Trains next to the Old Peloponnese Station.

The Old Athens Central Station of metric gauge line...a beautiful stracture built in 1884 and was servicing the Peloponnesian network for 121 years until its close down in 2005. Now only the standard gauge line passes from this area and next to this remarkable building to remind it its glorious times of the 20th century. The area has changed dramatically the last 8 years with many old buildings to have been destroyed and the ''new'' south entrance of the future Athens Central...however Athens ''Peloponnese'' station has been abandoned since its closure. A short video with scenes of the old station and with some trains to/from Thessaloniki and Chalkida at the area next to the station, with marks of an other century still visible.

I remember the Peloponnese Station at both Athens and Piraeus on my first trip out of the UK in 1988.

A little bit late but thank you for the comment. You had the chance to see the two stations still at "their best"...now the station of Piraeus is "destroyed" due to the modernization and the other in Athens is abandoned. However, there are some positive news about Athens "Peloponnese" station as the municipality is planning to create the new Railway Museum at the area and refubrish the building.

Στέργιε σε ευχαριστώ πολύ! Ωραίο σημείο (για μέσα στην Αθήνα βέβαια) που έστω περιστασιακά πρέπει να βγάζουμε κάτι πριν η περιοχή αλλάξει ξανά και κατά τη γνώμη μου χαθούν κάποια ''πράγματα'' που τώρα ίσως και πάλι φαίνονται ασήμαντα.

I think that if the tram comes all the way to stathmos larisis, this old Peloponnese building should be used as the tram terminal station building and link it up with stathmos larisis station

why did the Peloponnese line close as there are some big towns like Patras , Pyrgos, Tripoli and Kalamata?

Two clear reasons are a lack of money due to the financial crisis and the upgrade, standardization and electrification of the single metre-gauge line into a double standard-gauge track, at least between Athens and Patras. The third and more sinister reason is the years of bad management of the Hellenic Railways which ultimately left them in a state of decay and under-operation, if not even malfunction and ultimately non-existence.
