The greatest movie and villain ever. He's a real villain. I've met and worked with many people like that, they know how to control the narrative and make sure they get what they want.

What was Alonzo's original plan? Did he expect Hoyt to be someone whom he could corrupt on his first day? Did he plan to set-up and kill whomever was assigned to him for that day? Or, was this all improvised on the fly? He mentions playing chess at one point, but I get the sense that he is so far in the hole right now that he is running almost minute to minute in a desperate bid to outrun his reckless actions.

Hell yes! Training Day. Here's a film so meticulously put together that it takes multiple viewings to really get the full picture. Great review/retrospective!

This analysis is garbage. Alonzo didn't stand back because he didn't care about others, he stood back because he wanted to see how Jake could handle himself on the street, and wasn't going to intervene unless he absolutely had to. He put his time in and didn't want to expend the effort on wrestling a couple of crack addicts. It was beneath him and totally unnecessary.
