Hello! Psych major! Nice video but I want to make a few corrections: 1) Allport, along with Odbert, were able to extract 18,000 personality-destrictive terms from the unabridged English dictionary, NOT 4,500. However, among the 18,000 trait names, Cattell only used 4,500 for his factor analysis. 2) Cattel actually derived 35 factors from the 4,500. These 35 factors were later used by other researchers to establish the Big Five. However, among 35 factors, only 16 was used in his personality scale, 16 PF. References: Digman, J. M. (1990). Personality structure: Emergence of the five-factor model. Annual Review of Psychology, 41, 417-440 John, O. P., & Srivastava, S. (1999). Secondary traits are traits that only come to surface in certain situations. For example, an outgoing person might become shy when faced with having to speak in front of a crowd. These MCAT videos are great but always keep another tab open to look at other sources of information. Sometimes these videos don't cover everything, or sometimes these videos might say things that can be misinterpreted.

Theory of traits and personality appears dangerous. If you believe you are set in a certain way, it could sap your energy and confidence to learn and behave differently.

I'm confused. Hans Eysenck proposed biologically based factor theory. Although he is also one of the people to established the five factor trait theory, McCrae and Costa were known as they investigated it and polished the theory.

The five-factor model (FFM) was first suggested by Tupes and Christal in April 1961 in a technical report which was not widely published until June, 1992. It actually has roots in Cattell's work, however. At conferences in the 1990s, Eysenck humorously corrected people who called the FFM the "Costa and McCrae model" and instead reminded them that it was the "Tupes/Cristal 1961 model". He also called it the "Nonbiological model of personality" which seemed to get his point across. Eysenck remained committed to a three-factor model, four, if you include social naivete (the L scale). His wife, a psychologist better known in Britain, had a slightly different conceptualization of personality that also included three factors.

Hello! Pysch major here! Actually, Eysenck's theory only has 3 superfactors: Psychoticism, Extraversion & Neuroticism. This is a different model from the Five-Factor Model (aka. Big Five). On the other hand, even though McCrae and Costa were not the first to propose Big Five, they're work was very influential because they demostrated the Big Five in multiple cultures and in other personality scales.

I've been told that Eysenck and Gray's accounts are better at explaining human personality vs. the big 5 or Hexaco model which is better at describing human personality. I'm not quite sure why this is the case and from your video you mentioned that traits are descriptions vs explainers and they all have this. Can you shed any light on this?

I noticed the humming noise as well. Probably just a faulty mic or a really cheap one (since it's missing the popfilter).

I don't have any problems with the audio quality. I've seen worse. But the content is close to terrible. I wish you would explain the details of each theorist's theory instead of just listing them off. What exactly is psychoticism? The degree to which we warp reality? Is that supposed to mean anything to people that aren't psych majors? What is neuroticism? What exactly is the difference between central and secondary traits?

This is a very poor low-quality video done by someone that pronounces "traits" as "treats". She is also eating the microphone and must be her first video.
