You are awesome and you have bred a line of truly fantastic horses. I was so glad to see you wearing a helmet while working with your colts. I sustained a strike to the head from a skittish mare who took the opportunity to stomp me while I was down. There was no helicopter available to transport me, so they loaded me into an ambulance for the 100 mile trip to our nearest Trauma Center. I don’t remember much after we loaded up.. lol, I vaguely remember being MAD about them cutting my boots and favorite jeans off of me (along with everything else), but I have never been more grateful to 4 men in my life as I was and am to that Crew. They realized how significant my injuries were and stopped in another county to pick up two additional Paramedics which was why there were 4 counting the driver. I went into cardiac arrest, and was told later that I had been shocked multiple times and CPR was done along with starting multiple IV’s and literally squeezing saline into my body to make up for the blood I was losing. Thankfully I made it into the very capable hands of the Trauma Crew and Surgeon and into surgery. I came through with a head injury, more broken bones than I can recall, but what nearly claimed my life was a severed Splenic Artery and lacerated Renal Artery. It took me over a year to recover, and I will never walk the same. The simple decision not to put on a helmet nearly killed me.. it was the strike to my head that knocked me out and put me on the ground under a panicked horse. Thank you for being the inspiration that you are, but more importantly thank you for teaching young riders about helmet safety! I aspire to be more like you.

My Uncle has a yearling, he’s such a spunky colt. Usually their colts are halterbroke, leadbroke, etc by yearlings but this guys was turned out with a few weanlings last year. He’s barrel and cutting bred and SPUNKY!! Definitely has that barrel horse shine through in his attitude. He’ll be 2 in May and will start basic saddle training a year from now. So exciting!!

Looks as if all the horses are in boot camp! Get some rope gloves to prevent burns!. My friend is running barrels for the 1st time tonight (4/11) Your reassurance & confidence is going to get us maiden run! 1% better each time! When you are working with your fantasy horses it makes it thrilling!

May I ask why you wait until they are yearlings to work with them ? I'm just curious, I have a yearling also.

I never train horses younger than a year because it can be damaging, mentally and physically, I mean riding and other things like driving not anything like Fallon is doing.

I waited until six months for the very basic stuff, then at one year more ground work. You have to remember they are so much like children.

I was wondering the same thing. My trainer always has the foals comfortable with touch and having their feet picked up by a year, and tries to have them halter broke. She doesn't do anything like lunging or saddling until much later though, usually waits til 4 to break them.
