My childhood station - always remember being just a little freaked out walking between platforms 1 and 2 at the top end (by Platform 8) past the buzzing electric substation. Would have been 7/8 when this video was taken

Rugby reminds me of English Electric and I still love BR' s blue livery complete with the famous arrow logo. Wonderful video, thank you.

fabulous footage! around this time I would buy a rover ticket and often spend a day on Rugby or Nuneaton to cop a few 86 and 87's, SO much power in them! I miss those days! Rugby felt and looked like a derelict Kings cross as I'd never seen anything like it coming from Lincoln! wonderful place, loved every second of my trips there which would often be a 31 haul from Peterborough if I remember correctly

Thank you so much again Roy. I was 14 at the time and lived near Roade cutting which was at the southern point of the Northampton loop. I was often riding around on 310s and visited Rugby many times. I miss those days so much and all the variety of traction so seeing this again brings back some wonderful memories. I wish I had a tardis!

Great video, there is so much in this. I have lived in Rugby since 1988. The station did have a weird run down atmosphere until modernised and this captures it all, from 'Cartic 4s' and all those Ford Escorts, Speedlink, Class 25s and all that electric traction. I did think that the Class 86 entering Rugby from the South looked a bit frightening as it rides the track work... have to say it is all much smoother these days!

Lived and worked in Rugby in the 80's. Great town, good people, massive station complex. Strange to be watching this over 30 yrs later living in Canada! Just beyond the tracks on GEC land was where Frank Whittle demonstrated the jet engine to the guy from the ministry - blew him off his feet! At the other end of the station the Victorian Channel Tunnel line crossed this railway. Next to that bridge was the national Steam Locomotive Testing Station opened just after the war. Lots of amazing things in one small area. Less than a mile south is Tom Brown's Rugby school where the plaque declares "William Web Ellis with a fine disregard for the rules picked up the ball and ran, thus inventing Rugby Football".

It's changed so much since this video. Virgin did a great job of modernising. I have always wondered why the station building on the central platform is so big, what goes on in all those rooms?

@@richardjelley3074 Part of the upstairs was where the Controllers worked running the trains in a large area around Rugby. Large empty rooms when I went upstairs with my school children in '85.

What a fabulous collection from a bygone era. Loved the A/C electric locos, and wow! The cars on that cartic4 would be worth more now than the day you filmed them. Thank you so much for the time you spend posting these videos. KZbin at its best.

Great video and many a happy hour spent on the Southern end of this Station watching the sparkles go past:-) Also shows what a shock to the system the introduction of Inter City livery was- we thought it looked amazing at the time! Great to see the 86s still on Freightliners through here- but will they be withdrawn as I hear that they are getting ten of the Anglian 90s soon:-((

Doubly interesting: at 11:10 is an unconverted 86/0; they were rarely used on Inter-City work being restricted, in theory, to 80 mph.

I grew up on a farm next to the Northampton loop line and loved watching the different freight trains go through. I remember being woken a few times in the dead of night by a 37 thumping it's way through the cutting towards long Buckby station. The vibrations went through the house, happy days!

Superb footage Roy with some good captures on film of test car 10, 25's, the old coach in the departmental train and I think Starlight express in early IC exc livery. I remember seeing this loco at Carlisle in the summer of 84 was the first 86 I ever saw in the new colours. Really loved seeing the footage of the cartics with the ford escorts as I am scratchbuilding the same train for my wemblesden park exhibition layout.

Awesome video brings back so many memories for me having been originally born and raised in Rugby in the 1970's through to the early 90's and in the mid 80's I'd often spend hours watching trains from the the myson house car park just north of the station, I have to admit though I was a little disgusted to so "That Rancid Can" 86213 Lancashire Witch in this Video 😠 I hate that loco with a vengeance as it failed on me more than once when I later used to go out riding on trains around the Midlands, however you redeemed yourself by showing my personal beast 87015 Howerd of Effingham in this Video too, it was great to see it again sadly it did not escape the cutters torch RIP when 86213 is Preserved! There is no justice in the world, nice to see a couple of Roarers too, 85 on parcels and an 81 on passenger with aircon stock that it could not power properly due to the incompatable earthing arrangement on the gen 1 electrics, still it really brought back so many memories of the classic rugby station I knew from my childhood and it's a shame you never filmed on of the BOC trains as that would have made this video for me, thanks again for posting this up and sharing such wonderful memories

The vast majority of WCML passenger trains then were worked by 86's and 87's. 85's did work some, but they were more commonly seen on freight and parcels. This was actually filmed 4 years before the 90's entered traffic.

I seem to recall that the Class 81's and 85' were doing more of the inter regional trains by then, coming on/of at Coventry or more often Birmingham. If only I still had my notes!

Especially rugby station: until the late-90's it was in need of much attention. I do miss the bay platforms and the wagon variety! I used to watch the goods trains pull into the sidings from the 'Ironbridge' in the early 90's (well after Rugby's golden rail period.
