Trains around Westenhanger and Sandling (HS1, SEML) - 01/09/2022

The 173rd video of my train spotting adventures.

At last getting to the limited high speed side of the UK (until HS2 that is), this trip takes us down to Kent to visit some great spots between Westenhanger and Sandling railway stations, situated on national rail tracks but right alongside HS1, very few miles from the Channel Tunnel entrance near Folkstone. Seen here are mainline southeastern services from London/Kent alongside Javelin units, and Eurostar high speed units, including numerous remaining Class 373s.

ES) Services towards Ashford & Ebbsfleet International (non-stop until 2025), London St Pancras International, or onwards to Europe towards Paris Gare Du Nord, Brussels South/Midi, Amsterdam Centraal and to the South of France.

2:11 why did the eurostar have both pantographs down ?

I believe they sometimes "coast" along sections of track, i.e., it's moving fast enough that the driver decides to depower and let the train glide along for a bit, maybe to save power, since the train won't slow down that quickly.

@@HST_Productionsit’s all to do with the neutral section between that of HS1 and the Channel Tunnel, they lower the pantographs to change setting of them as the overhead wires in the tunnel being much higher than at Westenhanger.

The 374 at 8:04 was pantographs down too but yes it’s to do with the neutral section and height change, power goes from CTRL 25kv to ET 25kv
