently!

Someone please help me i got an indoor coconut palm and I need help how often do I have to water and what do I have to feed it. Am scared if it dies please someone reply.

Palms are notorious for loving water. I think they need around 2 inches a week. New plants before becoming established may need water every day if not, then certainly every other day. Watering 2-3 times a week is not uncommon. Now this is for an outdoor tree. Depending on the size of your plant, the temperature of your house, your humidity indoors and what type of container it is in will all have a factor in how often you need to water it. What I had to do was buy a moisture and temperature monitor, they sell ones that do both at Lowe's, Home Depot and walmart for around 12 bucks. Also get yourself a humidifier too. As for the container, if it's plastic or glass or metal or any variation of those then water will not evaporate fast from say if it was in mica, clay, terracotta etc. I let maybe the top inch of the soil dry out before I water again. Use your finger or get you a moisture meter for around $10 at the previously mentioned stores to help you better keep track. How much light your plant receives is important too. The better the light your plant gets the more water it will need to keep up with photosynthesis. With feedings dolomite lime, bone meal and kelp meal are all good to feed your tree but will leave them lacing in iron or manganese so, I would look for a general all purpose fertilizer that has those elements in it.

I just want people to give more thought to some of their long-term plantings. Too many times I see someone plant a tree right next to their house and then in a couple of years, they have to dig it up because the tree did what it does naturally. Grow.

You do not have Chinese Wisteria Sinensis. If it's Asian you probably have the Japanese Wisteria Floribunda. As it is spiraling clockwise when viewed from the top-down. The Sinensis would spiral counter-clockwise. I'm not able to identify the American varieties. Also I may be wrong, but that is one way to tell between Chinese or Japanese varieties. My guess is Wisteria Floribunda
