Back in 1978 I had an interview at Norwich for a job as a secondman at Norwich Thorpe, got the job & had my date to start, Found some lodgings with a Norwich driver & his wife about 15 minutes walk from the depot.Everyone I met was so friendly & encouraging. then I got the chance of a start for the same day in Birmingham closer to home. often wonder what would have happened over the years if I had made the move.I think I would still be there, the Norwich folk were brilliant.

Spent a lot of time on Norwich station in the 80s when I was kid and was fascinated by how they got the locos from one end of the train to the other! Also loved the summer Saturdays when trains seemed to come in from all over the country heading for Great Yarmouth and carried the hope of seeing something other than a Class 31 or 47 in Norwich!

Great post- already seems like a bygone age! I love the modifications to the 03 to keep her warm! I always liked 47566 as it had distinctive clear head code glasses and you could see the twin bulbs underneath! It kept these right into Inter City Mainline livery too! Well done too for recording the DMUs - we always used to ignore these!

Darn it makes me feel old watching this, as use to travel on them trains as an 80's child when going on holiday to Great Yarmouth..

Just ache to be back there, SO much to see in this video, a real railway, real history. Love that first part coming into Norwich especially!

The last scene shows the full catering vehicle in the formation. They definitely served a fry up in each direction on the Liv St to Kings Lynn expresses.

Another fantastic video Roy. It brought back many happy memories. Well done for recording the "humble" DMUs (loved the 105s!) when most people didn't bother. Thanks very much for sharing your wonderful archive material.

Another memory provoking video Roy. Thanks for another trip down memory lane. Excellent videos of a time much loved by a few but much maligned by many. Superb.

Thorpe Junction was a popular spot for many years opposite Crown Point TMD. Many regretted the eventual loss of the boxes on the triangle in 1987.

A Nice blast from the past. I am sure there was a class 120 DMU heading out to either Sheringham Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft.

Really enjoyable to watch 👍 Were passengers allowed to wonder all over the tracks back in 1986? @ 02:30 someone in white trainers crossing the line & also @ 07:51 several passengers crossing, it`s amazing to compare this to the way things are today, it`s a totally different world.

I reported to staff a passenger crossing the line at the east end of Nottingham station back in June 2019 and the staff could not care less- even though they could also see them!

Can anyone tell me what the bracket on the font of the 03 shunter is for, and why the grille is covered over ?
@royharrison41223 жыл бұрын
I don't know what the bracket was for Daniel, regarding the Grille being covered, all I can say it was in February and was Freezing that day.
@garypage20903 жыл бұрын
The bracket was fitted when the 03s were modified with air brakes. The bracket was designed to hold a set of longer brake and main reservoir pipes. I enjoyed the video Roy, reminded me of my days based at Cambridge as a secondman between 1978 and 1981. 43 years later and now based at King's Cross I'm still enjoying my career.

Were the tracks at Norwich station prone to waterlogged back then as they are these days? Whatever the weather the tacks at the bufferstop ends of the platforms seem to be laid in mud and not granite chips.

Back in the days when we had a 'proper railway'!

andrew ganley if media reports are anything to go by the railways are about to get even worse, instead of franchises running services on a route individual services will be run by different companies....
