Trains at Balcombe

Balcombe went back to 2 trains per hour (even on Sundays) after an hourly service outside of rush hours for over 30 years in 2018. Both are normally Bedford Thameslink services, with Cambridge ones non-stopping.

They fit into the northbound platform ok; both platforms used to be equal length, but a friend train derailed in the station in 1985, demolishing much of the southbound platform, and only enough was restored to accommodate 8 carriages. (These days, most trains serving Balcombe are 12-car!!). Trains regularly pull forward in the arched section under the road bridge (though passengers are advised not to wait for trains in that srea); previously they used to stop short of this.
