A fantastic afternoon spent at Newport station on the South Wales Mainline where we see plenty of services from Great Western Railway, Arriva Trains Wales, Cross Country and freight from DB Cargo UK and Freightliner.
Newport station was built in 1850 for the Great Western Railways extension into Wales, although the line was actually opened by the South Wales Railway. During its life time the station has gone through several redesigns by being enlarged with the introduction of new platforms, this was done in 1880, 1928 and 2010.
All that was done was getting to the platforms longer to accommodate longer trains and also when the new signalling was introduced. The station was originally called Newport High Street, this was because there were two other stations located with the town, these were called Mill Street and Dock Street. However both of these stations were closed in the 1960's which in turn also allowed the main station to be renamed to just Newport.
Last year the station took in roughly 2.6 million passengers. In turn making this the third busiest station in Wales, the other two being Cardiff and Cardfiff Queen Street.
My next station is going to be Severn Tunnel Junction.
