Tram 118 relaunch

After many years of restoration by the dedicated volunteers at the St Kilda Tramway Museum. We invite you to be a part of history as tram 118 is returned to service on May 23rd, 2010.
Built in Adelaide by A. Pengelley & Co and introduced for service from 1910, a total of 20 E type 'bogie open combination' cars were built for the Municipal Tramways Trust. They were called 'combination cars' since half of the tram was fitted with open 'toast rack' seating while the other half of the tram had the seats in an enclosed saloon.
In 1936, all 20 E type cars were rebuilt as a closed saloon with the 'toast rack' section removed and the original saloon extended the full length of the car and the internal seating rearranged. After being rebuilt, the 20 cars were reclassified E1. E1 111 is preserved at the St Kilda Tramway Museum.
The body of tram 118 was sold for use as a beach shack at Fisherman's Bay during the mid 1950s where it remained until 1982 when it was acquired by the tramway museum for eventual restoration. After many years of work, 118 has been rebuilt into its original 'open combination' design.
