Police were called to Princes Street tram stop this afternoon where there were reports of someone wearing their underwear on their head and shouting obscenities. A person was taken into custody and is now being questioned. It is understood that she has asked that 162 similar offences be taken into consideration. Investigations continue. 😉. Enjoyed the vlog as always, love you forever G!

The Foot of the Walk stop is so-called because it's at the foot of Leith Walk. Leith was originally a separate town to the north of Edinburgh, but urban sprawl meant that they effectively merged and Leith officially became part of Edinburgh in 1920.

@@GLovesTrains I used to regularly use Gateway to change from the Fife Circle to the trams and vice versa. It’s where crew changes commonly take place. I used to use Haymarket regularly too because it’s about as far away from the stop I used for for work, Saughton, as Gateway. Fun(ish) facts - Ballgreen Tram Stop is almost on the site of the old Ballgreen Railway Station. Foot of the Walk is also very close to the site of the old Leith Central Railway Station. It featured in the novel Trainspotting. The only downside I’ve found with the trams themselves is that to save money TfE didn’t fit them with air conditioning, even though they are designed for them. Means they can get very hot in summer and steam up in winter.
@ccalthrop6347 Жыл бұрын
Excellent. These trams are so handy for getting into town from Leith. I’m on the grey ship in the port of Leith visible through the bridge at 19:18 and again at 19:33. The tram stop right outside the dock gate is so convenient. The fares are also very reasonable and Edinburgh is a fantastic city.

Back in 2014 I did two trips on the FPV Hirta, which I joined in Leith, and I had to use the bus to get to Leith from Waverley station because the tram hadn't reached Leith yet. I said at the time it would be so much better if the tram was extended to Leith. Now the tramway has reached Leith, but I no longer work at sea. 🙃

Great vlog, G, and well done covering the whole line in one go, even if the trams do use up the charge in your camera battery faster than they should! The lack of proper connection to Edinburgh Waverley from the trams is always a pain, but I don't think they could get a tram stop much closer than they did. You can also get to South Gyle station from a few tram stops (Gyle Centre is probably the nearest) but it's a bit of a trail through a housing estate to get there!

Great video G! I grew up and lived for many years in the West of the city. The Gogarburn stop is for the RBS HQ (or Natwest now??) there used to be a Mental Hospital on the site before it was built the RBS campus opened around 2005 and featured its own Tescos and other various shops. The Gyle Centre was built in 1993, the whole area is built on marshland. Edinburgh Park came afterwards in the late 1990's and has slowly expanded. Hermiston Gait was built mid 90's, not massively used at first. The TK-Maxx was actually a Currys originally. After the Sighthill Industrial Estate stop directly opposite the Booker Cash & Carry the tramline is built on what was a guided busway. I have driven a good number of buses that were used on the busway originally when it was in use. Many Edinburgh residents are angry about the tramline due to it being over budget and severely delayed. As you can see it mirrors a railway line from Hermiston Gait to Waverley Station and there was a very frequent bus service which mirrored some of the route from Gyle to Ocean Terminal but that was been gradually cut back over the years. Both the Gyle and Ocean Terminal have been hit hard by the retail decline. You'll notice the Edinburgh Trams logos on the seats, that was the original logo based on the old Lothian Buses logo which was redesigned in 2011 and the trams did not run until 2014! Also they were built with air conditioning for the whole tram, but it was removed before delivery to cut costs.

Great video G as always! Had the opportunity to travel on these trams soon after Newhaven extension opened. Want to say that travelling to Edinburgh by train it is much easier to connect at Haymarket rather than Waverley, especially for those mobility-challenged like me. As you say it is a bit of a walk from Waverley to St Andrews Square, with steps, lifts and escalators to negotiate - not all of which are working sometimes!

8:36 Given your surprise at seeing the tram platforms so low, one thing I forgot to mention in my comment was that the Manchester Metrolink is the only tram system in the UK which uses high floor platforms as when it was first built as all the other UK tram systems have low floor platforms (which is more convenient for street-level access). Given that it was the first modern tram system in the UK, low floor platform technology was in its infancy stage at the time in the UK (until the Supertram was built) and the Metrolink took over lines which were formerly main line railways, so main line rail height/high floor platforms were adopted for the Metrolink. However, I think if they planned the Metrolink a few years later, perhaps the platforms would have been low floor like the other UK systems.

So - from 'Picardy Place' to 'Foot of the Walk' you have been travelling downhill along 'Leith Walk' - the street that links Edinburgh to it's historically separate port town at Leith. Today Leith has been swallowed by Edinburgh. Between McDonald Road & Balfour Street you will have passed a bar called the 'Bier Hoose' - it's historic name is the 'Boundry Bar' as it marks the historic boundary between Edinburgh and Leith. Foot of the Walk is so named because it is at the foot (i.e. the bottom) of Leith walk.
@paulharvey9149 Жыл бұрын
You would indeed have passed over Gogar Burn - however, the one-word Gogarburn is thye name of the large estate at the other side of the main road - accessed across the bridge, nowadays occupied by Royal Bank of Scotland, but previously a hospital of the colony type. The "Foot of the Walk" Wetherspoons was originally a cinema by the way, that was also known as the - yes, you've guessed it - Foot of the Walk... The walk in question is Leith Walk, which is the broad the tramway runs down from just after Picardy Place stop. Foot of the Walk tram stop - which is just inside Constitution Street - is also the only one whose platforms are actually part of the pavements of that roadway, which is nevertheless available to trams only at that point.

The original line was hugely controversial when being built and once it opened. Cost over runs, allegations of financial mismanagement etc. However the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say and they have been hugely successful hence the extension to Newhaven. Further lines and extensions are now also in the planning stages too so over the coming decade or so the network will surely expand.

Just up from the foot of the walk, you'll find two sets of buildings. Their red in colour and look quite apart from the usual grey or sand stone. The reason I mention this is, because there was a short lived bridge that used to go between them which serviced a brewer and a goods yard on the opposite side. If you go to NLS maps you can find historic open survey maps and arial photos of that area. Thought I'd mention it if your interested.
