I live near to the west coast mainline just north of Crewe, I recall lying in bed at night as a child in the 70's and just could hear these for miles, especially in the summer nights.

Me to, same. on a calm summers night you could hear them approaching from 3 miles away. i know that because i lived high up on a hill and i could see the tracks they rode along. was 3 miles away from my location at the time.

I love the irony that these 60 year old workhorses are still used to tow broken down modern trains
@DannieGemz

Well the where built at a time when our Rail industry was at it's peak British engineering at it's finest. You gotta remember a lot of these so called 'modern' trains are built abroad anyway, sadly a lot of our rail building capacity has diminished and successive governments choose to invest in cheaper made products from abroad , mostly Germany / Swiss or Danish brands. With any luck this may change with this new Labour governments commitment to re-nationalize the rail network, and hopefully kick start British production once more. These bad boys where built to last good ol class 37

@@DannieGemz Just to counter your point, there's nothing innately wrong with trains made in Germany, Switzerland or Denmark. They are still solid machines, but I do agree that we should restart our heavy industry and make our own locos again because, mainly, it will open up a LOT of skilled engineering jobs locally

Dane here. We have not had any production of railway material for more than a couple of decades now, so I wonder what we might have sold to the UK.

Used to take them for granted back in the day and ‘oh it’s just another 37’. Will we ever feel the same about a 66 as we do now about these vintage workhorses?

Unlikely I’d say but some appreciation of Sheds will likely grow as they start being phased out in the future. 👍

When I was young they used to scare me a bit - the snub nose, darkened split windscreen looked a bit satanic, and that pulsating growl as they ticked over! I miss them now though 😢

The sound of the double headed C37 iron ore trains labouring up a 1 in 35 stretch at Annfield Plain in County Durham heading for the steel works at Consett in the 1970's still resonates in my head, you could hear them for miles, the best sounding locomotive ever built in my opinion...

In Italy we have loco FS Class D345 and D445, with a 63L V8/95L V12 Engine which revs up to 1500 rpm: they sounds amazing, but are very muted compare to these beasts. I can only imagine the 37 exhaust on the D445; it will probably destroy all windows at every station.

Class 37s were built to meet a standard / specification. Now things are built to meet a price. The difference is an extra 30+ years of useful service life, so maybe it turned out to be the best value after all. There is a lesson in there methinks 😊

60s - built in obsolescence, 37s - built! In modern terms 'over-engineered'. Going from rail to road, and I remember chatting to a driver of a CVG-6 in the late 70s, who said that it was the conversion to one man operated that would drive those buses to extinction. And it did indeed do that. Almost any spare parts could be put together in a local workshop...
