I first stopped off at Mineola in 1966 to change trains for Oyster Bay on a trip from Stony Brook. It has changed since, but in one way it hasn't. It's the best train watching spot o Long Island. Thanks for bringing some of it back.

Great video. I grew up a few blocks away from there. I lost most of my old pictures of the old Mineola train station. Used to go there with my dad growing up in the 90's just to watch the trains. You couldn't even recognize it now, since the third rail project. Nassau tower is gone. He crossing on the double switch is gone. It's not too often that you see GP-38 on the main line. And the sparks from the 3rd rail foot. I could watch this over and over

A long time ago I used to hang out and watch the freight trains at night by the tower. I was there so often, I was an obvious railfan. One night, the guy in the the tower asked me from that window, "What are you doing?" I replied "Just watching trains." I was 17 at the time. He let me go upstairs in the tower! After about 30-40 minutes of watching him throw those big Armstrong levers for the switches, some bells rang and he told me to throw 17 and 34. I think those were the numbers!?!. Anyway, after I threw them, he said "Now you can tell people that you threw the switches for the LIRR!" I still have a printout of the trains from that night, but I'll keep it vague I'm sure he's retired by now, but I don't want to get anyone in trouble. I'm glad I grew up back then! That guy certainly gave me a cool, LIRR railfan memory! Great video!

RIP Nassau Tower :( The tower was torn down on September 18th, 2021. It is also official that aside from the 2nd Street grade crossing on the Oyster Bay Branch, that Mineola is fully grade-separated. Well the Main Line is now that the pedestrian crossing is gone and Willis Avenue was eliminated on both branches, reopened on September 3rd, 2021.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. In the future, things will be very different. For one, no more grade crossings, which will eliminate traffic conflicts between the streets and the rails (excited to see this one). Also, those last few clips only reinforce the need for the third track.

M7 entered into service in 2002, the contract was signed by Bombardier to replace the M1 cars. Then the cars have to be tested and built which costs money and several hours of work, which in turn is why it takes a few years to have the new cars on the tracks after signing the contract. We have a pair of M9's built but they still need testing, and we were hoping to get them on the tracks by 2016 but it will be delayed until 2019 at least to replace the aging M3 car in anticipation for East Side Access being completed along with the second electrified track from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma (which is in progress).

I know. I'm from Long Island and have been riding these trains since I was only a year old. I've been to all 124 stations, and if it wasn't so expensive to move back, I would be getting my own footage. Instead I have to live in Pennsylvania. I miss my LIRR trains, and I miss the M1 and the smell of those leather seats! Takes me back. Going to be 26, the derailment will not derail me from riding a train, and I've been on these bad boys for nearly 25 years.
@Lirrfilmer20048 жыл бұрын
so that means the M7 is 14 years old now btw M3 is still running on track
@mattkowal908 жыл бұрын
Demonic Taco41 The M3 is scheduled to be off the tracks and out of service within the next 5 years if we can get the M9 through testing and onto the tracks for East Side Access. The 770 M1 cars were delivered from late 1968 to early 1973. The M3 cars were delivered from 1984-1986, but they did couple M1 and M3 cars together (M1 has the engineer window slide up and down, M3 has the engineer window slide left and right) with the first revenue M1 being a rush hour Babylon local to Penn Station on December 30th, 1968. The stations on the Babylon Branch were not all elevated, it was blowing the horn through crossings in Lindenhurst, Copiague, Amityville, Massapequa Park, Bellmore, and Merrick. All stations in electrified territory had hi-level platforms installed for the cars since they decided not to put boarding stairs at the doors to make it quicker.

How I miss the LIRR old rolling stock. The GP-38's, Alco FA-2's, the old passenger coaches (bar car included) and the M3's: they provided us Long Islanders a comfortable commute to and from the city. This new rolling stock I am so NOT loving it! The seats on the M7 and on the C3 double deckers are smaller. And there's less leg room. The EMD DM30AC Diesels have been plagued with mechanical problems that are still lingering to this day. And let's face it. These new trains are downright UGLY. They are such an eyesore.
