I just wanna say, as a PSA: don’t touch butterfly wings. They’re covered in scales that repel water and maintain their flying efficiency. That’s the colored dusting stuff you might see on your fingers if you do touch their wings. If you’re really not careful you can tear the wings too. Butterflies can fly with scales missing but if they get caught in water they’ll get stuck, and usually can’t fly if the wings are torn.

It's called standing for what you believe in. Record executives in Nashville seemed ashamed of traditional country music and began producing more commercial-sounding music with "crossover appeal." Many artists who were originally a part of the neotraditional movement in the early to mid 90s were happy to sell out and go pop to advance their careers. Those that remained traditional such as George Strait and Alan Jackson didn't like that the industry had turned its back on traditional country music stalwarts such as George Jones and Merle Haggard. I believe there's a place for all types and variations of music, but it did feel like there was a concerted effort on music row to "kill" traditional country music.

i will say this as someone who went to school with faith hill and tim mcgraw's kids... 2003 was right around when her oldest and middle children started kindergarten and a couple years after she gave birth to her youngest. LeAnne almost had the Taylor Swift career. I am old enough to remember that one. She tore out the gate as a twelve year old girl with ridiculously huge hits that really were throwbacks to a much earlier era. Blue was a song that went back to 1966, which is even just before Outlaw Country took hold. Unchained Melody was a hit all up and down in the 1960s, most famously sung by the Righteous Brothers. She seemed to think she could eventually use her powerful voice to cross over, but the twang is something she just could not get out of the way. She never worked in pop because the male fanbase who had a massive crush on her never wanted a pop LeAnn, and she never had the following of girls because her early stuff appealed to the more traditional country crowd, not the starry-eyed thirteen year old girls that Taylor Swift immediately established as her base of fans. LeAnn really has no interest in Nashville anymore and her politics are far closer to the Dixie Chicks than Carrie Underwood.

@@briangronberg6507 well, i'm sure it ended her peak and that's what the series is also about. similar to madonna with american life, katy perry with witness and metallica with st. anger, they kept on trucking but weren't as big and charmful as they were on their peak before those disasters.

This is the rare Trainwreckord that was so disastrous that it caused the artist in question to basically stop recording almost entirely (not counting bands because bands break up and never record again all the time). Because while most albums covered on this show effectively killed the respective artists' careers, many of them still release albums to this day - albeit to little fanfare obviously. But whatever happened to Faith during the Cry era completely crippled her creative drive. Other artists this has happened to are: Paula Abdul, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Lauryn Hill (as already covered on this show), Natasha Bedingfield (she had a colossal flop album in 2010), Christina Millian, and Fergie. I guess you can count Britney Spears as well after the disaster that was "Britney Jean". She did one more album called Glory in 2016 that was pretty well-received but flopped as well. Then she got fed up with the conservatorship, went rogue, and now she's effectively retired stating that she will never return to the music industry. And honestly, good for her.

Fergie was most likely the case of pop princess overload, and the fact she had an association with the Black Eyed Peas, who were really hated at that particular point in time when Fergie was big. Fergie just felt completely unnecessary to me: every single song she did could have been done by everyone, and having an entire album of her songs just felt... why bother? The radio will play anything interesting. Ashlee Simpson, of course, was due to the infamous SNL incident. (Seriously, Todd should do a series called "SNL Killed My Career" and cover Sinead O'Connor.) Jessica Simpson seems to have a similar fate to Fergie, in that she was just another pop princess and once people got tired of them, they moved on. Also Jessica had the tabloid marriage to the 98 Degrees guy and that probably turned people off.

The mixed reaction to Cry didn’t stifle Faith’s career at all. Three years later she released the hugely successful “Fireflies” album that returned her to the top of the country charts and warranted another stadium tour. Three years after that, she released her Christmas album and broke the AC chart record with its first single. Warner Brothers Records destroyed Faith’s creative ambition when they shelved her seventh album.

@@picahudsoniaunflocked5426 best we can tell is was a country-indie rock fusion thing. She was inspired by the music of Amos Lee and had recorded a cover of one of his songs.

Britney Spears, while i sympathize with her situation wih the conservatorship and i'm glad she's finally out of it, has always been an absolute disaster on an "artist" to me, i fail to see how Britney Jean is any worse than most of the overproduced garbage she made her entire career. Most overrated pop star of all time by a HUGE margin.

John Denver, the total pop crossover from folk, not country, won the CMAs male vocalist of the year in 1975. That was the year presenter Charlie Rich lit the envelope on fire and walked off the stage.

As someone from latin america were "American country music" had and still has absolutely zero presence on mainstream radio this is probably the most intriguing and mysterious Trainwreckord for me. I've never heard of Faith Hill in my life and the only artist mentioned who had some airplay here was Shania Twain.

Same here in Europe, I've never heard of Faith Hill or most of these artists, so this is mostly completely new to me.
