Sean - you are an amazing speaker. I know you’re extremely busy and appreciate you explaining all about dogs. I’ve learned so much in the 2 months I’ve been watching. I’ve shared you with my family and friends and even my massage clients. Mainly because you are an amazing instructor. You just might have another calling. Thank you so much - from Texas

Training through positive reinforcement is the best way to train a dog. They are easily distracted, especially when young. You're absolutely correct on that point !!!!

My Border Collies have responded to positive reinforcement, but you must be decisive in what you do. Sean’s method of selecting a way of dealing with a dog who isn’t responsive is outstanding.

i have always had golden retrievers and labs, they are both such cuddle dogs. I have my first border collie/GSP, this truly is a very different dog. My last golden was really smart, knew so many words, i taught him service dog tasks on suggestion by a trainer…then i was in a car accident and that really came in handy. this dog now, she’s 20 months….wants to work all the time. I had to train naptime and timeout from playing/which is her work. i’m working on a proper heel to keep her from pulling, she’s doing well but this breed is alert ALL the time. I adopted her as a challenge to train, and she hasn’t disappointed. i’m also trying to curtail her herding/ demand barking when she’s tired….she doesn’t want a game to end and she can throw a tantrum…..what we’re doing is reducing them, high praise when she’s not doing them and ignoring like a leader should, not cowering but standing….like watching a toddler play it out, as she winds down i put her in a sit or lie down…her face😂it doesn’t go like she’d planned. sorry this is so long.

I think your voice helps the sheep feel somewhat safer. You are there, watching. And they have been through the routine before. So the normal pack instinct and response, as you teach, to the 'threat' of the dog predation concern is lessened. There is nervous herd tension, creating movement, but not alot of bleating in fear. They must appreciate you. You lead them to greener fields, you move them around before bad weather approaches. Surely they respect you, Sean.

I learn so much with each video. Thanks for really showing, instead of just giving tidbits. The retired border collie up my lane (the farmers are retired too) still has a one focus mind. It's been changed to fetch. She doesn't even notice other dogs when there is a ball to be tosses. Another farmer has his sheep and his sheltie actually groom each other, so I guess some variation happens. I've seen the grooming happen with others as well. (Sheep seem to enjoy their ears being washed)

Do you have any BCs that herd both cows and sheep? Surely, they have to learn different methods of herding each, but Dr. Llewellyn-the vet and owner of my Tess's family-had BCs-Sam and Dee Dee-did both. My Tess herded geese and ducks as well.

Sean, I hate to be critical, but the volume between your narration and the music is tremendous, I set my volume to be able to understand what you're, but at that volume the music really blasts out when it plays. Please consider attenuating the music in proportion to your narrative. Thanks. I really, really enjoy your channel. 😀❤👍👍👍👍👍

History of the shepherds crook. How they were made? From a sapling with roots? What are the various uses? Sizes? Catholic Church Bishops have a real tall crook. And fancy. Yours seems kinda fancy, has that curl. Where do you buy them now. Are they still home made in your country?

As usual LOTS of information. I really respect your the way you present herding. So much more insight and humanity. Others sights have cold, grumpy old men.😂 NOW why do you say lie down at the time you do? I know zero about herding. But, it always looks like things are running smooth. And you stop the dog.

In these videos, I see sticks in the ground around the dogs. Are these used as targets to teach the dog to go around rather than to go into the sheep? Or are those just tall, dry, grass stocks?

@SEAN: DO YOU HAVE PREDATORS THAT THREATEN THE SHEEP; AND, IF YOU DO, THEN WILL THE DOGS DEFEND THE SHEEP OR ATTACK THE PREDATOR?
@zwenkwiel816
@zwenkwiel816 2 ай бұрын
Dont think they have wolves over there. Mainland europe does but in the UK/ireland they killed them all 100's of years ago. Predators they do have like foxes and stoats are too small to really threaten sheep. Also border collies would probably eaten alive by a wolf. Need way bigger livestock guardian dogs if you want to guard against wolves

Call me dumb but perhaps you can do few posts from questions. You know herding and each dog so well. You probably don’t realize that we need to see through your eyes. At times you’re like a herding dogs or sheep mind reader and respond to situations I don’t see yet. Like are the dogs using eye contact to move a stubborn ewe? Or do herding dog use strictly body movement to make sheep move on. Crouching in the grass & sneaking, why? How do several dogs herding at the same know which call is meant for them? Several dogs herding, is it difficult for one to remain at lie down while others a running? You’ve had the herd very far away. Now is it natural or your training that goes from you and runs wide and far from the sheep? Is that because don’t want to be seen until they’re in back of the herd? Do the sheep engage in a stare off with the dogs. If so how do the dogs respond to that? How do the dogs know where you want the sheep? My questions may be dumb. I want to see everything BC’s are gifted with. I hv so many things I want you to explain on you posts. I would love to see closer the eye action and what movements the dogs are doing. One biggie I’d like to hear about is the actual herd and what formations you expect the dogs to keep them in. Perhaps use a DRONE & iPen to show us open field herding and what the dogs do to get them narrowed down for a gate. That’s 2 videos🥴. Darn that situation is a 2 posts situation. Lastly, when you take them to show do they get along with other dogs
