I WAS a Chicago Area Machinist (Manual & CNC) for over 20 years... Everything's mostly offshored now, and what remains are mostly operators making $12 an hour to start... Maybe $15 after 2 or 3 years, and much of that's through temp and staffing agencies because CEOs don't want to pay decent wages... I DON'T live in Chicago anymore as a result, and have long since sold my tools and thrown away my apron and safety glasses!

I took a 200 hour cnc class at a local tech school when I was 62 years old last year. I was not very good at it, but I made one of those cubes with the four holes on each side of the cube. We got plenty of hands on. I took it just to learn. I am too old for the industry. I had an interview for another manufacturing job and told the guy I was going to take a cnc class instead of taking any job. He told me you will just be another "button pusher". I was kind of turned off by the guy and the company when he told me that.

I worked CNC job for 5 years . But my duties repair mistake parts to be good to ship to customers after that inspection guys double check. That job made my leg and shoulder shut down of the health. Sometimes my shoulder pain again when I bring or work hardly. There are people who are luckier than me .who start CNC job just operating on machine even though they start working from zero of knowledge of CNC machine operator. Before Korean owner he was lucky when hiring me to work his parts. I remembered that time manager took bad parts to me for repair and fixing mistakes of done parts. Even though the first parts from new customer order of his . I had to fix them to be good before shipping. I had repaired those new parts before he waited for them. The owner picked the parts after I repaired them . Time later he got new contact from those parts .I always deburrg and repair them each year. Set up man and Program man who work badly. Details of those parts I had to use the tools to fix and repair shape and dimension depth for their products. If im owner i kicked them out soon. While I repair mistakes parts from them each year my health damage so much. Each time my thoughts to remember history to work for that company I'm very sad for my destiny with cheap wage.
