Plenty of loco and unit variety in this two part selection from a sunny Peterborough on a Summer 1989 afternoon and evening. Locos seen include Class 08, 31, 37, 47, 56, 91, and HST, with units including Class 101, 114, 128, 156, and 317. Filmed during June 1989.

Shame that one wasn't preserved. They looked so unique with their exhaust pipes running up in front of the cab :)

cockle0979 agreed, unfortunately they had asbestos and I read somewhere about quick fuel consumption.

What's the livery on the DMU @9:51? Not seen that before. Good video once again.

I believe that is a class 100, 975664 (ex 51122) & 975637 (ex 56300) being used as an inspection unit called "Stourton Saloon" - I guess the livery is a one off based on the Provincial Services livery that the Pacers carried around this time

I know they used the HST's as a DVT until the Mark 4 & proper DVT's were ready, but why did they run a 91 on electric then have the diesel running on the class 43 on the rear?

Roberto Riccioni the HST sets used 3-phase electric power through out and the Class 91s did not supply this they had to run the HST sets with one HST power car fitted with TDM equipment. The power cars had their traction motors isolated as they were not needed. Unfortunately they discovered quite quickly that the HST power cars were more likely to fail if they only ran enough to produce the hotel load for the train. As the traction motors had not been removed, they reconnected them to the control gear and the problems disappeared. Performance also improved. Once the Mk4 coaches were introduced the TDM equipment was removed and the Class 91s were replaced by a second HST power car.
